That’s one sharp looking machine

Bike sounds great! I just picked up a 2012 and have since modified it to a swing arm chopper… love it! With the tank lift and extended forks I can get 75 miles out of the tank; so, I take spare gas with me on long trips…😂

The 72 is quite comfortable and has more power, but I hands down prefer the Iron. Totally different styles. I have to be in the mood for the 72, but like riding the Iron any time... Thanks for watching!

Nice trip you all had. I use to ride my 1980 Sportster from Whidbey Island to Forest Grove. Then 4 years later my 1983 FXWG to Forest Grove. Now I ride to Winthrop or backside of St Helens. PNW has many great roads to ride! Thanks for your video!

I recently visited Motorcycle Show in Washington DC and absolutely fell in love with 72 model. This is how I've got to this video. Nice ride, beautiful country!

82 sportster, Denver to Roswell NM was my run for a few years. 500 miles, I was a lot younger then. I knew where every gas station was tucked away.

I've always been a standard and sport bike rider, so I'm not a big fan of forward controls. However, I have to say, the 72 with it's forward controls and mini-apes is quite comfortable to ride. Your Harley looks amazing man

The previous owner purchased the Scream'n Eagle Super Tuner Pro and had the dealer dyno tune it. It only had 1,200 miles on it when I purchased the 72 and it runs spot-on. Crazy fast for just having air filter kit and exhaust... Thanks for watching and commenting dsjkak1!

Im extremely late asking this but i see a cpl folks commenting on gas mileage. I know it has a peanut tank but, in your experience, what is a decent average mpg you were getting on that trip? Assuming someone drove roughly the same way you did? Thanks in advance!

great video. I would be sweating riding out of town with that 2 gal. tank. I rode the '72 when they came out. Very nice bike. handles and rides much better than you would think just looking at it. I'm not a fan of forward controls but they work well on the '72. I saw a control relocation kit for it in the P&A catalogue that moves them back about 2". That could be the perfect location. keep posting videos of your rides with it.

Shawn I do love your vlogs. So much so, that I'm looking into getting a Harley in the near future, and I've got my sights set on the '72. Ever since seeing 'Easy Rider' as a kid, I've always liked the look of Dennis Hopper's bike in that movie. Hopefully I'll be satisfied when eventually I get my hands on one. Nice vid, as always! You know, the flashy thing still makes me a little self conscious when riding it. But I'm getting better about not thinking about it, the more I ride it. Helps to motovlog while on it, keeps me thinking more about the ride, and less about it's flashiness. It's actually very fun to ride... Thanks for watching and commenting!

the seventy two looks like a really nice ride, how were the arms and arse after that 400 miler?

Robert, I rode through SE Oregon in July. From Winnemucca to Lakeview gas was sparse to nonexistent. I did not see many bikes. In Lakeview I saw a guy riding a Sportster with two REI bottles strapped to the sissy bar.

I ride with 14 inch apes and forward controls on my 2010 Forty-Eight. The only bikes ive rlly ridden have been chopper/bobber harleys with the occasional buddies cbr. I have no problem getting low on corners and getting up high speeds(no glass with 3/4 helmet). I've even swung my peg up so it didnt scrape so i could get real low on a tight corner a couple times before. You'll get used to it and more confident as time goes.

I had a 883 back in 2003 I bought new. I was 19 at the time. Rode with my dad 400 miles to visit his hometown and about 200 miles into the ride my ass was completely numb. Dad laughed at me the next 200 miles while he enjoyed his “ old mans bike” 😂. When we finally got there I felt like a mule had kicked me in the ass for 10 hours straight. And after a few days we had to ride back. That was my last sportster road trip 😂. But to be fair now at 36 even a dyna wide glide kills me! Time for a touring bike I guess

I ride mine at 80-90 all the time where I live. One stretch is 70 miles with 1 town. I have to stop at the town before it to get gas

