I think the Int penalty represents how most Awakened Animals lack a formal education, making things like Arcana, Society, Occultism, and Crafting hard for them. Remember, Alternative Attribute Boosts are a core rule and Paizo assumes anyone can get the 2 Free Boosts if they don't like the base attributes for their Ancestry, so an Awakened Animal that was once a Wizard's familliar is free to choose, say, +1 Dex, + Int for their boosts.

Ok fair, but in a medieval world a lot of people would lack formal educations. 10 is the standard Commoner human intelligence and it covers everyone from serf to merchant.

I think a charisma penalty makes more sense as an awakened animal would likely struggle to interact with normal society. Hell even dwarves get a charimsa penalty just for being xenophobic and reserved towards other ancestries.

I would let players use awakened animal lore for lore involving the animal type they are. So an Awakened Lion could use their Awakened Animal lore for lore about cats and cat adjacent creatures(like a weretiger or a Lamia) Edit: Actually sea legs applys really well to Elephants bc they love swimming and they use their trunks as snorkels, at least I didn't correct you on the Coyote thing ☺️

I love the idea of playing an awakened animal. So many fun concepts both thematically and mechanically. Bloodhound Detective/Tracker/Bounty-Hunter House Cat cat-burglar. Pig that loves to eat and is a chef. Maybe something like a reskinned alchemist that gives out consumables that provide buffs. Some extraordinary circumstance caused an animal companion of a druid player to become awakened before the events of the game, so another player plays that character as an awakened animal. From a roleplay angle, think parent and angsty teenager. Horse that has a tight relationship with another character who you partner with as a mount. Parrot bard. Octopus Grappler. I could go all day!

Land Legs seems like it's functionally what Water-Dwelling gets, but from the other angle. Also, whoever came up with "You're so Cute!" during brainstorming needs a raise.

If anyone ever builds Puss in Boots from Shrek as a PF2E character, this feat HAS to be on the list.

At 23:35 with Awakened Stride 17th level feat you state that you can spend 3 actions instead of 2 from Wild Stride to move three times with that bonus speed. Looking at your PDF there's no action listed. It's a straight upgrade to Wild Stride where you move 3x for the same 2 actions with the bonus to your speed. That's amazing! An Unbound Stride psychic running awakened animal can spend 3 actions to move 5x for a max of 200feet before gear. Monk base with psychic archetype and it gets ridiculous.

brb, making an Awakened Bee. After dealing the the horrors of Knowing, she tries to track down the rest of her hive (who were also awakened but taken; what someone would want with a hive of Awakened bees she doesn't know)

My first awakened character is a Crane Hermit monk who had cultivated so much he can take form of a human and etc. I love it.

I can't help but notice it says nothing about the life span of an Awakened Animal being affected. Which makes me worried they might retain their normal animal ones. So it's like, "congratulations on becoming an Awakened Mouse! You've only got 3 years to live..."

I have looked into all Ancestries and Heritages that grant flight. Most are 2-3 Ancestry feats. If 3 feats, like the Flying Awakened Animal or Strix, they usually get a "Jump" like small fly early, with a boost to that early one's speed, with permanent flight as the 3rd feat. If 2 feats, like the Skyborn Tengu or Nephilim, they get a once per day fly at mid levels, with a 2nd feat to make it permanent at higher levels. They said it in one or more of the streams about Starfinder 2E - Flight in Pathfinder is heavily restricted, especially at low levels, because the game assumes largely melee or very short range combat, while in Starfinder Flight is less restricted because everyone can cast Gun.

I want to see an Awakened Elephant who has spent its entire life swimming with its trunk held above the water suddenly have its trunk slip under and realize it can breathe under water (for ten minutes). It would be unstoppable.

Got one character with this ancestry in mind before the book came out - an Awakened Squirrel Gunslinger. Why yes I was watching a trailer for “Squirrel With A Gun” at the time. :P

If you want to play as an Aquatic in an all land based campaign, just buy the Land-Delver's Chair from HotW and you’ll be able to breathe fine with a 20ft move speed. It’s common so if you got permission for an Aquatic character just spend your first 5 gold on that before anything else.

23:38 Doesn't even require the third action! It's just when you use Wild Stride. Seems amazing for any character wanting some real mobility. Also, just flicking through my own copy of Howl of the Wild, centaurs and minotaurs also get the beast trait, so some options there. They do, however, also have the humanoid trait, so awakened animal is still the only pure beast ancestry.

5:09 Int is knowledge too, not merely aptitude. And since variant ability scored is allowed - i see it as a suggestion that they often know less due to less social linked heritage and etc.

