Awesomeness in Bonaire. Adventures of an old Seadog, ep69
In this episode, I visit a beach bum's paradise, a pink sea with pink flamingos, a slave village, a salt mine. I fix a broken mooring and dive the famous reefs of Bonaire.

Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.

After seeing this 3 years ago, tonight is my first night in Bonaire. I was supposed to go last year but 2020 happened. Pretty great so far. Taking my 12yo son for his certification dives this weekend. Thanks Barry for turning me on to this place!
I enjoy the old sea dogs adventures since i am now a land lubber that No loner sails!
It's great to see the islands less travelled, and your view off them. Great Stuff 10 out of 10 😂
Your in a position to get your prawn smashed.😃✔️ Gotta rinse the old sheath out if you know what I mean!.
Always windy in Bonaire. Love the island
Great footage of a pipefish at 08:50 they are part of the sea horse family.
Thinking about the pink water; must be from all the tiny 🦐 shrimp (breeding ground) that the flamingo live on. Their diet of shrimp is actually what gives flamingos their beautiful color.
It always makes me smile when you meet a dog 🐕
oh Man Barry youre quite long under water without breathing....!
I believe the pink coloration is caused by a variety of algae which thrives in particularly caustic environments such as the salt pans featured in your video Barry. I also believe that Flamingo derive their vibrantly pink coloration during their mating season from consumption of similar pink algae in caustic environments they prefer.
lol. The cocaine mines of Bonaire. Damn :-)
I’m so impressed by your photography, editing, music insertion and subject matter. Your comments are so witty and on point. Please, keep ‘em coming.

LOL Berry, now that's funny for sure! But I think everybody seen it movie Blow, and that fella in The Stomping box, stomping coca leaves until he was out of his gourd.
Barry superb video
Lovely episode, many thanks.
Bonaire was without a doubt our favorite in the Caribbean until we got to the San Blas Islands. Love your adventures and sense of humor, English humor and stiff upper lip. 😇
The dogs probably thinking what the hell!
Great video. The picture of the boat hull suspended in the water was really neat shot
My new favorite sailing channel !!
Found the mountain of cocaine headed for New York comment quite hilarious!
Again, great video, I'm learning some great technique from you,..from one old sailor to another,, great job,....Skipper Andy
It's amazing how your boat actually floats in water. Great way to start the video. Good job!!

Beautiful Bonaire! Good job mate getting the nice footage, adding music and narrative all by yourself. We know how much work it is! Now we wanna see how much Gammeldansk "Old Dane" you could drink before falling overboard :)

I love these videos Barry. Thanks for sharing them with us :)
Just gorgeous underwater footage!
fantastic!
Nicely done!
another beautiful video Barry, stay safe and enjoy
I don't trust moorings. A good idea to add your own lines. I always used my own anchoring gear if possible. You need a feathering prop, your dragging a sea anchor with that fixed three blade. Love the shot of your crabs. Ha Ha. Keep up the good work.
beautiful
Great stuff Barry. You're not missing anything in England. The weather is cold and awful. My advice is Don't come back anytime soon. 😅 BTW. I didn't realise the shadmiester was a steel hull. I thought she was a fibreglass hull.
Nice video. Something for everyone. Keep it up Barry. 🍕
Atta boy Barry, keep up the good video work. Love following you & Shadow.
A weeks supply of beer! Your all set.
Really enjoyable video! I like all the witty commentary throughout the video :)

@pjd412 They are declining...🙄
Love Ran sailing ⛵️
Those mooring blocks won't hold much weight..looks like concrete which is half its weight in water, nevermind the lines. In a good blow you will drag those quicker then an anchor. I would be wary of those. I wonder if they are government moorings and if boat breaks off, who is responsible? Keep up the good work and have fun.
Barry, can you show a shopping trip, inside the grocery store at some of these remote places?
Great vid Barry......don't you miss not having a mate with you to share all that you have done? Its nice to have sea friends around you, I am sure.....but....:)
Nice fish was hoping for donkeys
Hey Barry I see you found those pink storks you saw flying over your boat you mentioned in the other episode ! Barry , did you know they were rare pink flamingos ? They get their pink color from the shrimp they eat ! Those legs have backward knees and look very thin and frail . When they are frightened they fly off in a flock and because of their legs being the way they are they get hurt . The injury usually causes their death . The thumbnail was great for episode 69 . The next episode is 70 , 7 is God's number you know , so I'm sure it will be a good one !
YOU MAKE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD
Love your vids
thankyou sir. awesomeness is right.
Excellent again! And thank you so much for showing all us your safety awareness. That is hopefully leading to others avoiding risky situations. Realise that, you already have became an authority in safety awareness. That is not unessential, not only for single-hand sailors. Keep up the good work!
Says the frenchman, "Enough awsomeness here to give me ze bonaire..."
You show three cases of beer and then thank your patrons for supporting you ? Haha. Wow.
Next time Rent Golfcar it's so much fun and cheaper.
Like most of us old shadow needs a good bottom job.
Yet another great video. I, along with thousands of other, would love to join you on your adventures but I guess, like me, you are a bit of a loner by the look of it..
Gammel dansk . wouw - though we dont drink that much Gammel Dansk - I prefer caribean rum.... :- great vids
👍
the foam is high "tide"

This is great! I wonder what he uses for this simple video editing. I need a software like this for my travels as well! Does anyone have any ideas?
Oh those slaves got out of the sun alright, they probably never even saw it by being in the mines all day.
Given the way slaves were treated on average I doubt those tiny huts were used for just two people, the poor souls were probably packed in like sardines.
Just wondering what happens to the zip-tie when its time weigh anchor?
Ocean, boat, pizza and beer what more do you need.
Bonaire is a world class diving destination. Not sure why you found the snorkeling "disappointing"
Patrons are helping you buy 6-7 cases of beer for the boat....
