My first Bartok recording and I was hooked. Then came Symphonie for Orchester and all the strigquartettes. Later Herzog blaubarts Burg. Then I wrote my dispotat over the stringquartettes. 60 years later I am still obsesed with this music.
Thank you for charing this beloved recording.

My great pleasure. I might upload a remastered version with better sound and no skips. What do you think?
The second movement is hauntingly beautiful
I've never heard this. Recorded the year I was born. Amazing composition. And sounds great. Gotta love that vinyl sound. Long live 33 1/3 rpm...

Indeed! Thanks for your note. david
This is probably the best recording of the song I've found yet. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for posting this. It is one of my very favorite pieces of 20th century orchestra music, and I keep being amazed that it is played so little. I've been going through the KZread versions, and finally came to this one. I think it must be the one I first heard when I discovered this music as a student (about 1962), and then bought on LP. Anyway, it sounds far better to me than the others I've been listening to. I seem to be able to hear so much more on this recording. This year I was finally able to hear this played live. It was in Alice Tully Hall, by the Lincoln Center Chamber Orchestra, 18 world-class musicians playing without a conductor - leadership seemed to pass from one musician to another at various times. A remarkable experience. I think I was probably the only one who came to that performance because this piece was on the program. But the rest of the performance was good too. An endless standing ovation - led by me (I mean, I think I was the first on my feet - up in the balcony, however). Alice Tully Hall is heaven in New York City.

Me too! Same as yourself.Just now been wading through some fairly stiff, rushed and undynamic interpretations until discovering this one. First was introduced during music studies at an adult education college and have it on cassette somewhere. Equally as impressive as this one here. Though I wonder if it were just the initiation of such a cool blend of folk, modern classical and Bartok's own je ne sais quoi that hit me at the time.. Certainly during the studies ,we also had a Tchaikovsky piece and had to listen to the teacher bemoan the composer's necessity for plodding repetition of the main theme ,hammering it out in the recapitulation...That may have swayed us as wide -eyed students to look at the Bartok piece more favourably....having said that.....I have said too much! Have a great week,Michael :)

I heard performed live by my my old Orchester wher I later played as a solflutist.
fricsay, one of the greatest!
Very nice. Thanks for posting.
Great. One of my favorites conductor of the XXth Century. ¡Bravo!
outstanding!! I've loved this recording for twenty years, my parents had the album and I later borrowed it- forever- as far as this listener is concerned Fricsay nails it like no other- many thanks for posting this mind-bendingly beautiful work- p60
Ferenc Fricsax was and still is regarded as the greatest interpret of Bartok and Mozarts music. I can only recommend everyone to read his Booklet " Über Mozart und Barock ". Himself was a student of Bartok so more autentic you won''t get it.
Einfach atemberaubend!
Parcoster, you obviously have very good pair of ears. This is marvelous music. Bartok forever.
Nagyszerű felvétel, érdemes meghallgatni!
E proprio una fantastica interpretazione. 1956!! Madonna.
people consider me crazy for liking this music but i like it. very much.
beloved fricsay!
fricsay war wohl einer der besten dirigenten überhaupt und bei bartok, für mich, überwältigend!

...nem baj ha magasan van, az csak használt a műnek! Szerintem.....
I can die after the 2nd Movement.
Azért nem kell,hogy annyira fájjon,minimálisan magasabb.Berlini hangolás.
Nooooo! Why removed????
magyarok nem hallgatták ezt a felvételt? Vagy csak no comment?
