This is spot on. I usually use only a carry on and a personal tote. I just changed my tote to a vertical (backpack) because it was awkward to push down the airplane aisle. I am not a backpack person, only got it for this purpose and incase I'm in a subway station without an elevator. I put a change of clothing compression bag on the bottom of my tote and leave enough space to add my crossbody on the top, just before boarding. I don't even need to close the top, just to board the plane. I once was stopped as I was boarding, because they saw the crossbody as a third bag. She wasn't nice about it either, I was embarrassed.

Just returned from an 8 day trip to Germany and found I could easily get by with carry-on only, even with winter gear. Most outer clothing could be worn at least 3 days - especially if you layer. Packable day packs are an essential for me. Thanks for your practical tips and sharing.

For carry-on luggage, i recommend picking the lightest one which gives you enough strength for your needs. Because of ghe weight limits, you dont want the empty luggage to use up some of the weight. Also helps you to lift it up in the plane. Especially if you arent a young, strong person.

I used your tips to go on a 3 week European vacation this fall. My husband was doubtful initially but was so grateful when we had numerous flight delays and didn't have to wait for, or deal with delayed/lost luggage.

My wife introduced me to one bag travel and it really opened my eyes to minimal travel. We went to Europe for 3 weeks and I brought one medium size backpack. Wheeled luggage does not fare well on cobblestone streets and alleys. Also I would go to a thrift store and get a wardrobe for the trip, this allows me to pack light and the bag gets lighter as I go. Usually can get a complete wardrobe for about $50. Rather than laundry I simply discard items along the trip saving one good one for the trip home. I probably look like a tourist but that is what I am. Also there are retail and second hand stores in almost every city if you really need another item. Every hotel has soap and shampoo so carrying those things is not necessary.

I do a similar thing. For the trip over the pond to Europe, I look through my shirt collection and wear one that is old or unworn for a few years and just leave it in the room on the morning of day three of the trip. I also take underwear and socks that are on their last legs and toss them as well.

Be careful with small crossover bags. Spirit air wanted to count my 4x6 thin crossover as my one free personal item. I got out of line, switched it to hang in the back and put my coat back on. They couldn’t see it so they didn’t count it as a bag.

  • @Joe-lb8qn

Couldn't agree more about the freedom aspect, for me its not about the money, I'm forgoing free bags on my flights, its about ease at departure airport (usually no need to go to check in desks just straight to security) and at arrival airport (as you say, walk off and away ) plus no vague feelings of disquiet regarding whether your bags made the connecting flight(s) or even just that single flight when you are one of the last at the carousel and your luggage has not appeared yet. Later this year i'm flying into LA then 2hrs then Chicago then 2 hrs then London. Just walk from one flight and terminal to another and know all my stuff is with me and when i get off in London no waiting for an hour or more (its happened) at the carousel. Just leave. ETA for most places most people go, if you didn't have something that you didn't pack and find you need it, a credit card works as a substitute, just buy it at destination. Hardly even happens. In the past I bet Ive taken 100 things i didn't need for every one thing i didn't pack that i did.

Not much I can add to this. On my last overseas trip to France for 3 weeks, I opted for the all carry on strategy, and it worked well. Carry-on suitcase for most stuff, and a backpack for my personal item. The backpack selection proved tough. I opted to buy the Cotopaxi Allpa 28 to maximize cubic space. It is slightly longer than to fit under the seat. I spoke with the fight attendant and she said that most people check large bags so there would probably be enough room to store it overhead, which there was. The best decision I made was with regard to shoes. I opted to take a decent pair of walking shoes that could double for nicer dining and my Teva sandals. I practically lived in the sandals and they have the added benefit of reducing the number of socks to pack. I'd love to see your tips for winter packing with all carry ons as this would be more difficult with bulkier clothing.

After going to Amsterdam in March weather, when I realized people that live in Amsterdam are wearing nothing but jeans and a black jacket with a backpack… And they’re all bundled up with hats and scarves and gloves… There’s no reason to overpack when all people see is your jacket and pants. Being a woman, the majority of what I have to take with me is really my tech gear and make up and my very specific type of hairdryer. Now that I’m gonna be going to London in March, I am going to do a carry-on, and of course the largest personal item that I can take ! I’m trying to find the best pair of shoes that I know are comfortable, will keep me warm, and go with everything . But I’m pretty much keeping a very minimalist dressing vibe = all black / mostly black LOL😁

We were in Europe last year for three months. June to September. We only had carry on 8kg and a personal bag that fit under the seats. I had 4 dresses, leggings and a hiking skirt, sandals and hiking boots. My husband had 3 pairs of shorts, 5 Tshirts, sandals, hiking boots and sneakers. Plus undies. We are in our late sixties. We found that it was more than enough, though every time my daughter saw the photos, she asked if I could change my wardrobe. 😂 we also had two travel mugs and a flask.

