I’m a honda tech. The oil dilution in the 1.5t was only an issue in the early models and there has been updates to the tuning. Those engines are pretty reliable I’ve seen them with over 200k miles in Ubers. Biggest problem I’ve seen are injector failures and head gaskets when customers don’t keep the coolant topped off so the car engine overheats. Over all pretty good.

@@lauraandrews8319 There’s been recalls for the HRV transmission due to the belts having excessive wear leading to metal getting into the valve body and ruining the transmission. The recall is just an update to try and prevent the damage but once it’s done it’s done. As for the engine growl and vibrations that’s normal for the 1.8L that comes in the HRV. The 2023 HRV now has the 2.0 that’s been in the civics.

You do have to change oil more frequently with these direct injection engines due to both fuel and incomplete combustion products diluting the oil. I'm doing 5,000 miles tops oil changes. Honda CR-V and GM Chevy Equinox engines are too small to accelerate to highway speed promptly (both 1.5L turbos) - they're working way too hard - underpowered vehicles. Engine pistons stick and burns oil. So I asked him how did it get by the engineers during testing? He said ohh they knew it, but they are rushed by the manufacturer to complete testing so they can get a vehicle on the market, unless it's a safety issue they don't care

Thanks for sharing! Very helpful! One thing I want to point out is stay away from any vehicle equipped with a turbocharger. The reason is they can get pretty pricey to replace. I have to admit yes they add some pep to the step but they shorten the life span of an engine. I’ve never owned anything equipped with a turbo . Don’t need it . Just added expense. I don’t care for GDI either . The main reason is because of the carbon buildup. If I was going to purchase a vehicle I know to Avoid any thing with GDI & turbocharged.

Well, during that cold snap last month, in the Jeep Wrangler world (3.6 Pentastar) it was dubbed “The Great Crackening”, as many of us had issues with our (plastic) oil cooler assemblies failing, resulting in the “V” in the motor pooling with oil, and oil leaking, which is a major fire hazard for the vehicle. A fix that many do themselves, some choose to replace with the all aluminum Dorman part, costing $250, and about 4-6 hours labor, or $900 to have replaced by a mechanic. My 2016 JKU had that fail AND the main seal, which luckily was still under warranty, would have cost me $2200 if not.

The 2.0T style hasn't really been around long enough, imho in widespread use as it is today, for accurate evaluation across all brands. 20 years ago a 2.0T four was almost always seen only in a JDM sports coupe. Basic cars had an NA 2.0 four, mid grade was a 3.0 V6 or I6, and trucks or large cars had a NA 4.0/5.0 V8. That was 90% of the engines on the market. A turbo four or six was guaranteed to be only seen in a JDM sports car. I've heard that 2.0T's don't last but I've yet to really be convinced that is true; however I will not argue that a NA V6/I6 or V8 in my experience will have the longest service life.

@@Cruiser777 that's such a shame. It's funny how some of the 2.0 litres are so good and others so bad. My 2015 Elantra (GLS) I drove so hard sometimes, redlining the engine and loving the acceleration for such a small engine and it probably ran better the day I traded it in on the Tucson than the day I picked it up new. I don't know if this had anything to do with it but after the first tank of gas from the dealership was gone I used nothing but premium fuel, because I could feel the difference in how it ran and the performance difference was noticeable.

We have 90k on 12 optima SX 2.0 turbo, And the dealer is actually looked at the engine a couple times due to recalls and they extended the warranty cuz of all the engines blowing up but ours has been good I do keep up on the maintenance and use the Kia oil filters and synthetic oil.

I listened to this video with great interest and imagine my surprise when you completely skipped over another SUV that will cost you $7000+ for a remanufactured engine after anywhere from 70,000 to 150,000 miles. If you guessed the Cheverolet Equinox with the 1.4 litre engine, you are completely correct (the 4 cylinder, not the six). Cheverolet has had problems with this engine since the day it came off the assembly line; they knew about the problem, never fixed it and have kept manufacturing the engine with absolutely zero changes to it's manufacturing processes. In fact; if you look at the life expectancy of this engine; it is shown by Cheverolet to only be 150,000 mile life expectancy even with promptu oil changes. This engine has been known to eat oil as soon as you leave the showroom floor with it brand spanking new. It has timing chain issues. It constantly throws check engine lights for oxygen sensors (you will go broke replacing those). I have had four different converters on my 2011 Equinox in less than a year. Had the engine replaced on it at 125,000 miles (bought it used, replaced the engine less than four months after I bought it); needed the engine replaced again 8 months after that (told the dealer to keep the damn thing; wasn't going to sink another $7,000 into it for another rebuilt motor). Between the two engines; had the timing chain replaced twice, timing chain tensioner replaced. All around bad car to purchase; will nickel and dime you to death.

Add the Ford Explorer with the standard 3.5L V6 to the list. Ford had the bright idea to put the water pump inside the engine. So, if the water pump starts leaking, one has to tear down much of the engine to get to it. We just paid $2000 to replace a leaky water pump on our 2014 Explorer with 108,000 miles on it. The engine has been OK otherwise.

Stopped at Kia a couple of weeks ago and test drove a Seltos. Good to know about the 2.0 is the 1.6 turbo more reliable? Also, the air conditioning lines ran right in front of the belts which makes access to many of the accessories problematic. Like the look like the soft ride like the automatic transmission, but everything else is a pass.

Regarding the Honda 1.5L CRV oil dilution issue. That’s been solved. Use 0w-16 GF-6 oil. Scotty had a viewer use this on his recommendation and after 5000 miles he sent his oil in for analysis. No fuel in the oil. I’ve personally been using this for 4 oil changes and have had no issues.

I don’t think so. If you drive short trips in the winter weather, that’s when fuel dilution occurs. If he did this in the summer or drove long enough in the winter the fuel will evaporate out.

And by the way the owner of this vehicle has 100,000 miles on it, he had the lab report from when he was using the 0w-20 that showed fuel in the oil. He also had the follow up lab report after he had been using the 0w-16. No fuel in the oil.

Hi Marc, i recently bought a 2023 Hyundai Tuscon SEL AWD with the convenience package, if i turn into a 'rotisserie chicken' i will let you know. Yes i see the engine fires are a FACT in some vehicles however i had 7 Hyundai's and NEVER an issue with anything except normal maintenance. You know i am wondering with the MASSIVE fuel pressure of the GDI i am pondering if its possibly bad fuel line issues causing leaks?

  • @mikefoehr235

Watch Scotty Kilmer. The hi pressure of the injector is so hi that the rings cannot resist fuel getting . So, you end up with gas in the oil. Also, with port injection, gas Isa great solvent and washes away carbon. The best choice is Toyota because they use dual injection and the ECM will switch to port injection now.and then to clean away carbon. Toyota engineers are no fools. Toyota has issues to but seems like way less than many others. I am now on my 4th Toyota...very well made overall.
