SPOT ON advice on #1 - above all else! I see so much advice online that just makes me roll my eyes hard enough to see my brain. LOL What's MOST ridiculous is when the people dishing out the erroneous advice have less actual experience than you do, especially when it's LOTS less. I've definitely done things I was told "You can't do that" and it worked out great. I've also done things "perfectly" per the dogmatic folks and had nothing but disaster. Now, I just look to nature and move forward and disregard any online advice that doesn't fit nature.

Dude, I just found your channel and I love your approach! I just wanted to start a small tank with live plants, as many as I could put in there, then I got a few pigmy corys, then I got green algae on all the leaves so I though, I'll try Cherry shrimp. They knocked out that algae in 4 days! And I really didn't think I'd like shrimp. now I'm obsessed with the little guys. they are, like you said, so interesting to watch! I'm actually spending too much time in front of my shrimp tank. LoL. So anyway, thanks for this great info. you're a joy to listen too. Thanks!

I figured out why my shrimp were not successful - I tested my tap water and it's shows 3.0ppm ammonia. That's because it's treated with chloramine and the Nutrafin dechlorinator I was using only breaks the bond between chlorine and ammonia - It doesn't instantly detoxify the ammonia and ammonium left in the tank. The filtration system and filter media were forced to deal with it. My water dosed with nutrafin shows 3.0 ammonia My water dosed with SAFE and tested immediately shows 0! Lesson learned here is to get PRIME or SAFE because it truly works.

Great set of tips! I really like what you chose to open with, your tip #1. I am happy to offer people advice but your tip #1 is important. I particularly like tip #5 as well. One of the things I advise people who want to keep shrimp, "the 3 absolutely essential things you need to start are a tank, water and patience". I need to follow tip #7 more. Lately I have been spending a lot of time planning an expansion to my shrimp racks and can overlook enjoying what I currently have.

Hi. Thank you for your kind words. 🫶🏻 I currently keep 3 Pea Puffers in a 7 gallon. 7 gallon is a little small for 3, but I believe they get on fine thanks to the mass of live plants, meaning they can each pick out a territory and leave one another alone. Personally, I wouldn’t add another species with Pea Puffers in such a small tank.

I have a 250 litre tank with cherry shrimp and 6x danios, I've got to the point where I've given up on shrimp keeping, cost too much to buy, the plants die off quick because you can't use fertilisers in the tank due to copper in them, I find the slightest change in water. I change the foods everyday, only do 5 - 10% water changes every 2 weeks (which is hard water/tap water), keep checking my water parameters every other day, give them calcium blocks etc etc. I give up with shrimp now. I had a lot better luck and success with amano shrimp weirdly but shrimp over all are way overpriced in the uk!

Unfortunately, yes! That’s how it starts, then before you know it you are dedicating an entire room in your house to them 🤣😂🤣

@@FishKeepingAnswers oh no, not sure I have enough space in our house lol maybe couple of 2 gals would work? 😂 Need to get wife's permission first though hahahah do you think if I start with skittles I can keep the colors by culling? I have a 29 gal and can put all odd colored offsprings on there as needed, I guess it will be an experiment. Have you tried that method or have experience on that before?

So essentially, if you cull any shrimp that do not show the desired colours, you can end up with an amazing skittles tank, and a tank of slightly less colourful, but still active and interesting shrimp. It just take effort and patience. I still cringe slightly when I bring a new tank into the house as I can picture my wife’s face when she sees it 🤣🤣🤣

Sometimes, stores sell poor quality ‘feeder shrimp’ as ghost shrimp. They are typically very weak. Have you tried a small group of Red Cherry Shrimp? 🦐
