This is the first one of Avi’s songs that I heard and I was immediately drawn into his universe of outstanding music. His voice and lyrics are something else. For another song with Avi singing effortlessly in his higher range, I recommend the both haunting and hauntingly beautiful “He don’t love you right”.

I can definitely understand that. Amazing song.

Avi wrote this song because while living in Los Angeles for six years, finding time to get into nature was limited. This is how he felt once getting back into nature. This song, for me, calms my mind no matter what kind of day I've had. I almost always end my day with Otherside. I love the many layers on his "wolf howl"! Thanks for yet another great reaction to Avi's music. Oh, and I agree, ine of the best things about Avi's music is that he explores so many different styles and uses his whole range. When you said, "Oh, he went into his higher range," I found myself anticipating your reaction when he went into his "Wolf howls". Talking about the many sides of Avi is really spot on for this song as he released it immediately after Change on the Rise - talk about two different sides of Avi's creative mind. You should react to Avi doing overtones to Lion Sleeps Tonight in concert with PTX if you want to hear his overtones clearly.

This is probably my favorite of his solo songs--which is saying something, because I love literally all of them. But Otherside is special.

Avi is a strong proponent of encouraging young people to follow their musical dreams. In 2014, he, Ben Bram (longtime PTX producer/arranger, and Rob Dietz (composer/arranger) founded the A Cappella Academy, an annual 10-day Summer intensive vocal music camp in California for 12 to 18-year old kids from around the world. Those 10 days encompass vocal training, performance, theory and arranging, and specialties like beatboxing and bass singing (which Avi has often taught, as you can see in this Short where he and his 2023 bass class do a brief cover of "Hoist the Colors" kzread.infobRcq_8DEZyc And he frequently performs his songs with high school choirs and honor choirs, making special arrangements to accommodate the many voices. While he just very recently did such a concert, this one of Avi and the 200+ young singers singing "Otherside" was done in April 2019, just after he was legally allowed to perform his own music. As an example of what 60+ kids under 18 can accomplish in a short 10 days, this video from the Class of 2019 demonstrates what a passion for music and a deep respect for their mentor Avi can create. Avi was in the depths of despair when he wrote this. Pentatonix and all it was, was destroying him. The pace the constant being pulled from one place to another. It was at this time his mom had a relapse of cancer and PTX would not even allow him to get home to see he and his dad. Those wolfs howls were his crying out to be able to get to them and his anguish that he could not. The only thing that kept him from falling completely apart is that his sister was the manager for PTX and she was there with him. He left under not so wonderful circumstances and PTX sued him for breech of contract. They would not let him use his own name for three years when he wrote or recorded something and refused him the rights to the songs he wrote while with them. This just added fuel to his despair. He headed home to California to spend time with his parents, a friend and he camped and of course he spent time in his beloved Sequoia Forest. He then headed to Israel to visit his brother and hike the Galilee and finally, he flew to Tennessee where his cabin with a driveway over a mile long and his 1000 acre property. He secluded himself and began to write again and recorded one EP as Avriel and the Sequoias. It has taken him years to find his healing, and he is still very sensitive to travel without him making the schedule, but healing has begun.

Actually, Pam, he and his sister Esther (who was Tour Manager) did take advantage of any gaps in the tours to jet to LA to visit with their mother, even if just for a day, before having to fly back and rejoin the tour. That was when he was hit with recurring insomnia. And he recorded the Avriel & The Sequoias EP while he was still in PTX, and it was released right after he announced he'd be leaving PTX. I hadn't heard anything about them suing him for breach of contract, but I had about a non-competition clause that expired in March 2019, when he immediately released "Change on the Rise" and set up tours, so it wasn't 3, but more like a 2-year block on him. He was legally stomped on in several ways. So harsh.

I love how Avi layers his vocals....you can hear those super low "growls" when hes doing his "wolf howls"

The locations in the video are all fairly close to Avi's cabin and property west of Nashville. The video company that shot it scheduled it for a night of the full moon and found a spot in the woods that would allow the bright moonlight to illuminate the scene. They were not going to use lighting equipment. The actual moonlight, filtered through the trees in some shots, made all the difference.

And yes, though I loved him with Pentatonix, he has put out so much content since then. So many styles and sides.
