Avoid the Hoya Kerri Plant single leaf Valentines day GIMMICK

Hi Guys :-D this is a video to warn all you plant lovers from buying a one leaved Hoya kerri plant commonly sold at this time of year, these single leaf cuttings are sold as a gimmick for Valentines day and only 10% of them survive long term to form into a mature plant.

I bought one of these single leaf cuttings from a charity shop for £1 that the lady had rooted herself from her own plant. 9 months on I have 14 leaves and it’s 16 inches tall!! So DONT be put off by someone else’s lack of success. This is the second one I’ve had, first one I had from Ikea and that grew nicely too so I gave it to my sister.

I bought two single leaf plants 5-6 years ago, maybe longer, and they have remained the same, no growth, no flowers, until two weeks ago when I hadn’t watered them for a while and one seemed papery so I put them both in water for a while then let them drain, now, one of them has grown another leaf😃. I was going to remove it and pot it as I thought that was how they were meant to be but thought I’d look online first, thank goodness I did. Repotting is all that is going to happen now for both plants 💚💚

Most of them one leaf cuttings come from the nursery with some 'cloth thingy' around the base of the leaf...around the roots. In my experience its worth taking the leaf out of the soil washing and removing the cloth and then repoting in perlite or sucullant soil. Good luck everyone!

Thanks for posting this. I'm an amateur indoor gardener in NYC & grow multiple Hoyas, including H kerrii, the Heart-shaped Hoya leaf. We see this scam from time to time as well. A number of yrs. ago, I persuaded my own local supermarket (in Brooklyn) to quit selling these, maybe 8-10 yrs. ago, for $12 a pop, not a cheap loss. They probably had 6 or 8 for sale when I stopped them.

Totally agree with you Lyn, all plant lovers should avoid plant exploitations such as this unrooted leaves, or dyed, glittered, snow covered plants, just for the fun of holidays and other symbolic days. Plants are real, living organisms, and should be treated with respect. They give us so much. If only people who sell plants could stop coming up with these horrid and kitch ideas. We should boycott all of these.

Hi Lyn, I had this plant from Ikea, ant it sadly died after a year or so without any growth signs but it had roots. Once I took it out of pot I found out that its base (roots) were inserted in to an incredibly hard coconut fiber plug and I think that that was the main reason of the plant not being able to grow normally. So i’d suggest you to check your plant, whether it has the same hard plug around it. Anyway, goodluck and happy growing! :]

Two died and one has continued being green despite having been pulled out of the pot it was pretty much glued into and tossed aside to be thrown out. But yesterday I discovered it was still hanging on, so I've brought it inside, put it in a jar of water, and will see what happens. Thanks for the info in your video!

I think nurseries have changed to coconut husk fiber to make sure people can't over water them as easy. Hoya like being drenched and then dried out, they fare better in smaller pots that dry out faster. as they don't have huge root balls I hear most don't rely on roots when established. Also I just watched a video that says it's because if you do not have stem or petiole attached it's won't start any vine. The rooting hormone just roots the leaf and not the stem.

There are lots of Hoya care videos on KZread. They don'e need too much water and not too much sun. I grow lots from cuttings because my old ones sometimes die back in our climate. My suggestion would be to keep the heart for as long as possible and then lay it on its side and keep fairly dry. It should grow. If it takes off put it in a hanging basket grow in succulent and cactus potting mix. I'm going to buy a heart now and see what happens!!! Many other plants you buy have been feed hormones and fertilisers I always say they are on steroids!!!

My local flower shop was selling these around Valentine Day for something like $17!! I refused to shell out that kind of cash. Needless to say they didn't go. So i waited for them to be marked down, which they did. Eventually after about two months they had one left, sadly neglected and sitting there for about $4. I told the clerk I'd take it and try to save it if they'd sell if for a buck. I *think* it's gotten slightly bigger. It's definitely perked up, anyway. We'll see what happens. I can't believe they try to sell these things to desperate men for such a gouge.
