I remember seeing this at a flea market for 50 cents in the mid 90s and was stunned. I never saw this album in record stores or mentioned by anyone. I could walk into a Strawberry Records and find Killing Is My Business, Peace Sells, Rust in Peace, Countdown the then current Youthansia, but never this one. I loved this album instantly and personally place it higher for me above Peace Sells.

@@TheAdventuresofTNT Some of the "re-masters" use newly recorded tracks! What a joke. At that point it's a corruption of the original music, a fraud. My favorite Megadeth album by a wide margin. Every track on this one is fire, especially Darkest Hour, man what heart wrenching assault that song is. I read somewhere Dave wrote it in one sitting after hearing about Cliff's passing, bombed out on H. Keep going man, you should hear this stuff live, unreal. Did anybody see him on Celebrity Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? First person to win the fastest question, so he was the first to play. Won the million for his charity of choice and split. The rest of the celebrities did not win the million, even though they all stuck around and helped each other by shouting out what they thought were the correct answers from the peanut gallery. Unfuckingbelievable. Love him or hate him, the guy's a fucking genius. I was hoping you would get around to this one day.

Mustaine said 'Set the world afire' was the first song he wrote after being fired from Metallica... it was originally titled 'Megadeth'. But he wasn't happy w/ the initial version, so he rewrote it multiple times and finally made it onto Megadeth's 3rd album... 'Into the lungs of hell' had a keyboard intro that wasn't prominent on the original version... on the remixed version, u can hear it like a cinematic entry. The 3rd album was recorded w/ guitarist Jeff Young and drummer Chuck Behler... both were fired by 1989... Mustaine & Ellefson were jacked out of their mind on alcohol & drugs when this record wss made...but it sold better than 'Peace sells'🤘🤘

When listening to these 2 tracks on the album back to back they flow perfectly together. I always consider "Into the Lungs of Hell" the intro for "Set the World Afire" "Set the World Afire" is one of the most underrated Megadeth songs in my opinion. It is a beast. I am in the minority but I like this album better than Peace Sells on the strength of Into the Lungs of Hell, Set the World Afire, Hook in Mouth, In my Darkest Hour, and Liar. Those are by far the strongest songs on the album and the leftover 3 songs are a mixed bag. I know you already listened to "Hook in Mouth" I think I remember you doing "Liar" and I'm not sure if you did "In My Darkest Hour" so you might have hit all of the best tracks

My favorite Megadeth era was the first 4 records and for the very reason you stated, because he was so angry. All those songs aren't directed at Metallica but he was able to channel his anger at Metalllica and create some really good music. His songwriting improved on later records but nothing compares to the aggression and vitriol he exuded on those early records. But as someone much wiser than I once said, "You can't piss vinegar forever".

I REALLY appreciate you guys keeping this talent filled music alive. I believe the short story is that all three, James, Kirk and Dave have been Classically trained and that's why the guitar sounds like it does; many, many, MANY hours of elaborate, perfectly timed finger picking, I think James is the only one who prefers rhythm of the three, the other two are more comfy aggressively moving those fingers like mad scientists of metal!!!

He started writing set the world afire but the song was called megadeth at the time and he planned to name his new band Fallen Angel . They played this live from the beginning so not sure why it didn't surface til the 3rd record .

The guy who replaced Chris Poland is named Jeff Young, and he plays that big solo at the end of the song. Young is not as talented as Poland, but he is a virtuoso, too. He had a few tasty solos on "SO FAR, SO GOOD... SO WHAT!", which is the only album he appears on with Megadeth.

Set the world afire is definitely a masterpiece. Hook in mouth and set the world afire are in my top5 tracks. You haven’t done foreclosure of a dream yet, for what it’s worth lol Sleepwalker as well, that’s an amazing track.

They say your favourite albums by any band will be the ones you encountered first as a teen. I'm just really happy that So Far So Good So What was mine where Megadeth was concerned. Such a good album. Mary Jane is the standout track for me but the whole thing is golden.

Dude I feel like we have the same ear when it comes to listening to this band. Hook in Mouth is a staple on my lifting playlist and Five Magics (original) is my favorite deth song if I had to pick. But all four of their first albums have left a profound mark on me musically. If this is legit your first time hearing from these albums you are in for a treat.

YES!!! I’m so glad there’s a new Megadeth reaction!!! You should react to the song “When”. NOBODY has reacted to that song on KZread EVER!!! I know it’s not on So Far So Good So What, but it is an AMAZING song. If you’re looking for another SFSGSW song, then I HIGHLY recommened 502. SEVERLY underrated song!!!

I love that this album reminds me of the Fallout Games even though this album predated them by several years. It also perfectly encapsulates what Megadeth is and embraces their snarky, cocky attitude (using a 50s crooner about the same subject matter before literally dropping a bomb on it to show that the oldies are dead, Megadeth is where the kids are at!) But it definitely gives an impression of nuclear war and embraces the paranoia of the cold war which was rampant in the late 80s and early 90s. Thanks for checking it out!! I love all of Megadeth's albums but this one is about a B tier for me. I prefer the tightness and melody of albums such as Endgame and Countdown rather than the overt punk influence of this album. But this one sounds unlike any other album I've heard. The gritty slightly off key lo-fi production Gives So Far So Good So What an atmosphere like nothing else.

Recording technology improved a lot in the 90's, but I'd argue that the murky production values of a lot of lower budget 80's metal enhanced the atmosphere.

The opening of Set The World Afire are a sample from The Inkspots - I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire from 1941. The song was originally written in 1938 by Bennie Benjamin, Eddie Durham, Sol Marcus and Eddie Seiler. It was first recorded by Harlan Leonard And His Rockets three years later. The Inkspots version reached number 4 on the US pop chart. Got very popular after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. The song was also used in Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76

Hook in Mouth is super underrated and one of my favorites also! This album in general in fact is underrated! So many great tracks!! Set the World Afire was originally titled Megadeth and Mustaine started writing it on the bus ride home from being fired by Metallica, I believe. Great reaction!! Chris Poland wasn't on this album, it was Jeff Young, not to nitpick lol. 🤙🏻🤘🏻