Nice 72 man. I have a 2002 dyna wide glide but rode a sportster for 10 years. I like my big twin but I do miss the sporty. Sometimes that wide glide just feels like a handful for running around on. You have to respect it in turns and concentrate harder on manipulating things. The sportster was much easier to ride and so agile it would almost drive itself. Don't get me wrong on a long ride I'll take the wide glide all day long but sometimes I think the sporty was more " general fun". I wish I'd never sold my 2003 883 and just kept it for short runs

Just did 1500 miles in 5 days on a modified 08 nightster. NYC to skyline drive/brp, down western VA. Then to Delaware then back home. Mustang vintage seat and road king shocks

Nice ride...sounds good...looks good...but your throw-out bearing isn't long for this world I fear! Ride on and I like your productions. Very well done! I was born in Roseburg and raised in Salem. Been a lot of changes there in the last 55 years!

The seat is a Mustang Vintage Solo. I've also purchased the matching pillion seat. The seat is very comfortable and you no longer have that feeling of slipping off the back. My wife really likes the pillion seat too. However, she would like me to get a backrest added for her... She says that would make it perfect. The pillion comes off with on screw, so it's only on when she wants to go with. Thanks for watching and commenting Hawaiian Guy!

At about 70 miles per tank that is roughly 6 fill ups for 400 miles. That is a lot of stops but I would guess the ride was worth it. Great vid!

More like 90 to 100 miles per tank..

I used to live in Bend, OR, and made that trip across the pass through sisters and Detroit Lake to Salem many times, and yes it is beautiful. I always worry about hitting a deer, because they jump out all along that stretch, so have to keep your eyes open and be alert. My favorite bike ever since I got out of the Navy in 1965 has been the Sportster CH, so this new 72 is a modern version, and I absolutely love it! I think by adjusting the rear shocks and adding the spring seat, it would be much easier to travel long distances. By the time you got to the restaurant, how was your butt...was it numb or did the bike give you a nice ride without making you a little numb...lol?! I am curious about how you fared going that far on the 72...?

Good ol Sportster CH... Do you still have her? I haven't ridden a 72 with the stock seat, as I purchased this one with 1,100 miles just as you see her. The Mustang seat that the previous owner installed is unbelievably comfortable, and the only thing that keeps me from traveling long distances is the 2.1 gallon tank that kicks off the fuel light after 1.5 gallons of use (between 60 and 70 miles). These new EFI rubber mounted engines are shockingly smooth and produce no numbing of any extremities... The stock suspension on the 72 was so good, I never made changes to them. With a larger tank, I wouldn't think twice about touring on the 72. Just a pleasure to ride overall...! Thanks for watching and commenting Hypo327 !

What size are those handelbars and do you have a part number on them and how comfortable was that ride? i am looking to maybe switch my stock xlc bars for those, but am wondering if there was a noticeable fatigue in the arms.

Scott Wilson It doesn't really bother me that some don't like the look of the shield. It's very comfortable on longer rides, so I don't mind a little trade off in looks... I like riding these type bikes with an open faced helmet also. I just can't find a mic that works good enough for motovlogging with an open face. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I'm using the GoPro wrist strap that's included in the Remote Accessory Mount Kit.

That's my kinda ride, just go around the body in the tarp that fell outta someone's truck on the way to Detroit Lake! Is that where it gets its name from? Lol, awesome road and scenery, would love to run it too and your bike sure has a nice sparkle in the sun. Ride safe.

MrSlowestD16 There was a point going over that pass that I started getting deeply concerned! But the Harley dealer that put on the ride knew there would be what they called 1.5 tanks on the ride, so there was a scheduled stop where they supplied fuel. Whew! The "1.5 tanks" was a reference to the quantity of fuel before reserve of the 48's, and the 72's that uses the 48 tank... I was the only 72 in the whole group. I guess there were four or five 48's there. Thanks for watching and for all your awesome comments!

Shawn Smoak Ah, gotcha. You ever think about putting the 3.1 peanut on there? Seems like the smart thing to do to get some extra range out of it. If you youtube 48 one of the top hits is a walk-around of somebody with a regular tank on theirs - it actually looks pretty good, but not quite as nice as the peanut. And np, you have good vids, haha.