I view it the same way.

Just realized that a decent justification for flying animals losing their flight is that their time perception has been distorted.

The Book of The Dead has an interesting side bar about flight in the ghost archetype section that my table uses. A player who's ancestry/heritage should be able to fly starts with a fly speed of 15 and any feat that would normally affect their ability to fly in some way instead increases that speed by 5. Of course its up to the GM and their willingness to plan encounters around flying players but it has worked great for our table at least. I hope anyone who didn't know about this finds it useful!

Ok so my character idea - a deer named Bambi who is an animal instict barbarian. Out for revenge, looking for the hunter that killed his mom! 😅

I find the concept of fully non-humanoid playable characters in TTRPGs very fascinating, unfortunately not many do it and those that give that opportunity do not make much use of the non-human thing mechanically... I hope this one works as well in practice as it does on paper, and hey - maybe it'll open a door for more (I know there's the spider people, but in effect the shapeshifting thing nullifies all disadvantages of being non-humanoids and at the table, they're humanoid most of the time.)

In Core 2 there is dragonborn ancestry. Take dragon disciple archetype and job's done.

People are really sleeping on Scurry. Medium and larger creatures provide light cover when you're in their space. Also, creatures do not receive a Reaction until their first turn begins in combat, so the movement will not trigger Reactive Strike. It is an amazing feat if you're a squishy caster, and even if you're not, you can do stuff like run under the ogre boss at the start of the fight. Pre-battle repositioning is tactically gold, especially for a tiny creature which might have special movement types.

Elephants can swim really good. They can go for 30 miles and for six continuous hours.

I could see a druid or wizard where one player is the humanoid, the other 1 or 2 could act as their animal companion, and the other their mount. Or a variety of similar combinations

So now there are 3 different ways to make: dog-people, cat-people, rat-people, snake-people, lizard-people, bird-people, hyena-people, monkey-people, frog-people, kind of fox-people, and again kind of... rhino-people (maybe you could also make a case for bat-people with the Nyktera heritage for sprite).

Ok, before watching any further than 3:18, so he might talk or throw this suggestion out but... Awakened Tiger or Wolf and use the Animal Instinct Barbarian. "Why? Why did you make me think? Feel these feelings? I was happy in my ignorance! Now I have insecurities! Debts!" And they rage out as a coping mechanism.

Makes me think of that race of cybernetically enhanced bears from Starfinder.

Awakened Stride doesn't say it costs more actions, so I'd argue it's two actions to do a three action stride with the bonus speed and concealment.

Honestly, I think that it’d be fine for Flying Animals to have the Take Flight action as part of their heritage and at least get a level one Ancestry to make them more unique.

For what it’s worth, in my opinion Take Flight would be an absolutely awful substitute for High Jump because flying upwards is difficult terrain so to fly 5ft up would already take up 10 of your 15speed. I really wish Take Flight just came with the heritage while still looking full flight to 2 feats and level 9.

23:37 It doesn't say anything about increasing the action cost surprisingly. So it's a lot stronger than it sounds. Awakened Stride is effectively 2 actions to Stride 3 times with up to a 10ft bonus and concealed. This ultimately means something like a monk or thief rouge with monk dedication could just run 150ft then flurry of blows into someone's face our of nowhere which is hilarious.

I'm just happy that we get options for aquatic campaigns and that I can be a pretty mermaid 😅

I'm actually playing a Strength of Thousands game with a variant of the Awakened Animal Ancestry, a Hyena Druid. Decided for narrative purposes not to be bipedal/have hands, just because a talking animal is something I wanna have to work around (aka learning Telekinetic Hand/etc to do basic tasks, etc), but it's been a really fun Ancestry to kind of dive into... a good excuse to look up a bunch of animal videos and articles, too!

Intelligence flaw is the correct choice: they are awakened, yes however their book-knowledge is still missing, because they never had a book... or knowledge before. Awakened stride: I'm maybe wrong here but you don't need to use 3 actions it just upgrade that 2 action activity.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the verbiage, but I don't see anywhere in Awakened Stride that it says you have to spend a third action. Wild Stride is a two action activity that lets you stride twice, and Awakened Stride just says you can use it to stride three times.

I just thought of the Awakened animal lore. I would likely allow it for anything relating to the animal they were. Werewolves and such feels like a weird stretch to me that does not really make sense. Why would a random bear who got awakened suddenly know about werewolves?

I absolutely love the concept of this ancestry, but after reading it, I was a bit underwhelmed as it looks underpowered compared to other ancestries. Maybe I'll change my mind after this video. I hope so.