We had bought nice hard-sided carry-ones for a trip we have coming up that were the standard 22x14x9 size and relatively light at 7 pounds. Then I checked the SAS website and discovered their carry-on size limits are a little smaller than that AND have a 8 kg weight limit. I went on a mad search and finally found a company based in Australia called July that meets the size requirements and weighs in at 4.9 pounds, leaving me almost 13 pounds for clothes. We also had to get smaller personal item backpacks because those have size (but not weight) limits, and well put our heaviest stuff in their. I’m actually looking forward to the challenge of packing minimally enough to just use the carry-ones even with those size and weight restrictions.

Add high quality disposable razor, kids toothbrush, casual shorts / pants, polo shirt + sock with slip on shoes. I have work & leisure for lounging around the hotel room but for leisure. I get off the flight & go straight to work so losing a bag or waiting for luggage to arrive.

Me too. And honestly if you buy at the destination even traveling domestically, it’s more expensive than if you brought the item from home. I can’t use hotel toiletries for my hair and skin type. When I studied abroad 24 years ago, stores didn’t carry what I needed and my mom had to send some of it and some I had to buy off Amazon. If you need medication, specific products, etc., you need to check a bag because I carry on my meds and you can get arrested in any airport anywhere in the world by not having meds in original bottles. It’s irresponsible to encourage people to do otherwise. You can still pack minimally, bring what you need, and check a bag. I don’t like lugging around all the bags for connections plus others are so rude and use chairs for their carryons at gates and take up space. Some fares don’t even allow carry-ons.

I am sorry the last plane I took that sold economy light tickets, all those people with Carry On delayed our flight for over 30 min with bags that did not fit in the overhead bins, nor under their seats. The flight attendants spent 30 min dragging out oversized bags in the seat in front of them and getting them checked. On this airline Economy light are the last to board. So if you are doing carry on only, just gate check your freaking bag. it goes down a chute and is immediately put into the belly of the plane.

A couple of exciting carry-on updates. I just came back from a trip to Europe and flew through Heathrow and Schiphol airports. New scanning technology machines are being installed (Heathrow & Schiphol) where you do not have to remove ANYTHING from your bags (liquids, electronics, etc.) or take off your shoes. You still have to maintain your liquids in a quart-sized bag but it can stay in your carry-on. If they find an issue with your shoes, there is a new machine where you place each shoe on a device one foot at a time. (Heathrow). @2:07 - Disagree 100%. If you pay for a 1st class seat, you are entitled to a space for your carry-on at your seat. I had a person try to game the system by placing his carry-on in the 1st class section while he was seated in coach. I promptly notified the attendant and asked for the bag to be removed out of my area. The bag of the coach flyer was checked and the attendant informed the passenger it was checked when he attempted to get something out of the bag mid-flight.

I’ve never paid for checked bags on international flights. 2 50lb luggages are included per person. What airline do you use when flying internationally?

  • @awaytogether

This depends entirely by airline and type of ticket. E.g. almost no 'basic economy' tickets include a bag

We travel with carry-on packs. How do you avoid checking bags on asian airlines that have 7kg carry-on limits? Are you truly getting your total luggage weight down below 15 pounds, really?

  • @gregneil612
    @gregneil6124 ай бұрын

Sadly, carry on only is not a possibility on domestic airline travel in Australia. All airlines have a weight restriction. Most are 7kg. If your bag weighs 1.3kg that reduces the amount further.

Many airlines nowadays in 2024 will weigh your total carryon. Meaning: Your luggage + backpack + 3rd trick "sling" So I highly doubt that all of your gears is less than 15lbs.

This is fine, but simply not always possible for women at all. Men don't have to worry about carrying feminine hygiene items or makeup and hair items. And when travelling for both work and leisure for more than one week in a rainy cold region, a carryon only is not always feasible. I rather not do laundry in Europe due to cost. So prefer to pack more to avoid this. Europe for example is a lot of walking which can equal alot of sweating or a lot of layers if you get cold easily which many women do. I made a mistake of listening to someone tell me not to pack a jacket for a trip and ended up on the tarmac in the snow when i should not have listened and just carried my jacket. If you are able to do carry on only, definitely definitely do so but just may not work in all circumstances.

Nothing says obnoxious American tourist like pushing the carry on rules so everyone on the plane is uncomfortable so you don’t have to pay when your fare gives you a free checked bag. That’s why European airlines charge to carry on and fares keep going up.
