Nigel Mansell, my favourite F1 driver ever. Standing next to my 2nd favourite F1 driver ever. Forget the drama they had at Spa, they respected each other so much. They were 2 of the best drivers of their era, in fact of all time. Along with Prost and Piquet in their era.

Are you kidding? Mansell was nowhere NEAR Prost's level. Prost totally destroyed Mansell when they were teammates at Ferrari. So much that he threatened to quit F1. Mansell got destroyed five years in a row at Lotus by Elio de Angelis. Got easily beaten by K.Rosberg at Williams 1987. Then Mansell self-destructed 1986 and 1987 in the best car and threw away the championships. Piquet was also way better overall driver. Mansell was a fast hothead who notoriously broke his cars and the only teammates he ever beat were Berger (slightly) and Patrese. He lost to Andretti, Hakkinen, Hill, De Angelis (FIVE friggin' years in a row=, Rosberg, Prost and Piquet.

@@detonator2112 Mansell certainly didn't self destruct in 1986, he was told by the tyre manufacturers that his tyres would last the rest of the race. Then the inevitable happened and his tyre blew. Rosberg wasn't at Williams in 1987. He got injured before the Japanese Grand Prix in 1987, thus destroying his chance of winning the World Championship. It seems like you've let your dislike of Mansell affect your opinion.

Prost beat Mansell at Ferrari. He also beat four other world champions who were his teammates. Senna, K.Rosberg, Damon Hill and Niki Lauda. Mansell was beaten by K.Rosberg in 1985 and later Prost. Mansell was nowhere NEAR Prost's level. Nigel was spectacular and fast driver in a superiorly fast car (that Williams was in the early 90's).

@@nomecognome8737 Of course he beat him. He was the world champion that year. Sure Senna was faster that year but Prost won the title. Saying that Prost didn't beat him is like claiming that a football team won the game because they made more beautiful dribbles but lost the game 0-1. Prost actually outscored Senna both 88 and 89. Only the silly points system in 1988 handed Senna the title.

@@detonator2112 it's not just Senna being faster tho. Prost deliberately crashed onto him to stop him, AND EVEN THEN, Senna managed to restart the race and win it, after the accident and after having stopped for several seconds, losing time on everyone and having to stop again for a pitstop to change the front wing. And AFTER THE RACE WAS OVER, they decided to disqualify him and give the title to Prost. That's a fucking armed robbery right there, it's 1000 times worse than Abu Dhabi 2021. AND, Senna had a lot of troubles with the car that year retiring few times or having to stop sooner, still managing to get close to Prost in the end and beat him fairly. So yes, objectively, Prost is the 89 champ. But to say he beat him one must have not watched that season. It's like the Rocky 2 when Apollo says "I won but I didn't beat him."

@@nomecognome8737 I have watched that season many times. I'm old enough to remember it intimately. I've been through the whole 80's and 90's many times so stop that patronizing bs. Senna deliberately crashed into Prost in Suzuka 1990. It was pretty even dirty fight. And that 89 overtaking attempt was just cocky and stupid. I see it as a normal racing incident. And it's not just about luck to make cars last. Prost had the skill to save the car, drive conservatively and avoid mistakes. It's not a coincedence that Mansell's, Rosberg's or Senna's cars always had way more issues. Mansell notoriously broke his cars. It was said at the 1990 Japanese GP, where it was seemingly a formality for Mansell to win after Senna had taken Prost out, Mansell was so desperate to get out of the pits before Piquet came by, that he let out the clutch with so many revs, before the car had been lowered off the jacks, that it broke both driveshafts and he didn’t make the end of the pit lane! The insider at Ferrari claimed they had never seen both driveshafts break at the same time. The same insider also said that the cars were in good condition after Prost but Mansell's cars were always totally destroyed. Luck has very little do to with it. Sometimes yes if something like battery gets broken. But usually in the long season luck evens out. Senna fanboys are the least objective people ever. Senna was the fastest and most talented but Prost was the best complete F1 driver. His track record against best teammates in the world proves it.

@@GarethT902 I think Senna was never worry about Mansell because he didn't consider Nigel a real opponent for the driver championship. Mansell was a very very fast driver and capable of things on the edge of the impossible on the track. But Nigel was also too much impetuous and impulsive. Because of his temperament Nigel leterally threw away a lot of opportunities to win the championship. In order to win you need also of the cleverness to understand when you have to push to the limit and when you have to save the car and bring home the best result possible. Mansell was a great opponent on the track but not for the championship.

In the second part of this season the Williams became the unbeatable car until the end of 1993. Senna dominated the first part, Mansell and Patrese the second part while Senna was trying to defend his lead. Great season.
