The soundtrack for this game is, hands-down, one of the best to grace the SNES. The Wurlitzer-heavy arrangements were catchy, evocative, and (in the case of level 3) unexpectedly jazzy! I love this game.

Wonderful review of my favorite shmup of all time! Axelay has that perfect blend of stunning pixel art, innovative and stylish presentation, engaging gameplay, precise controls, and a CD Quality soundtrack. Incredible feat for such an early game in the SNES life cycle! As you rightly said, it holds up so well today, and in my opinion, has aged like a fine wine, and similarly is an experience to be savored!

My most memorable moment with this game was when I realized the intros to the first and last level's music are in the intro of the game.

I recently played the game again. I remember seeing this for the first time when I was 11 years old and it's still impressive. The best part IMO is the music, especially in the last stage that remixes the boss music of the first stage and makes it really eerie with the alien sounds added in. Too bad Axelay 2 never saw the light.

Axelay and Starwing were the best Space shooters. Awesome music and graphics. Axealy was more serious and I loved the gameplay.

graphics were absolutely top notch at the time. I mean they still hold up today. but the coolest part was ZERO slowdown. Like literally zero. the most memorable part was the vertical sections with the scenery/objects using mode 7 to come into and out of the screen.

Back then I only had a NES and I remember seeing a screenshot of the lava Boss on a gaming magazine and those graphics seemed unreal to me, like it was almost impossible for a videogame to look that good. When I finally got my SNES I remember renting this game weekend after weekend and having a blast playing with a few friends, but I can't recall if I ever was able to finish it, so many of those NES/SNES games were so difficult and finishing them was really a challenge.

I admit i was never very good at this game. However, i would have sleepovers at my best friends as a kid, and watch him beat the game with ease. It's a beautiful game.

Where are Space Shooter since 1995? The last good game remember is Descent 2. Today I play R-Type 2 Final. Xenon 2 Megablast, Hybris, Battle Squadron, Menace & Blood Money are legend.

They shoulda kept it side scrolling as the other sections looked as if you were rolling over a barrel and were frankly horrible.

Silly TROLLBOT. Both the side-scrolling and overhead levels are excellent. Anyone that has actually played through the game knows that.
