Aylsham Navigation canoe trail art one. Aylsham Mill to Burgh Mill

Part one of three videos where Andy Tidy explores the Aylsham Navigation, or the upper River Bure in Norfolk. The trip was undertaken by canoe in the autumn of 2019 and includes a history of the waterway as a navigation before it was washed out in August 1912. If you want to follow this route I can recommend The Canoeman.com

Keep them coming Andy always look forward to your videos, can't understand why you haven't got a bigger following, many people are interested in the canal network and you give the background to the system.

My posting volumes are low Dene and are probably a bit "history heavy" for many. To be honest, I do them because I enjoy recording the subjects rather than big viewing numbers. Glad you enjoy them.

More fascinating footage about an area I knew very little about, until this video. Thank you so much.

Hi Andy. What a small world eh? We went to school together where you were commonly known as 'Tiddles'. When I saw the name and you plus you said you were brought up in Coltishall I instantly knew who it was. The last time I saw you was on N.W. Memorial Park Fete round about 1983 and you were living in Lincolnshire. Great Video. I've not canoed the Upper Bure but I must do it someday. I have however canoed the NWDC (upper Ant). Stay Safe - now going to watch part 2 of your caper. P.S.........I'll post this video on FB and tag-in a load of your old school colleagues.

@@cygnusxl5 I am glad you said who you are! I really envied that home built chopper of yours! As you may gather from the videos, I ended up in the West Midlands and still love messing about on the water (am out with our pair of narrowboats at present). Good to hear from you.

Life at 2.3 miles an hour I know it was very deep, I was very curious where it went and I didn’t dare go any further than the mill, plus there was a lot of branches in the river after the storm on Sunday.

Getting in is the challenge because there is no access to the mill pool. Access is via the open land where Mill Gate and Dunkirk meet. Walk diagonally towards the mill over the grass and you will come to the flood relief channel which passes under Mill Gate. This stream is shallow for 50 yards so you can expect to have to get your feet wet and you then hop in as the stream meets the flow coming out of the millpool. This stream takes you past the back of The Staithe and on to Dunkirk - the original terminus for the Navigation. Watch out for the weir at Dunkirk - its too high to shoot safely and you will need to portage.

Life at 2.3 miles an hour thank you very much . I went and had a look earlier, I think I was in the right place! I did think it looked very shallow and would need to be carried up the stream to deeper water. Thanks for your reply .
