    PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING: Yes I know I swear a lot in the video, it makes me cringe too, I don't swear anymore in my newer vids. And second, the reason why I wasn't able to go a million miles an hour in the fast lane is because I had a CAR in FRONT of me. I am not going to tailgate a car, I wouldn't want to get brake checked on the highway that's dangerous!

    Buying a used bike can be tricky. Some high mileage bikes are well maintained. And some low mileage bikes might've been thrashed. It's a roll of the dice in a lot of cases.

    Im new to bikes and i was wondering if i was to get a 4 stroke 125cc (yamaha yzf r125) that has obviously been thrashed around just to sit at 70 mph (speed limit in the UK) would 20k plus miles be bad to buy or not. Thanks in advance

    20,000 miles is about the half life of a 125 and learner bikes twnd to be abused because guys don't know what they're doing I'd say go check it out roll the thing down the road and see if you hear anything from the brakes or wheel bearings look at the chain adjuster and see how many times it's been adjusted check the adjustment. check the oil level is alright and then if you can get a decent price go for it. depends how mechanically sound you are how much money you have and how much experience you have if it's your first 125 i think the yzfr is a expensive first 125 when you consider most people smash their first bike up

    jousey junior my current bike has 71k almost 72k kms ran, i got it when it was at 64k (around 40k miles) i had to fix a couple of things but at least the bike responded well to every maintenance, it's like they only gave her gas and key... I got it for less than half of the price of a new bike, so i had some money for maintenance without raising the final price of the bike too high. Tho I'm pretty sure that if i would have bought it new, it would have been at a much better condition to what i found her at.

    Here's a tip that has never failed me: The speedometer can lie, but the oil sight glass does not. If it's nice and clear, that engine has always had good, clean oil in it. And that makes engines last way longer. The rest of the bike is harder to judge, need to look at the rubber parts, moving parts, etc to get a feel. But the engine is the most expensive thing to fix, so this helps you avoid buying a lemon.

    Depends on how the miles were accumulated. I bought my CBR600R brand new (with one mile on it) six months ago and have already racked up 12k miles. However it has been meticulously maintained, and achieved the majority of those miles commuting to work. Many bikes if maintained can easily last 100k miles.

    I bought a used CBR1100XX Blackbird with high milage on it, and believe me it was very well maintained, it looked out of the showroom, had a clean full maintenance record by Honda dealer, any 1000+ cc engine is bullet proof, usually bought from experienced riders who know their stuff, it's been two years since I bought it and never had an issue with it so far.

    I think it depends on how it's been treated/looked after. My Daytona (2014) has 25,000 miles on it and hasn't skipped a beat, service her in between dealer services and keep her clean. I'll end up selling it for cheap by the time she hits 50,000 and someone will get a deal, but you'll find the other guy selling one that didn't get serviced regularly and abused and someone will get stitched up!

  • @curvecrazy

    Hell no. For an R1 with that high of mileage you’d have to be crazy. My 01 FZ1 has 105K on her now and yeah she still runs but not like she did 90K miles ago. Oil and filter has always been changed. The rest maintained but stuff wears. Look carefully at the EXUP valve in the exhaust on that 60K R1. Mine still runs decently but it burns oil noticeably and power is down. An 02 R1 in mint shape with 17-24K miles should sell for no more than $3K as they hav3 been doing the past two years and be careful also with the transmissions as second gears are a real problem on the original 1998 versions carrying all the way through 2003 as well also being a potential problem model. At $3K you should expect good chain and sprockets (newer) and good tires as well you can easily drop $600 right there if you replace those yourself, ge5 a shop involved and ching$$$$$

  • @curvecrazy

    @curvecrazy

    6 жыл бұрын

    02 GSXR1K were solid bikes if cared for. Mine went over 100K same as my current FZ1. It burned some oil too. Tranny’s could get sloppy with clutchless shifting, my friends got bad. To spend tha5 k8nd of cash on that I’d have to want it and it would have to be mint (RARE Now) and good chain and tires as mentioned. You can use NADA bike or Kelly Blue Book but don’t pay more than low listed retail to a private seller those are dealer prices with showrooms and business costs figured into the listed prices. It’s pretty hard at this point in time 16 years later to find nice clean examples of these bruisers and look carefully for previous crash damage and clutches are often knackered by idiots too. $$$. An R1 with those miles I wouldn’t touch it above $2K. If it had 30K like the GSXR then maybe $3K if mint and I wanted it. Generally, the best deals on bikes lately are later year ones (more recent) in a little higher price range say $5-6K. Just my opinion ask prices on used bikes have gotten ridiculous and sellers routinely lie about condition wasting endless of your precious time.

