Hello! As it was me taking the video of the afterburners, I fugured I'd answer a few questions. First, this was done in the 'hush house' at Kandena AFB, Okinawa, Japan. The engines are in the process of being tested after getting rebuilt and then replaced in the plane. One of my students (I was teaching recreational scuba courses through Tsunami Scuba in Okinawa at the time) was in charge of teaching other mechanics how to do these tests. He invited me to join in, and of course, hell yeah! So, yes, it is VERY loud. i was wearing earplug protectors AND over the ear hearing protectors, and it was still loud. You can see one of the mechanics walking just in front of me at one point, he was saying something, but I couldn't hear a thing. The sound you hear on the video is greatly reduced from the real thing. Surprisingly, it wasn't very hot in the building, there is SO much air moving the heat is blasted right out of the back of the building. While I was filming, most of the time I had my camera jammed tight against the massive I-beam you can see to the left. Even so, I couldn't hold it steady. There is so much air, everything rattles, inluding your upper teeth. Yes, I could feel them moving! Well, it sure seemed like it. The plane is held in one place by the landing hook at the back, attached to a large loop thing attached to the floor. After the tests were done, we rolled the plane back a few feet (by hand!) to disengage the hook. The 'turkey feathers' at the back of the afterburner will open and close depending on how much thrust is needed. They are made out of titamium. Usually fully open while the afterburner is going. When the afterburner is off and it's just that massive amount of air going through the engine, the tighter the opening is closed, the more thrust there is. Sort of like putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose, the water squirts faster and further. Very similar for the air. So, in conclusion, as you can imagine, this was one of the best days in my life, topped later that day as I was sitting inside the F-15 running the throttles up and down. Yeah. it's nice to have good friends in the US Military! By the way, I am Canadian and totally non military.

At the time of 1:00, the engine is on full afterburner, so it will produce close to 29,000 pounds of thrust, boosting the plane to around twice the speed of sound, at around 1536 miles per hour. It's probably best not to roast your marshmallows in the afterburner. At 0:34, it's around 2/3 of the way to full afterburner, so around 19333.33333 pounds of thrust. All of this could be found by a couple searches on Google and a tiny bit of a 5-minute research.
