Awesome Merino Wool Tee Shirt for Travel: Outlier Ultrafine Merino T-Shirt Review

A premium tee with a price tag to match, the Outlier Ultrafine Merino T-Shirt is a great merino wool t-shirt for long-term, minimalist travelers. View Our Full Review: packhacker.com/travel-gear/ou...
The Outlier Ultrafine Merino T-Shirt is basically the tank of shirts. A bit on the expensive side, but worth the cost-you'll hardly ever need to wash it, and it lasts quite a long time.
Upon the first inspection of the shirt, you’ll notice an extremely soft feel and a thicker fabric than you’re used to. The Mackenzie 17.5, 195gsm Merino Jersey Wool is pleasantly comfortable and soft upon the first try on. You’ll hardly ever have to wash this shirt, and it almost seems to clean itself when hung in fresh air for a while. Wool is nature’s antimicrobial fabric that doesn’t hold a smell. Be careful when caring and washing this shirt. We recommend washing by hand, or putting the shirt into the washer at a cold and more delicate setting. If you’re OK forking out a decent chunk of change for a T-Shirt, you certainly won’t regret it once you’re wearing the Outlier Ultrafine Merino T-Shirt.

    love that "baby holding' scene, great review on the t-shirt, I am currently starting a minimalist journey but as a college student the t-shirt is definitely expensive, but once i got the money to spare, this will definitely be the thing i want. Thanks.

    Jocelyn Choo hey Jocelyn! Thanks for the compliment on the baby scene 👶 It's certainly expensive. If you want a cheaper option, you could try something from Woolly Clothing or Unbound Merino. We haven't fully reviewed these yet, but they're in the works. Best of luck beginning your minimalist journey!

    Love this review,Hard to believe it's in that good of condition after the ware profile of approximately 3 days per week for the last year and a half. This shirt knocks it out of the park! I need a good wearable, reliable shirt to pack in my gear. Thanks for the education!

    Your channel is truly amazing! Thanks for all the content. I am considering getting both the GR2 pack and the oultiers T shirt based on your reviews after a lot of searching and studying different options. Thank you! I saw you also loved the Patagonia Nano puff which I own and is an amazing item. I was wondering if you ever had the opportunity to try to Patagonia Nano puff Bivy Pullover? I love the kangaroo pocket at the airport. You should definitely try out!!

    Great review on this shirt. I was just wondering how long does it take for the shirt to dry? Really enjoying the review videos.

  • @PackHacker

    @PackHacker

    Hey Mike - the drying time of the shirt largely depends on the climate you're in (humidity, sunlight, etc). We can confirm, however, that it dries much more quickly than a cotton shirt when tested side by side. Glad you're enjoying the reviews! Great review. Have you noticed any issues on the back of the shirt from the cordura on your GR2? I've heard that they can cause some bad wear and pilling, and I was curious about your experience.

    Hey Ryan! We haven't personally observed this, even with heavy use with a fully-loaded 12 kilo (26.5 pounds) GR2, although we have heard of some issues that users have when using heavier packs. There's some conversation on this going around on this reddit thread if you're interested in taking a look: www.reddit.com/r/Outlier/comments/6j7zje/outlier_ultrafine_merino_tshirt_review_after_200/

    Hey Tom! We seem to be very similar in size - I'm 6' 2" and 200 pounds. What size shirt did you get from Outlier? Also, what sort of soap/shampoo do you recommend using to clean the shirt?

    A couple tips on taking care of Merino. or any wool shirt. Wash in the sink with a small amount of ph neutral soap. Drain the water than soak in clear water for a few minutes to get the soap out. Never wring out a wool shirt. Always squeeze the water out. You may Felt the shirt. lay a towel out flat with the shirt on top the towel and roll the towel tight and squeeze the rolled Towle. You will now have about 95% -97% of the water out. Hang for a few hours to dry OR put the shirt on to wear and it will be dry in 15 minutes. Another trick is to soak the clean shirt in a lanolin solution See the Web for easy instructions. Lanolin is the natural sheep oil that was removed in making the garment. The lanolin will repel body moisture and vaporize it allowing the body moisture to pass through the weave of the cloth and at the same time make the cloth so smooth and added comfort. An old wool water repel method I learned years ago from my British neighbors. I dress mostly in wool year around and use the lanolin on my base layer, mid layer and outer layer. Wool being a natural fiber has a temperature range that keeps the sheep cool in summer and warm in winter, by the individual fibers expanding and contracting. And no odor. Have you ever smelled a smelly sheep? Me neither. A wool shirt treated with lanolin is smooth as a baby's butt, summer or winter with no itch. As I type this, I'm wearing a mid-weight V neck treated with lanolin and it is so comfortable. I even wear mid weight button, short sleeve shirt in the summer.. .

    Hi Jason - The Dreamweight is awesome - so incredibly light. In 2 months of testing it in wearing rotation, it held up well. The only thing is the fit isn't quite right for me - it's sort of wider at the bottom. Will stick with the Runweight and Ultrafine for now 🙂 - Tom

    Hello, I just found your channel today (through your PD travel pack review), and have watched many of your videos already. Thank you for the detailed yet concise reviews! It's hard to balance both elements. Since this is an old video, so I am not sure if you'd still check comments on it. I am wondering if you'd still feel comfortable wearing merino wool in humid climates that are above 30 degrees Celsius (eg. Summer in Taiwan, or places like Hawaii)? Also, do you have any brand recommendations for female users? Thank you!

    Hi Kerianna! We've found lighter weight merino to work great in humid climates. Tom traveled with merino in Southeast Asia and found its moisture-wicking properties to stand true! We're working on finding some women's merino gear! -Hannah

    Hey Jeffrey! Merino wool can absorb and retain up to 30% of its weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch. As the fabric wicks away moisture, those smelly bacteria don't have the moist environment they need to thrive. You can read more about this in our Merino Wool Guide packhacker.com/guide/merino-wool-travel-clothing/ - let us know if you have any more questions! 😊 - Rebecca

    In our tests, the second day of normal urban use already had sings of peeling :-( If this is the best merino t-shirt, we don't wanna test the others. Definitively merino doesn't seem a great material to us. On the other side, we are very happy with the @bluffworks t-shirts!
