    As George Santayana said "those who forget history are condemned to repeat it." There's a similar theme in another Who song "Won't Get Fooled Again." In the chorus of that song, written during a time when groups like the Black Panthers and the Weathermen were calling for revolution, the protagonist says he will "tip my hat to the new constitution/Take a bow for the new revolution/Smile and grin at the change all around/Pick up my guitar and play/Just like yesterday/Then I'll get on my knees and pray/We don't get fooled again..." Sounds like it could be applied to our current world situation..

    The Who were at their inception, first and foremost, an R & B band. It's difficult to see after almost 60 years of their work defining what hard rock is, but the funk was never far from the surface. You should hear them do "Heat Wave".

  • @Azabaxe80

    @Azabaxe80

    @Some Guy You are missing the point. And the link between R&B (the essence of funk) and rock and roll. Queen doing "Another One Bites the Dust" was a stretch, because they (save John Deacon) were never into R&B. Led Zeppelin doing "The Crunge" was not a stretch because their background was the blues and some RnB. The Who doing "Eminence Front" makes total sense, because they were very representative of mod RnB culture.

    This was a sample of Pete Townsend's writing style towards the end of The Who's great run as one of the world's greatest rock bands. They had lost their drummer, Keith Moon to a drug overdose, and replaced him with Kenny Jones, formerly of the Small Faces. This was the first album The Who put out with Kenny who did a competent job, he wasn't as flamboyant as Keith, but everyone was getting older and mellowed out a little, so their style was reflecting it. When Pete did his solo work, it sounded a lot like this. Social commentary, current events and such. Not love songs or teenage angst anymore, but the bewildering taking notice of adulthood. The loud and obnoxious guitar riffs were gone, replaced by catchy and whimsical picking and strumming. The Who are perpetually on tour. It's just Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend left now, supported by Zach Starkey on drums (Ringo Starr's son, and prodigy of Ringo and Keith) and a different Bass player since John Entwhistle passed away (again, another overdose).

    The Who fan ever since start like music. been born raised in Rio moved to LA . Moved in 81 when was 19 and start seeing all my idols live, remember my first which at the time was living dream Allman Brothers. Was even at the Stones concert when people almost killed Prince,smart he run out of stage. Was around October 83 and The Who had a concert for this new album, to make even more fantastic The Clash played before. L A Coliseum jammed but was able to walk near the stage,The Clash well what can I say when they were finished was out of breath. My girl and I sat on the field to rest drinking water and bear and smoking not a Marlboro . We were there relaxing when the lights went off, and on in all sorts of colors, it was on. They open with a song from the new album with Roger on vocal, He is The Who voice after all and what a voice, played a couple of oldies, when the intro of E Front start before Pete solo came on i was already hooked with the music beat,his solo took me even higher and when he start singing already had on the same level of Love reign on..... . Sure knew he was a good singer, he had release a solo album the year before a good one by the way. Now E Front he wrote for his tune of voice, Roger singing would not feat this tune. Anyway when it was over, got in my car and drove not straight home, went to Tower records to buy the album and still today is on all my playlists.

    When this album came out I was a junior in high school. We went to the record store on release day and bugged them until they cut a box open and sold me a record. We went to my house and put the record on. This was the last song on side 1. It hadn’t been played on the radio yet, and it was different. As I listened I thought, “This is either the best or worst song on the record, but I think it’s probably the best.” And it was. I remember like it was yesterday.

    I’ve been a huge huge fan most of my life I mean one of like the top 10 Who fanatics that exist on the planet and this is the first time I’ve heard ANYONE truly understand this song! I had to explain to friends for years they didn’t get it and honestly I think that you got it even better than me!

    Man! Pete Townsend put that bad ass guitar solo right up front and set the tone for the whole thing. You gotta listen to it again. One of the most complex pieces of guitar work you’ll ever hear.

    The Who is the most under rated band ever. These guys are filthy! Killer band. All are great at their instruments and Roger has a great voice. Keith is so insane on the drums. John is Mr. Chill on the bass and Pete is always going nuts on lead. Fun to watch them

    Right on, bro and sis! That's my theme song right there! Best song ever written: the lead-in, the vocals, Pete's guitar work, the lyrics.....everything. Many things in life really _are_ an eminence front. They've done a live orchestral version with the NY Symphony Orchestra that's killer too, if you can find it.
