Avoid These 6 Common Shrimp Keeping Mistakes!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, I open up about my experiences in keeping shrimp over the past two years and share 6 shrimp keeping mistakes I made along the way. My goal is to help you avoid these pitfalls and provide better care for your shrimp. I'll cover six key blunders I've encountered.
Inadequate Acclimation: Discover the importance of properly acclimating your new shrimp to their environment. I used to treat them like fish but learned the benefits of a slower drip acclimation method.
Aquascaping After Shrimp Placement: Shrimp prefer stability, so avoid making significant changes to your tank once they're in. Plan your aquascaping beforehand to reduce stress.
Mixing Shrimp with Aggressive Fish: I made the mistake of housing my Betta with shrimp, only to discover the Betta's aggressive nature. Learn the importance of understanding your fish's behavior before introducing them to your shrimp.
Adding Shrimp to Newly Established Tanks: Patience is crucial. I rushed to introduce shrimp to newly built tanks, which could have led to potential ammonia and nitrite spikes. Wait at least two weeks to ensure tank stability.
Large Water Changes and Tap Water: Shrimp are sensitive to big water changes and tap water variations. Limit water changes to 10-20%, and treat tap water with a dechlorinator, matching temperature before use.
Medicating Fish in Shrimp Tanks: Treating sick fish in a shared tank can have adverse effects on shrimp. I learned the hard way and recommend using a quarantine tank for medicating ill fish.
Remember, mistakes happen, but they can also be valuable learning opportunities. Use these experiences to improve your shrimp-keeping skills and provide the best care for your aquatic friends. Shrimp keeping is a rewarding hobby that can bring you joy and satisfaction.

    Vid creator agrees: Patience is KEY in all aquarium endeavors! After each water change, refill the reservoir and allow the chlorine to evaporate a long time (couple days). Use a tiny air hose as the siphon, so your water change takes a while.

    I love this comment. I also use a tiny hose when re-filling the tank. It takes time but it gives me time to do additional maintenance. But, you do have to keep an eye on it as it's very easy to forget about since it takes a while to fill and there have been two occasions where I got distracted and the tank started to overflow.

    Adding a diferent coment because its about the Ick medication ! I also had to add ick medication to my tank, and just before i put it in i read that some ick medication, mine included is NOT invertebrate safe ! I have them im my nano tank for now, the only way to put them back in, is after multiple water changes and using active corbon media to filter all the medication out!

    Technical question - Im keeping cherry red shrimp in my current tank , can I add other shrimp like red fire shrimp or blue shrimp or yellow shrimp ?

  • @shrimplycanadian

    @shrimplycanadian

    7 ай бұрын

    Yes you can. Basically you'll be creating a Skittle tank. One thing to note that if you're focusing on breeding shrimp, it's best to only keep the same colour together. With this setup, down the line, the new baby shrimp will eventually revert to their wild colour of brownish tone. This will take a long time before this happens.

    Shrimp keeping is a weird combination of bulletproof animals that will happily live and breed in a bucket of mud for years but can die if you look at them funny. I regularly do 50% water changes, straight out of the tap with few degree C fluctuations on a large red cherry tank and the shrimp in that tank are in their thousands without any issues what so ever. I have another smaller tank of tang tigers that I am a lot more careful with and that suffers population crashes every six months or so and I still have no idea why. The mistake I regret is not appreciating that lots of very informed, smart people put out a lot of great information but at the end of the day, their water will be different to mine and knowing my water conditions is the most important thing. Even in the same city, water can be hard in some suburbs and soft in others. Some people have perfect taiwan bee water straight out of their taps, others have perfect neo water straight out of their taps (I have perfect neo water thankfully) and each person needs to know what water they are putting in their tanks. Intitially I tried to follow advice that worked for other people but was bad advice for my specific situation (such as adding crushed coral when the water is already hard enough).

    I recently watched a video on a shrimp keeper in Singapore who mentioned that if he noticed one or two Caridina shrimp die in his tanks, he would do a water change but also it would be time to restart his tank as he uses under gravel filters. Not sure if any of this info is useful in regards to your population crash.

    Straight out of the tap is not smart at all.... how COULD you? There's chlorine. At least fill the bucket a couple days ahead so it evaporates.

    @@shrimplycanadian I think I know the video - Shrimp Mania? ;) Most tigers are supposedly to be kept identical to neos and in one of my tanks, I do have a ton of black roses and tiger hybrids both doing well (too bad the hybrids - hybrid of tang tigers and some other unknown caridina - are drab in colour) but in a tank with just tang tigers, they would be doing great until I realise I haven't seen any more babies in a while then the adults start to die and the damage is done. I have recently put a new batch of tang tigers in with my thriving blue dreams and will keep a close eye on how they all go together.

    any advice on buying shrimp online? I looked everywhere locally for blue dream and finally ordered some online and it was scary trying to decide who/where to trust! I'm still nervous they'll arrive dead or microscopic in size!

    I've never bought any shrimp online as I have a few local fish stores around me that stock the various types. I also believe in parts of Canada, most stores don't ship livestock anymore. I wish I could be of more help on this topic.

    Could you recomend a good air tube for this ? I dont have any air tubbing so what i do is usualy drop a bit of water at a time But i would much rather buy an air tubbing tie a knot and relax

  • @shrimplycanadian

    @shrimplycanadian

    7 ай бұрын

    I usually use the soft silicon air tubing. If you see my Amazon affiliate link, you will see the tubing I use plus the little tap connectors you can connect two tubes together to control the water flow. This way you don't need to tie a knot. amzn.to/49kAFJ5

    How do you get your tap water to match the temps of your tank when doing water changes?

  • @shrimplycanadian

    @shrimplycanadian

    4 ай бұрын

    It's hard because the most you can do is get it as close as possible. In the past I would place one of those mini digital thermometers but now I store dechlorinated tap water in a big plastic bin which is heated to the temperature of my tanks. It also has an air stone in there to help with gas exchange. Once I fill this bin, I leave it for 3 days or more (ensuring its dechlorinated), then I fill my tanks from there and this allows me to actually do larger water changes if needed since all the water parameters match what I have in my tank.
