Scott. I wish I could start my business over there. Haha. In India the product is expensive or at par with international prices . As you said we do charge $300-500 for Art de shine graphene coating with full correction along with glass, alloy and plastic coating.

Setting your prices can be difficult. You have to figure out what the market will bear and create value based on what you deliver for the price you charge. Here in PHX, the competition is fierce. There are an unlimited number of weekend warriors that advertise complete pkgs for $150 or coatings starting at $99 .Most if then got their training by watching KZread videos and buying a cheap polisher and decided they were qualified detailers. They don't have insurance and have no longevity in the community. They will undercut anyone to get the job and quickly begin receiving negative reviews due to their shitty work and/or damaging vehicles. It's important to know who your competition is and what they charge so that when someone calls and tells you they can get it done cheaper elsewhere, you can educate them about what you offer and I still confidence that you are insured and that you're going to stand behind your work and will still be around in a year or 2 or 3 if the coating you installed fails prematurely etc. Having been in business at the same location for over 20 years has helped me create a solid customer base many of whom have left reviews that ultimately help build confidence in choosing me to service their cars. When quoting prices, it's always better to include extra add-ons than to lower your price.

Absolutely. Your market will vary, but unfortunately there's always someone willing to do it cheaper.

I have found that doing $1,000-level work, once or twice…for free…can be the kickstart you are looking for. Choose the recipient, car and conditions carefully, but the car IS your ad.

If you do good work you can find the clientele to pay it. I'm in a small town and charge minimum 280 and as much as 790 for filthy lifted extended cab trucks.. that's a full detail. Which is a subjective term... but I do better work than the 199 dollar guys by far.

@@ScottHD lol love the false humility 🤣 but seriously when I looked up detailers in Tyler, ur shop was the only one that was consistently working on really high end cars and seems to have a good reputation. Also would be interested in hearing more about the performance of the professional grade ceramic coating u guys offer.

@@MatthewHartsuch thank you! We have been working on the exotics for about the last 10 or so years (almost to year 26 in this industry now). Coatings since about 2012. We have offered about 3-4 different ones as our pro only coating over the years. One of the things I wish some of these companies would do is quit changing a coating that actually worked fine. They had it right, then change it and then things go downhill because they feel the need to throw Graphene, or titanium oxide or whatever else in it to stay relevant.

As someone who is starting out, this channel has been a godsend among a few others. Sometimes I forget you have a shop because I am accustomed to watching the paint sealant tests. As a Pro detailer and all of the tests that you have performed, what coatings do you use for your clients and why? Also, with all of the tests you have done, do you plan on switching? thank you!

Giving your customers a little lagniappe like complimentary window cleaning or carpet vacuum is a great way to stand out in a crowded field. Same as adding a little bit of puppy dog to your yootoob videos!

Great video. Trying to learn as I go and is dependent on the vehicle and area. I am pretty sure I'm low compared to others but I try to research the local prices. On another note how do you clean windows. I always seem to be going over 2 or 3 times. Thanks

Great video! Would you ever recommend open air, non garage ceramic coating applications if you don’t have a shop?

  • @snail415

I would recommend against it. It’s like painting outside of a booth, and then wondering why there are so many issues with the finish. Everything from dust to flash times will be a problem for you, unless you live in that perfect place that I don’t know about… I don’t have anything more than a garage, but when I’m laying down a coating, I suffer through it without a fan or any moving air. While that isn’t preferred either, the end result (given the crap-load of prep work you just spent to get there) is worth the short-term inconvenience.

I am surprised by the numbers you are giving. My basic coating takes me 4-5 hours on a car. About 2 hours to do the detailed wash and chemical decontamination and drying. About half an hour to degrease, about 2 hours to coat the vehicle (I use single layer products) and about 30 mins to final step (clean windows, wipe door jambs, dress tires and mags. I charge 900$ to do that. If the client wants polishing, 3 hours per step I always suggest a single step of polishing since I am mobile and 99% of people can't see the difference between 1 or 2 step of correction.. and I charge 32$ per step. All these prices are canadian so calculate 30% less if you convert to US$. How do you get to 16 hours to do coatings? Do you always go with 2 step corrections? 1500$ is pretty good, that would be almost 2000 CAN$. I guess if your clients are mostly exotic owners, that would not be a hard sell on a car worth that much. Most of my clients are in luxury and sports cars, mostly german (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche represent about 70% of my business) and a lot of Teslas now. I get very very regular vehicules and when I do they are usually either people wanting to sell or just purchased a used car and want it brought back to life or someone with disaster cars that have never been worked on in 10 years and car washes can't do anything for them :) Maybe I should look into getting a shop, just don't lke to have the overhead because here in Montreal, winters seems like it would be a terrible time for detailing services, I know that as a mobile guy I pretty much have 4 months+ of vacation from November to April. Depends on the weather but once it gets cold, people stop calling.
