Today, Christian dives into four pilot watches from various price points at London Jewelers!
First up, we have the Longines Avigation Big Eye. At $2,625, the Big Eye has become a modern Longines icon. It won the revival category of the Grand Prix in 2017, and has remained one of the most well-respected modern reissues on the market to this day. A 41mm steel case and stark, highly legible black dial lend themselves to the classic pilot watch design language we come to expect. The oversized pushers both expand the visual presence of the watch, while also being incredibly functional if a pilot were, in fact, to take this thing up in the air with the intention of using the chronograph. With a movement based on the Valjoux 7750, it's a classic and reliable chronograph, modified by Longines.
From there, we move up in price a bit to the $ range with the IWC Pilot Spitfire Chronograph. At just over $5k, this is out middle of the road option in terms of price, but it punches way above its weight when it comes to quality. Here we see the introduction of some impressive finishing, including some finely beveled edges that shimmer, alongside an upgraded movement from the one seen in the Longines (despite being based on the same architecture). IWC's pilot heritage is certainly more well known, and it shows here, where the use of faux patina at the quarter hours and on the hands reminds the wearer of this.
Next, we tackle the Breitling Aviator 8 B01 43 Curtiss Warhawk, a watch released in tribute to the famed Fighter Pilots from World War II. Breitling's heritage in the aerospace world is equally well known as IWC's, and though the brand certainly strayed from this in the early to mid 2000s, under new CEO Georges Kern, they seem to have found their way back. Powering the watch is Breitling's first in-house chronograph movement, the B01, which spent years in development. It's an impressive, highly rugged and well-designed chronograph movement that is featured not only in most of Breitling's modern chronographs, but also in the Tudor Black Bay Chrono as well. Coming in at just under $8k, it's on the higher end for a pilot watch, but between the in-house chronograph movement and the sheer level of finishing here, it's hard to beat.
Finally, a bit of fun, we have the Patek Philippe 5524R, their Calatrava Pilot Travel Time in rose gold. This 42mm watch is something way out there for the brand, but still pays homage to their little known history building Hour Angle pilot watches in the 1930s. Sure, the rose gold is a bit much, and the near $50k price tag is a big leap to make, but for what you're getting, and the uniqueness of the travel time complication, it definitely isn't as outlandish as it could have been.

Christian please check the specs on the IWC.. The Spitfire model you have in the video has a new in-house movement.. Not a reworked 7750.. Maybe you're confusing it with the regular IWC Pilot 43mm chronograph which has a modified 7750.. The IWC is the pinnacle in pilot watch design.. My favorite of the 3.. A true icon in the watch game.. Another great video Christian.. Keep up the great work👍

I own the IWC IW387901 twice, yeah I purchased it upon early release then sold it then regret it, so I contacted an IWC AD an purchased a new one recently. It's an awesome piece and it's not often I regret a watch once sold! Which it's saying how much I love this piece. Christian has a valid point on the hands, the way I see it is this, the watch is inspired by the British spitfire fighter planes cockpit, so the main hands tap into that past and the sub registers the present IWC, a mix of both styles. It does have that vintage feel but not overdone however the details in workmanship are amazing by today's standard of watch making by IWC.

In regards to the IWC: I think if we consider the coloring of the hands and the indexes at 3, 6, 9 and 12, not as faux patina, but just a color differentiation, you'll realize that the whole idea is to be able to quickly find orientation and tell the time. What do you think?

However I own the Big Eye had owned a speedy sold it (Biggest Regret) but will be replaced next year. The Speedy and the Seadweller are my favorite must have. The IWC Spitfire is a fully inhouse movement from the brand. Rolex used Zenith, IWC used the Valjoux in the past. But that's the past, the 69 calibers is made by IWC and not a re-work movement.

What is the real price if you bought all four new at the AD (assuming you negotiated the best discount you could get) . What would you expect them to sell for used three years from now?

I like what Breitling is doing going back to their more conservative and traditional design. The BigEye is an outstanding piece and wears incredibly well on the wrist. They don’t deny it, for years IWC used full Valjoux calibers with new rotor and top plate to reworked Valjoux for the pricey models. The IWC spitfire IW387901 which I own, same on this video is inspired by the Valjoux which IWC used and modified /reworked for years but that’s it. The 69380 is completely built in-house at the new factory as of 2017. The 69380 looks nothing like a Valjoux or Sellita. It’s totally different in every way, better finished with new winding mechanism. 33j jewels which is 8 more, Column wheel with vertical clutch not Cam lever. Engraved on the new design top plate filled in gold adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. Valjoux and sellita are not the sexiest movements, the 69380 is indeed full in house new design.

I loved the vid up to the Breitling. We started off with quality Longines then up in quality with the IWC but the Breitling looked like cheap plastic shit. Sorry just my opinion.

If i was a watch seller and reviewer and I would have saying that the new iwc spitfire using 7750 based movement i would feel ashamed .. educate yourself and then make a video… if you still think that iwc using for this just, in-house modified ETA I will file a lawsuit against them based on your informations in your video because when I bought it I was assured for the opposite. the description in the official web site is clearly state in house movement. Anything different is misleading advertising with purpose of profit and constitutes a fraud . So check and correct your infos

I just picked up a Longines BigEye as my first mechanical chronograph! I would have preferred it be manual wind to drop the thickness by 2mm but that would not have sold as well. They are already taking a risk in the mass market by making it no-date but I think that is the correct decision.

If it had a date window, I wouldn't have bought it.
