Avoid This Type of Milk With Your Matcha Latte 🙅🏻‍♀️

The answer, if you ask me, is any plant milk you like BUT I would not recommend dairy milk, and I promise I’m not just saying that because I’m vegan.
When you mix matcha directly with milk, the casein protein in dairy milk binds to polyphenols in matcha, alters the bioavailability and blocks absorption of antioxidants. In short, you’re missing out on potential health benefits that matcha has to offer.
The good news is, this isn’t an issue with plant milk, so opt for something like oat, almond, soy or whatever else you’d like! It’s better for the planet anyway 🙂

    Do you have a source for this info? I haven't done a deep dive on it personally but a cursory glance shows studies about using milk protein to make polyphenols more bioavailable, like others in the comments mentioned. Even if casein does bind polyphenols, wouldnt it be released again when you digest the casein? And how could dissolving it in water before adding milk prevent it from binding with the casein, which it will have plenty of opportunity to interact with once you add the milk?

    @@fag.destroyer casein is a typical milk protein that our bodies have no problem fully degrading into smaller peptides and amino acids. Your body does not absorb casein protein whole, it must be broken down to be used as a resource by the body. If the casein binds to polyphenols, and then the casein no longer exists, you only need your intuition to understand what would then happen to the previously bound polyphenol. I didn’t use a source for this; if I searched for data what I’d really be looking for is some recognized evidence that milk reduces use effect of antioxidant polyphenols because that sounds like something someone made up. While I admit that I’m just going with my “gut” here, I do have a degree in biochemistry. However I don’t claim to have specific knowledge about this one reaction/bodily process.

    While its true the casein in dairy milk can bind to the polyphenols and theoretically reduce antioxidant absorption, I think it's a bit misleading to say that the average consumer is "missing out on health benefits" by using dairy milk. The primary health benefits tea drinkers recieve from drinking matcha aren't going to be due to antioxidants in the tea (although it probably helps due to the significant amount), but because drinking tea probably displaces the drinking of other less healthy beverages in someone's diet. If someone is super calorie or health conscious, then yea they can omit milk since milk will add some calories or "block" these antioxidants but I would be super worried if they were obsessed about the 100 or so calories adding a cup of milk would add or the antioxidants they would lose out on Based on my skimming of a couple of articles, it also seems that a lot of literature hasn't been able to agree if combining dairy milk with antioxidant rich foods (so tea but including other food/drinks) does limit absorption. I do understand this is a 10 second video, so there's not a whole lot of time to include every single detail, such as the inconclusive opinion about dairy milk and antioxidants. I do like your content, but felt the need to let you know since bioavailability was one of the main points of the video. Unfortunately plant based milks are really not a healthy alternative to milk. Especially if you can tolerate dairy or A2 dairy. If you’re making plant based milks at home you’re avoiding the nasty additives they put into those milks, but your also missing out on all the vitamins they fortify those milks with to make them healthy like calcium, iodine, b-vitamins, vitamin A, phosphorus, and zinc. So you’re left with something low in nutrition and protein and extremely high in oxalates. Oat milk in particular has 4g of oxalates per cup!! Oxalates bind to minerals like calcium and prevent the body from absorbing beneficial nutrients! Oxalates can even cause kidney stones. I would stick to regular milk if you can it’s loaded with vitamins and protein.

    Casein binding to polyphenols...um...where is the research on that?

  • @raerohan4241

    @raerohan4241

    Жыл бұрын

    I looked it up and I found one article from 2013 that said that... but in the same article they also said that the bioavailability of the polyphenols actually increased when they used a different method to test. And I read two more articles from 2021, one that investigated milk casein and whey, and one that investigated those two plus a few more, and both of them claimed that milk proteins increase the bioavailability of polyphenols. Idk if this girl is purposefully spreading misinformation or not, but it's still misinformation nonetheless.

  • @ivanmit3366
    @ivanmit336613 күн бұрын

    The complexation of casein and polyphenols doesn't necessarily mean that the complexes don't break up during digestion. Instead, the complexation can slow down the metabolism of polyphenols, leading to a more sustained release into the bloodstream. This slowed metabolism might have beneficial effects, such as prolonged antioxidant activity and improved bioavailability.

Additionally milk is fortified with vitamin d and in some places it’s the law to fortify vitamin d into it. So just supplement it yourself 🤷‍♀️

    @@Veggiekins I recently learned that fat of any kind is a foam killer. Eg. if you want to make egg foam, the need to sperate the yellow and the white because the yellow part is rich in fat and would destroy the foam. Maybe the fat in the milk is just really bad for matcha foam but, maybe making some foam first with water is more effective?
