Early in 1969 I travelled to San Carlos Mexico just outside of Guaymas on the Gulf of California to visit a friend who had been hired to fly B25s for the movie “Catch 22”. They had 16 planes that they had scoured the world to find and had the restored in California to flying condition. There is some amazing footage in the movie. My friend gave me a tour of his plane and I was stunned to realize how men were willing to fly these aircraft into combat. I have some home movies and 35mm still shots of the planes in the air. There is a great scene in the film of all the planes taking off in rapid order. No CGI in this film, everything real. When the planes arrived on set which included a 2500 ft runway (still visible in satellite view) they looked brand spanking new out of the factory. The director had them messed up with dirt and oil stains to make them look like the had been in constant combat. When you see where the bombardier had to sit you know why Yossarian was constantly trying to get grounded. At the time the group of panes was considered the 10th largest bomber air forces in the world.

Actually flown in -25s twice. As sailor, returning to duty after a leave, once (about 1962) hitched a ride from Maxwell, to Andrews on a Mitchell. Couldn't hear, literally, for two or three days afterwards. I sat in a jump seat, for much of the flight to the rear of the two pilots, and roughly centered in the aircraft. This HAPPENs to place you dead center of the two wings. The wing structure forms a "tunnel" open to the actual physical rear of the two engines ... which forms a sound focusing channel .... and the noise level there is simply off the charts ... literally deafening. Great ride, but actually painful at times. Very, very loud conditions.Incidentally, for you drivers out there, Vmc for this machine is 145 mph!!!!! Really high ... for today's equipment.

B-25 Mitchell - favourite aircraft since I was so high. Bit of a story: Back in WWII, my father served in RAF Coastal Command as a Radio Operator/Navigator/Gunner. Flew on quite a few types - Wellington, Hudson, Catalina, Stirling.... him and his crew were sent out to the Consolidated plant at Willow Run to collect their B24 Liberator and fly it back to the UK. The delivery was delayed, and somehow they found themselves in San Francisco, on 4th July, which coincidentally was my Dad's birthday! Some local USAAF airmen got wind of this and organised him a proper birthday present - a flight in the co-pilots seat of a B-25, under the Golden Gate Bridge, twice, out and back!

Cool Story! Did they have to pay a toll on the Golden Gate Bridge? I think it was 10 cents back then. Kidding aside, I can see the Golden Gate Bridge from my house in Oakland. The B-25 is my favorite medium bomber, ever since I saw "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" maybe in '66 just before teenhood! I've long loved the looks of a B-25, and count myself lucky to see one on the ground and hear it takeoff at the EAA convention at Oshkosh, WI. If you love airplanes you owe it to yourself to visit at least once. Many consider it to be the equivalent of Mecca. And P-51s! Imagine a dozen or more parked to be admired then flying. And typically several thousand -- yes, thousand -- other aircraft.

I flew twice in Tondelayo when the Collings Foundation was at SNA, and my memories of it then was of less backfiring than in this video. I assume that 100LL is being used both times, so what else could be causing all that popping? Was the ignition retarded the same amount? After Nine-O-Nine crashed I would be less willing to fly again in Tondelayo: the NTSB report is critical of Collings' maintenance culture and procedures.

I believe this bomber was nicknamed the widow maker by some pilots because it had a sharp stall speed and was forgiving for the inexperienced. The chugging sounds was impressive from those Pratt Whitney engines. The English Merlin engines were special and turned the P51s into beast. For some reason I thought the Merlin name was in reference the magician of King Auther but it's named after a bird of prey.

My mom's uncle was also killed in 1944. I've seen picture's of him. He was well liked. He told the story of his voyage to Europe. The ship was crowded with little privacy. Two men in his section of the ship had one bad habit no one in those conditions could tolerate, neither felt it necessary to bath. In that time bathing often wasn't as frequent and many homes lacked hot water. Antiperspirant was noval. This two fellows took alot of ribbing but flatly refused baptism. It was decided to assist them with their personal hygiene and to make it memorable and something they must do often on their own steel wool was used to scrub them down. They became frequent bathers and their phobia was cured. War brings people together like few things in life. My mom's uncle's name was Leo Taylor. He greatest love was horses and had joined the army cavalry for duty in the American west that still used horses for patrol.

This looks like Palomar field, San Diego. I am related to Lt. William ( Bill) Farrow, Doolittle Raider, #16, ( Bat out of Hell). Did my first solo from Northrop ( Hawthorne) field in August 1972.

Might I inquire as to why she does not have a top ball turret gunner? She reportedly shot down 6 Zeros. 4 were credited to the top ball turret gunner, 2 to the nose gunner and one SHIP! On the variants I looked up all appear to have a top gunner position. Please explain. Thank you.

B-25 Mitchell's light bomber squadron, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Harold Doolittle, left the aircraft carrier USS CV-8 and bombed mainland Japan in revenge for the Pearl Harbor raid. That is the Doolittle Raid.

I had two rides on this Collings Mitchell bomber with Hedy Lamar as the nose art. Unfortunately, Nine-O-Nine was gone. We had these bombers to do flight tests of an "Online real-time black box" successfully. How stupid and shame that the black box is still tied to the airliners !
