B&O Beogram 1900 - the most beautiful turntable in the world

I recently got back into vinyl and bought myself this Bang & Olufsen Beogram 1900. It was the only turntable that my wife would allow in the living room.
If anyone can comment on the condition of my MMC4000 stylus, go ahead. I don't know much about styli, so is this one still in good shape?

The real problem with these and i see them for sale all the time is the cartridges are very expensive. There is a company who is making them still called sound smith but they too are also very expensive..(so is this hobby) I had a beautiful Rx2 Beogram i loved but with a broken tonearm and lost stylus and cartridge. So i designed and made my own 3d carbon fiber printed replacement head-shell to take a Tp4 like the Audio Technica uses (just happen to have some) and this looks and works great. I had to rewire the tonearm because the micro wires had become shorted internally. Used the same stainless steal shaft for it,, i hope to do a video on the mod to show how it was done. Its really an elegant solution for me and now i can use many different carts and stylus to try and find something that really matches my system. I might even build my own tonearm's and turntables..

got a set of equipment. Vinyl, reel, cassette, amplification, speakers. All Bang and Olufsen. The condition is not clear, has not been used for a long time. I’m thinking about whether it’s worth getting confused by repairs or taking it to the trash. turntable gr1900. When turned on, the relay clicks, but does not turn. The needle is crooked.

Yes, but keep in mind that it is a super low mass tone arm and your tracking force is probably 2 grams or less. All the B&O Beograms I've owned (4) have had a unique feature... they disconnect the sound during needle drop, so your amp and speakers don't suffer a "thud". Great tt's!

Just got mine back from a long-term storage as well. And agree, it is beautiful. And it works :-) However, the lid is not connected. You mention that you had this problem but fixed it. Do you have any information on this which might be helpful?. It looks like part of the lid it self is broken, as well as one of the brackets.

I have a B&O TX2 turntable, absolutely amazing turntable, and sounds very good. But even though it sounds very good i still on most of my old vinyls, get a knittering/noisy sounds. Is it because my vinyls arent cleaned properly? I have grounded the turntable to my preamp which is an old NAD 1240 which I think is pretty good and great sounding preamp.

While with every other manufacturer's pickup the stylus has to shift the mass of the entire cartridge when moving around in the recording groove, only with the B&O unit is the mass of the stylus alone being moved. It's a truly brilliant piece of electronic engineering design!

You must have either a bad setup or the wrong gear. See what I wrote to Alexandros above. The B&O 4000 is in the engineer's Hall of Fame for a reason; it's perhaps the only 100% perfect table ever designed. I have many tables including an Ortofon OM40 Super with it's VDH sylus on a Garrard Transcription table and Micro Seiki arm and the B&O shreds it for accuracy. Not the depth the Ortofon has perhaps (I wouldn't even bank on THAT, that's "all ear" in the parlance) but certainly the scope shows it as far more accurate.

  • @koendelvaux

True. I thought about converting the tone arm to accept an Ortofon cartridge, but it seems the probability of success might be too low, given my skillset.

"New, original"? B&O cartridges haven't been built for 30 years. Their suspensions get stiff over time whether they are used or not. Simply get a new cartridge from SoundSmith.

Bang & Olufsen is always a piece of art and ahead of its time from design point of view. But not so from sound point of view, and special for the money you have to pay. I have try in the past B&O turntables and amplifiers and while the sound is clean, relaxed and soft, they are not dynamic and realistic for symphonic music or hard rock. They don't have the power and energetic to handle it.

I don't think you have listened to the best ones then. The Beomaster 8000 from 1984 is extremely powerful and will tick many audiophile boxes and the Beolab 5000 system of 1967 was of a professional standard. The 1900 was a good deck and had the massive advantage that it wasb easy to set up. Other decks of this era were either extremely basic or needed and engineering degree to set up properly and were very sensitive to placement. The Beogram was advertised as 'danjce proof' as they had a well engineered suspended sub chassis. They also pass the wife test as they are beautiful and the cild test as they are easy to use and fully automatic. Cartridges are still available and available from Soundsmith in the US but is is also possible to get your existing cartridge refurbished.

@@-triumphgt667 He can't possibly have it set up properly or have the right gear. If he really believes it is not dynamic or realistic he either has a crummy preamp (most likely) or a low-end stylus. Peter Ledermann at SoundSmith built an SMMC-1 for me; I use it on a TX-2 table. If your preamp doesn't know what to do with an output mV/cm/s RMS 0,6 then it's not the cart's fault (love looking at the nude OLC diamond on the ruby cantiever). That table is my go-to for Axis: Bold As Love by Hendrix, bypassing my Thorens TD-160 and Grace tonearm/cart. I like the B&O BECAUSE it's dead accurate and always 100% realistic; a perfect tangential table also set up perfectly will ALWAYS be more accurate than an S-shaped tonearm of equal quality EVERY DAY. There can be no alignment/azimuth/skew issues. The stylus is perfect in every groove; it's basic physics. An s-shaped tonearm is only 100% accurate in the (usually) middle. My other guess is his opinion is solely based on what others have told him. The B&O's are in the Engineering Hall Of Fame for a reason.