    I put about 10-15k miles a year on my bikes. I've gotten used to my CBR600RR it's quite comfortable for long distance rides. Main thing to look for when it's a high mileage bike is look at the rear sprocket and chain. If it's messed up that means the owner didn't take care of it and avoid at all costs.

    My YZF 600R had 36,000 miles when I bought it; and I live in NYC so that's city miles, stop and go, heavy shifting. I honestly find that the engines tend to be absolutely fine as long as the bike isn't literally abused. However i feel that the transmission is where the bike tends to get a little less smooth and show wear/mileage much more.

    I just got back from a 1500 mile trip a few hours ago on my 2000 YZF600R! I hit 53,000 miles in the middle of Nevada. Bike ran all day long at 7-8k RPM, used no oil, temps were low, and it returned 47 mpg at 80 mph. It's my daily rider out here in Cali (I've had it for two years and I've put about 26,000 on it). Utterly perfect. Love the Thundercat! Also, I second (hehe) what has been said about second gear. Be sure to REALLY plant the shifter up (I even hold the shifter up if I'm revving it out in 2nd) to avoid a half-shift and then the gears popping out (which damages the dogs), and the tranny will hold up just fine!

    My FZR250R is a 1990 and had about 24,000kms on it when I bought it about 3 years ago. I've properly maintained it, oil and filter changes every 5,000km, cleaned the carbs and replaced seals etc and it runs just as well, if not better than when I first got it. It now has 61,000kms on it. At around 56,000km, I had to replace the cam cover gasket and checked the cam chain tension and valve clearances while I was in there. Chain was sitting perfectly on the cam gears and all the valves were in spec apart from one which was just a fraction too tight. Considering the red line is 18,500rpm and I ride it almost every day, it really goes to show that proper maintenance really goes a long way.

    Oh! Thanks for sharing. How about the hundreds of examples of improper or no oil changes? Inept shifting which only worsens damage as mileage increases? I don’t think there’s too much argument that an engine, properly maintained and operated prudently, will provide a long service life. The problem is - obviously - ascertaining that. And how can you or anyone else effectively do that? I don’t think yours is sound advice as you seem to be generalizing what can not be generalized. But.... good luck with that as it’s your cash!

    With a bike that has high miles it's important to remember the little things that nobody thinks about to maintain. wheel bearings, brake fluid, rotors, chain and sprockets, suspension rebuild, suspension linkage bearings, swing arm bearings, head bearings. The list of little things can go on for days. It's important to never forget these little things when looking into a bike with high miles.

Check forks so they dont leak, chain condition tells a big story, and overal cleanliness and oil color thru window, check oil filter condition if its new. Stuff like that, obviously a test ride.

I do not get how so many people have all these bikes and DON'T RIDE THEM! FYI I go long distances on my sport bike.. I actually think sport bikes are amazing for the road in all forms. Sadly though I'm looking at naked because I'm sick of getting stereotyped by police and the public. I don't ride like an asshat but you get treated like it no matter what on a sportbike most of the time. I'll never ride without a helmet cam. Many aspects to many different bikes. Had 91,000 when I bought it for $400, points and fresh gas had it running in an afternoon. 12 years later sold the bike for $1000 and the odometer read 74,000 lol... Ran like a top! I bought my R6 new from the dealer in 2012, and now have 67000kms (41600mi) the engine pulls as strongly as the day I bought it. I had to adjust 2 valves this year, kept up on maintenance and plan on doing brakes, clutch and forks this year. I've done a good bit of hard riding as well as a lot of dirt roads. These new bike are reliable. I don't like Ducatis either, at 67000 I would expect one to be on the bench as much as my RZ500.