As odd as this may seem (hard for me to believe I'm saying this), but the 72 is very comfortable to ride long distances, so a larger tank would be awesome! Robert Robb has ordered a 4.5 gallon tank for his 72 and is prepping it for painting. He mounted the tank raw, and it looked great! Can't wait to see it completed! That would be the cat's meow! 4.5 gallons? Hell yeah! That would be like my 2007 1200 Low. You are ready to get off by the time the fuel light comes on...

Have you tuned this bike? I have one was looking at the vance and hines fuel pak but can't find one for it. What did you use if you did tune it?

You and everyone else who ride in a large group with people you don't know are more tolerant than me. I've been on a few rides like the one your on and twice someone else almost hit me. There won't be a third. Just a few friends.

I love that bike. Can I ask, when group riding, did you have trouble having to stop and fill up twice as much as the other bikes? Was there a feeling of annoyance with other riders? I always rode alone, so it's not something i have experience with.

The only issue was going over the 84 mile pass that had no fuel services. But the dealer had gas trucked up to the halfway point for all of us 72, 48 and other custom small tank riders. The other riders were fine with the extra stops. I think they must be used to it from all the rides they do during the summer.. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Shawn Smoak I usually carry 2 16oz Gatorade bottles with 91 Octane in them in my fork bag for emergencies. I learned that the hard way!lol

Please some help in getting mixed info in gonna buy a 72 first bike but I like in Wyoming once you hit the interstate it's 100 miles for gas in some places can you put a bigger tank on it

The tires on the 72 and Iron have that tread running down the middle. Can you feel that when you're running on the highway? Does the ride feel kinda bumpy, especially on the back tire?

The 72 has the stock Dunlop's and the Iron has the stock Michelin tires and I have no complaints at all. They do great on the highway and back roads... However, the wheels on both bikes were not correctly balanced from Harley, even though they have balance weights on the wheels. I used 'RideOn' liquid sealer/balancer and both are nice and smooth now. The wheels hopped like crazy at 70 mph+ before... Thanks for watching and commenting *****!

The full face helmet acts like a big microphone. It will capture almost all the noise of the exhaust pipe. A 3/4 helmet is much quieter.

only problem with this is starting from a Starbucks, If it had been a Dunkin's it would have been the start of a great ride..

how´s the mileage of that thing? dat tank looks very poor to me. nice ride and scenery anyway, greetings from austria!

MrGeati6783 On average, the fuel light (reserve light) comes on at 62 miles. The averaged MPG is 45. The '72' in stock form gets better mileage... The tank is only 2.1 gallons total, with a 0.6 gallon reserve. The '72' was meant to be an around town or city cruiser, so Harley was after the look more that practicality. The tank that Harley used on this bike is actually off their Sportster '48', but you rarely hear 48 owners complaining about the size of the tank... The 72 owners, like myself, must venture out of town more often. Thanks for watching and commenting!

It was most likely a Kuryakyn Hypercharger... Do search and see if that's what you were looking at.

You should carry a spare fuel bottle strapped to your bike if you got a peanut tank

What was the reasoning for breaking them into groups? I remember him saying that triumphs and v-rods were in one class and his bike was another? He also referred to his class as "that's the fast guys". Not criticising, I am genuinely curious. Thanks for any information

They were breaking the riders down into most experienced and/or faster first and down. Don't want to make newer riders uncomfortable with a bunch of faster riders ripping around... Thanks Ricky!

@@ShawnSmoak I figured that was the reasoning, but didn't want to assume. The runs I've been on, groups of friends rode together and faster riders just did their own thing. Thought it was interesting that the event coordinator would organize riders by bike

I use Motoex 4T 10W50 and change it every 5,000 miles. I haven't had to add oil to any of my Sportsters between oil changes. Of course, the 72 only has 3,300 miles on it, so it's only had one oil change... Thanks for watching and commenting!
