AVOID THIS SCAM in BANGKOK
We took a day trip down to the famous Khaosan Road in Bangkok.
Let's just say we got a whole lot more than we had bargained for...
DISCLAIMER:
The purpose of this video is to make other tourists who are new to Thailand aware of this as we certainly weren't when we arrived and almost got caught out ourselves.
Similar scams operates all over the world and this is in no way a reflection of the Thai people. On the contrary, the people of Thailand are some of the kindest, warmest, generous and most hospitable people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with.
Stay safe out there, and as the saying goes, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Peace and love A&Y x

If some people approach you with a map in their hands in Bangkok, 99.99% they would be scammers. They like to approach foreign tourists, especially western/caucasian one. And your look is matching with their target, lol. Thanks for warning this out. As a Thai, we also get scammed too. Not by people with the map, but there are call center scammers calling us from time to time. Hell to all scammers out there!

Advice, Do NOT stop and talk to anyone approaching in the street in Thailand,, once you stop , you are already 50% fallen into their trap
Worst scam is when they tell you the Grand Palace or certain temples are "closed" and they can take you to other temples and usually a store the scammer is connected to via an overpriced tuk tuk.

This is a bit too cynical for my taste. Nice people exist in the world. You just aren't very likely to find them in tourist areas of countries where this kind of thing is common and they are not going to try to sell you things while under time pressure etc.
There is business TukTuk in Thailand here that make a deal with shops to take foreigners to them and the driver get extra money from shops. Normally this not extra charge for the foreigners but it wastes the time so just avoid it
tourists are always easy targets, well done Adam/Yaz for holding your ground, just humour them..

That's painful to watch. Newbies: ANYTIME you are getting time pressure and other kinds of pressure ("but today special day!!") from a tout, it's bad news. Touts in general are bad news. Just say "mai ao khap/ka" and walk away. Does it make sense that they're getting so excited over charging you 20 baht? No it doesn't, obviously. They're getting excited for the kickback money they'll get from the shops they're going to drag you to that you don't want to go to.
I've travelled all around the world. I've always stayed at quality hotels. Pretty nice hotels around $50/night in places like Bangkok, Siem Reap, Beijing and Cairo to name a few. When I wanted go sightseeing with a guide or required transportation I made arrangements through the hotel. I usually paid a little more ($3 to $5) but it was worth not dealing with the hassle and/or getting scammed. It also helps if one becomes familiar with the public transportation system. Trains of Germany, subways of Moscow, and city rail systems of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
As a Thai people. I hate people like this. Sometime I think I want to take tourists to travel by myself. or travel by my own car.

Me and my partner are coming to Thailand in July and we have been looking at finding a local for a 'tour guide' (I use the term loosely as we don't want to be chauffeured around). Essentially someone who is keen for an adventure, who speaks the language. Do you think this is achievable or are we being naive?
If you’re a foreigner, but speak Thai most of them will not scam you, and be impressed that you can speak.

Rule#1 : Say no to Tuk-tuk. Rule#2 : Say no to free gift. Rule#3 : I don't know speak English. These 3 rules save me a lot during the travel. Sorry to those tuk-tuk driver who are sincere and honest, but as a foreigner we just want to have good memories during the travel, not bad memories or even worst was end up in police station to log scammer report or settle the dispute with those "police".

mind you I am not a thai, but I go to bangkok every year , after understanding the dark side, take a detour and find other ways to get around, you will see the more friendly side of the Thai people.....feel for yourself friends and be safe
Bottom line in Thailand is..... if someone tries really hard to sell you something. Dont buy it. Buy things on your terms and dont trust everyone you meet.
All these are scams...basically, they get you into a cheap tuk tuk and take you to a number of shops "for looking". The shops pay the tuk tuk a commission - after 30-40 minutes of being dragged around to places you don't want to go, you finally arrive at your destination. Just get a metered taxi and insist they turn on the meter.
Do not entertain them! If somebody come up from somewhere and talk to you, just smile but don’t talk to them. Once you talk to them they won’t let you go until they get what they want.

When I went to Bangkok, we did ended up in little scams here and there. But yeah, we didn't say much. What's funny is when people see the cameras and they don't mind that they're scamming people. They don't realize they'd be forever on the internet as SCAMMERS. I just hope you didn't experience anything like this in the Philippines as well. Scammers can be everywhere, wherever you go in the world. But thanks for sharing this experience.
You never take TukTuk in Bangkok. They generally charge significantly higher than the taxi and being white does not help just like being Asian in Europe. Notice Thais rarely take Tuktuk? You always do what the locals do in order to get the cheapest price. This includes taking you to massage parlor and silk shops. They are always making commission just like the Las Vegas Taxi driver to take you to places where juices are offered to them. All of them in the world are the same. Use public transportation and you'll be fine. It used to be alot worse when we had to negotiate with the taxi before the meter being installed. We are talking about 30 years ago. I hated Khaosan road since this is where the seediest place in Bangkok with poor tourists. Go to place where wealthier tourist hang out for the best value items. Do the 5 star travel like the Oriental of Bangkok for once in a lifetime experience.
As a Thai i tired of these scammers 😅