    Chances are it might be. It's not only the power, but the whole bike itself is constructed to appeal to a different demographic. The commands of the clutch, the brakes and ultimately the engine of a supersport leave little to no tolerance to oblivious mistakes begginers make. So my 2 1/2 cents: Stay within 250-650cc margin with a maximum of 2 cylinders and I belive your learning experience will be way more comfortable. have a good one : )

  • @stahlino

    Totally agree! More miles, less owners is a good-to-buy feature! Continue to maintain and service your bike and it gets you from 50kkm to 500kkm any way further than most people expect. Most (definetely not all) modern bikes and cars (80's onwards) are very reliable and more or less safe to drive. Don't drive them with broken or worn parts which usually cause a chain reaction of other problems or negative effects on other part's lifespans. Warm up the engines before you start to race and service the bike yourself by manufacturer's time and/or mileage recommendations. As long as you don't crash it yourself or let other people crash it, you can drive it as long as you like it or governments allows you to do.

    I have a GSX-R750 2007 model that has about 85,000 miles and it doesn't use a drop of oil between oil changes. Has been changed regular every 3,500 miles. The valve clearances were still in spec at valve check interval. A couple were at the extreme limit. So I did them anyway. Checked them about 40,000 miles later and they virtually hadn't changed. I use Chevron (Caltex) Vortex 98 (95 US) and it cleaned the intake valve deposits off to where they look like new. It's the only fuel to use for engine cleaning because it has PEA or Techron.

You need to buy a tool to compress the valve springs. And lastly, you need to buy a new head gasket half the time because the gasket will tear.

    Great video man. I tell folks all of the time that bikes have low miles because people don't ride them. I've got a Kawasaki ZX-10R with over 20,000 miles and it runs great. Every time I think about selling it, I balk. I've got a Honda 919 too and those engines are known to get as much as 300,000 miles on them from theold CBR 900RRs.

    Yeah even it's immaculate and had regular professional servicing you'll still struggle to get anything more than a decent condition bike with a similar mileage, unless of course the bike has collector appeal.

    I had an '03 SV650 approaching 130,000 miles on it. Bone stock, except for the K&N air filter, radiator guard, and frame sliders. The thing was still tight after all those years! No weird engine noises or oil leaks. Most modern bikes (anything past 1985 or later) should be good for a 100K easy.

    maybe it's the camera perspective, but it looks like you're a long ass way away from them... every other car on the road looks to be two or three times closer in following distance... and just cuz the guy in front of you is parked in the fast lane doesn't mean you need to do the same.

  • @HeroRR

    @HeroRR

    It's the camera. Look at the lines in the road, I am doing a 1 second following distance. That is more than sufficient.

    Well the problem is that the car in the front thinks you are behind him and drive the same speed as im, so he thinks he doesnt have to get on the right lane. If you go right he sees the faster car and maybe goes right too. Also I dont know about your country but where i live there is a Right lane law. It means you have to drive right unless your overtaking or if the road is full.

    Great video, great topic. My bike is a 23 year old CBR1000F and has done 42,000+ kms. I have just come back from a 1,777km ride around New Zealands East Coast (camera running the whole way, check it out...) The ride before that was 2047kms to Cape Reinga in the Far North. Bike is fully serviced and maintained and is ready for years of open road running. Nive video thank you

    i've put 12k on a grom in about 12months of actual riding in the midwest. i do feel like what qualifies as "high mileage" somewhat depends on location also. here in the midwest our bikes typically sit inside for 5 or 6 months depending on how late into november someone will ride and how early in march/april they get it back out. so the time window for putting on those miles is quite a bit less than someone with a bike in southern california.

    Hello there. My cbr 600f4 '00 (not the i so carburators) just turned 90k kilometers 55923 miles. Not a single problem so far. Not a _single_ problem. Just like you said, not the miles, but the maintenance. When I bought her two years ago, it had roughly 44k miles on it so I've had 11k semi pleasant miles on it. Semi because after 3 hours of riding straight, I am a cripple. Litterally. My knees and legs are killing me. Love the bike though an gonna keep riding it untill it brakes down totally.. so looking up for a few good years on this one :) Keep strong, ride safe.
