It's called Tunisian crochet. There are many patterns you can do in this style of crochet. You can do small pieces on a regular crochet hook, but it's much better to use a Tunisian hook, which is basically a knitting needle with a hook on the end.

For anyone interested, this stitch is called "MOCK RIBBING" or "FAUX KNIT RIBBING". I don't know what the video maker calls it though. Width wise, it doesn't have much of a stretch, but does have good stretch height wise. If you're going to use it instead of real ribbing, the fake ribbing design will run sideways instead of up and down.

see Dianna Aguire's comment above. She says she will make individual pieces or blocks, and sew them together to make an afghan. Just be sure all your blocks have the same number of rows. Don't crochet when tense or your work will come out a little smaller. Just breathe and relax, then start.

I'm not wild about that stitch. I think the back looks kind of messy and it really eats up the yarn. I'm not criticizing your crocheting. You did it beautifully. I just don't like the way that stitch looks on the back or how it uses so much yarn. If I want a knit look, I'd rather just knit and use less yarn and have a more uniform looking back.
