B737 App & Lndg video#10 Landing

In this video, I continue talking about approach and landing in the B737 for new pilots, and landing is covered here.
Warning Please be advised that all the content in this video and this channel are intended for training purposes only.
In this video four main points are covered:
1- Threshold crossing height (50ft)
2- Flare, all you need is 1 to 3 degrees pitch change to reduce the airplane sink rate to land.
3- Thrust reduction, which is done after you start the flare and it should be a continuous smooth to close the idle by touchdown. slightly before is ok but not after.
4- The importance of lowering the nose wheel smoothly on to the RW.
I might talk more about this phase of the flight due to it's complicity.
As always let me know if you have any questions or comments.
All the best
Abdulmuati

Hi Captain, another great video from you again. And once again, I'm going to say I wish you had made this video during my Line training and my early days of release to the line. At a stage I found myself over-flaring at 20ft which had the result of keeping the aircraft floating or going back into the air, I later realized I had to much energy and I should have introduced the power reduction just as I commenced the flare. Also, the challenge of keeping the centre line at short final was a challenge at some point but I found out I was over correcting, thanks to the amazing Captains at my company who patiently showed me their personal tricks to correct the situation. But again I'm yes if I had seen your video earlier it would have made a big difference. Keep up the good work sir and keep safe!

What I (as a virtual pilot only) have discovered, it is easier to cut throttles at 30ft and flare at 20ft. Since I do that, my landings are almost always on point without floaties and without a nose high attitude. I don´t know if it has to do with X-Planes ground effect physics but it works better than cutting the trottles after initiating the flare.

Hello Jump N Run (Cool nick name), I agree with you, also in FSX I tend to cut the power above 20ft, and just concentrate on flaring and touch down. I believe the reason FCTM recommends a constant reduction in thrust is to avoid abrupt changes in power which lead to the need for abrupt changes in pitch. The smoother the change in thrust, the better control over the airplane you have. Thanks for sharing. All the best Abdul

Thank you Abderrahman for your kind words. Wish you all the best in your career. Just to be clear, that video was intended for when you are flying and how to manage the other pilot, at least in my opinion. In an interview you might want to be assertive but humble. and just to have a strong understanding of the systems and procedures. Make sure to research who ever is interviewing you, the company people in key position and so on. Again wish you all the best. Abdul

Yes i do agree with you that the video was inteded to describe the personality of a good FO or CPT and put our ego aside. If not i was hoping to have some advices and exemples to how to approach an airline interview and see a video you talking about it and going a bit into some details and exemples. Hello arun aravind, That is a great question. Believe it or not I am still struggling as well in this area 😐 Here are some of the tools that might be helpful: - when on the proper glide path make a mental note of the position of the threshold from the bottom of the windshield. That could be two inches or one inch whatever it is, make a mental note and this is going to be a great reference to use. How to get to this point use any of the following: - Utilize the vertical deviation indicator in the ND. Provided you have the RW set in the FMC and the FMC has sequenced to the RW. - DME to the RW is a great tool as well, so at 3nm from the RW you want to be at 900ft AGL, at 2nm 600ft at 1nm 300ft. If you rather have it in MSL just add the RW elevation to the altitudes above. - The vertical bearing is another great Tool 2.8-3.0 degrees or so to the RW you are very close to the proper path the FMC will give you V/S as well that you can aim for. Hope this help, let me know if you have any other question or more explanation. Thanks for your kind words Abdul

@@AbdulmuatiAsiri37 Thank you capt,I will try it next time.I am back on my cockpit. I recently attended an interview of an airline and 1 question they asked one of my colleagues, we couldn't find the answer. "If u get Windshear caution (red cone with black stripes )on ND before 80 knots. What will be your action".I checked it everywhere, .Even on Qrh,for approch ,It is given as pilots discretion, but nothing about takeoff .Can you help me to know ,weather it is a Reject or Go situation. We all First said ,It as Reject,But,they want to know, where is it written .As for low speed Reject, in conditions given by qrh,It is predictive windshear warning and not caution.