Just take it easy dude, don't get too much overthinking, as long as you don't rent staff from undentified locals, don't talk back to strangers who are trying to sell you stuff or anything, just said Mai, you should be fine, actually when first time I come to Thailand I have the same feeling, but after going there several times, I think not too much different from my country, even my country sometimes more dangerous but now it's getting much better. Besides that avoid tour from locals shop, nowdays we have super equipment we always brought along, called smartphone, just reserved tour, taxi, everything from reliable applications, your holiday will be heaven, have try this and believes me it's all better than going out from hotel to local shop for tour just to get chances for you to get scammed.

And you know my plight. They're still doing same trick. LOL. That was my 1st and last holiday being scammed.
Thanks so much for this heads up haha we had the worst experience in Marrakesh. Some guy took us to the smelliest place on earth where they produced leather to be later on dropped off in one of the stores where they sold the finished product. Lesson learned haha I’ll bring my walking shoes
Happened to me today, I was outside the grand palace, I pulled out my map then a guy came up to me acting friendly and asked me where I was from etc, he told me the grand palace was closed and then drew a route on my map of where he could take me in his tuk tuk. I was really annoyed he drew all over my only map.

Negotiate a decent price for a tuk tuk ride once to experience a tuk tuk, then never take one again. They're all rip-offs unless you're with a Thai person who can normally get a good price.
What if i just ignore them even without smiling? Will they call cops or something? I just can't fake smile - I'm a finnish guy.
As a Victorian Gothic, I was confused. Why every time I go to the beach most people always look at me with a strange look? I always wear long black dresses even to the beach, is that wrong? I don't like just wearing a bikini or a swimsuit. Some people ask me "Why are you wearing a long black dress to the beach?" This question is ridiculous to me. Honestly, I like Thai beaches because they are nice and the food there is a lot of good. Overall I like Thailand, but please don't tell me to wear a bikini or swimsuit when I'm at the beach. We also got scammed the same way and ended up paying for an overexpensive trip... We don't know what to do. The tourism police won't help us. If you have any recommendations, please feel free to comment them.
Best avoid is dnt talk to anyone, even he/she looks like tourist, and ask for help, i lost 300 dollars inside 7 eleven store. And they usually follow people from currency exchange points.
sO basically, Thailand is full of scummy scammers? I'm here now for work and regretting coming. If honest. Been scammed in various ways already. One was a local old bloke who i began chatting to while i was cleaning my clothes. Anyway, I nodded at him and smiled as he walked past. then he came and sat and talked. He seemed genuine. Anyway, he said he'd show me around. So the next day he did. Took me to his local area near Khao San road. A little river area with food vendors. Only locals. As we walked there. My phone went missing... I NEVER LOSE ANYTHING. EVER. Anyway i panicked and walked back about 1000 metres to try to retrace my phone. Then i walked back to the guy and he was on his phone saying he rang my phone and a guy had it. And guess what...the guy did. Alarm bells rang in my head but i have benefit of doubt. Anyway, I sat and we spoke and he then asked me to buy the guy who found my phone drinks. Oh I also noticed my bank card was the wrong way in my waller and my ID was the wrong way also... Anyway back to point, i bought him 2 coffees and his friends 2 beers and i had a bottle of water. I then asked for the bill and it came in at 550 bhat. That's when it clicked that i was being scammed. I then got up, paid and told him to not contact me again. Then rang him not long after telling him how bad this looks for thai people. Oh and today my card wouldnt work.... he emptied my account. Luckily i drip money from my paypal into it so i only had a few hundred in (ill get recovered from bank). But it only clicked today when i used my card and it got declined. And I was FUMING. I have the guys number so i might set up a sting with the police to get him arrested and charged. Or I might meet him and give him a jab to the throat. I've not decided yet. I will tomorrow when i am less angry. But so far, I am not a fan of Bangkok at all. The people are scum so far.

Yes, just ignore these guys. Just walk on by. They go to where the first-time and one-time tourists go. Since the Grand Palace is a must-see, they tend to be most numerous there, and the two ends of Khao San Road are also natural spots for them. Bangkok gives Paris a run for the money when it comes to scammers.

Don't make eye contact and just wave them off and keep walking.
Thai are friendly, but when tuk tuk driver are too friendly makes me scare. 😂🤣 The best to travel around Thailand is by public transport or grab taxi. Avoid tuk tuk.

I love Thailand and lived there for about 20 years....running a little beach bar...lived the dream....I was ripped off at least once a week....staff...Police...local council members...etc etc etc....every fuckin scam under the sun......it wore me down so much that I jumped ship.......
You will end up stopping at many tailor shops and jewellery shops and told just to have a look because they get a kickback just by taking you there plus a commission if you buy something.