@@arunaravind4279 it's a reject. Think about it.. You're in the low speed regime and there's a windshear warning... Why would anyone continue. Better question would be close to v1?... Answer is still no. Where is it? In limitations.

    @AbdulmuatiAsiri37

Hello arun, Thanks again for another great question, PLEASE keep these questions coming. The following are my opinion as a discussion topic and not advice on what to do in real life flying. If you reference the QRH, Maneuvers-Non-Normal Maneuvers section/Windshear/Windshear Caution, which is the first section in Windshear it talks about dealing with the caution in predictive windshear is just to “maneuver as required to avoid the windshear”. However predictive wind shear warning is specifically mentioned and talking about when to reject and when to do the escape maneuver in a takeoff roll. So Predictive windshear caution in takeoff, maneuver as required, Predictive windshear warning: below V1 reject, Above V1perform windshear escape maneuver. So the answer that I will be giving is "I will continue the T.O. as long as it is a caution, and not a warning provided no other indication imply a real windshear situation exist" Hope that help, Thanks again Abdul

@@AbdulmuatiAsiri37 Thank you capt. Our problem was,in qRH,the caution statement to manoeuvre is given only for approch and nothing was said about Takeoff. But,when we discuss too,we comes to same conclusion. But,some were saying, a low speed Reject is much better than taking off into a doubtful windshear condition. But,Like you do said If we take caution for approach as a general criteria, I think we can continue might be the answer.

Hello Captain, An interesting lesson to learn. By analyzing and understanding these intermediate steps, it should no longer be difficult to merge them as imperceptibly as possible. An approach that many can take advantage of. I am also happy to experience that the COVID-19 has not reached you and I hope it will stay that way. Please stay wary of this. Finally, another question: Is it permissible for the Captain to take the right seat and the FO in the left if he prefers to do so during a regular flight? Bye bye Captain ...

Hello G L, glad you liked the video, and thanks for checking on me. Hope everyone stay safe. Regarding your question, if I understood it correctly. Can the Captain switch seat with the FO? For a switch like this to happen, both of the two pilots have to be typed as captains and both are authorized to fly from left and right seats by their company. Otherwise that switch can not happen. Hope that answer your question. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Stay safe and take care G L All the best Abdul

Hi captain asiri! I am middle of Lifus and I only struggle about 10 ft. Once I tried first flare 20 ft I am not able to make others correctly so I started first flare 30 ft and reduce thrust 20 ft, second flare 10 ft, but I float aircraft each time, or my second flare is not enough. I feel so hopeless, I don’t have any problem about descent management or approach.

Hi, A lot happens in this phase of the flight, what I like about you, is you are very methodical in adjusting and assessing what you are doing, So here are some suggestions that might help, just read do not try to apply, your subconscious will take this information and work with it, after all this phase is just your mind, eyes and muscles are trying to create reference points, it is crazy how this flare and landing becomes almost a reflux. So: - if you feel the airplane starts to float, reduce the pressure on the yoke (do not push the nose down) just reduce the pressure on the flight controls. - Forget about smooth landing, you are looking for a firm landing on speed on center line and in touchdown zone. Firm landing is a safe landing. - visualize the flare, and visualize your are doing all the movements correctly do it before the flight for five minutes after you wear your uniform, you have no idea how powerful visualization is. Agay talking before leaving your house going to the airport. - Use this struggle and frustration, to challenge yourself, that will give a different perspective, I was bad when I first started flying, my landings were bad, identifying emergencies in the sim was terrible, I reached a point that I felt I did a mistake becoming a pilot, but you know what, I decided to use that as a fuel for myself to become better I looked at it as a challenge this whole channel was created cuz I struggled when I first started flying the airplane. So look at it as a challenge, and be patient with yourself. Am more than happy if you like to connect and discuss this further, If you like send me an e-mail abdulmuati37@gmail.com All the best, Abdul
