Avi Kaplan - Change on the Rise | REACTION

I was already impressed by him in Pentatonix but this was on another level. Much respect for Pentatonix utilizing his talent but this solo work of Avi's is amazing. It's dark, folkie and I was really diggin it. Check out my comments.

    All of the voices you hear in this song are Avi - he multi-tracked himself a number of times to get the sound he was looking for. I believe the interior is Avi's cabin in Tennessee.

    It is indeed the interior of his cabin, and the outdoor shots are on his property. The exterior is shown toward the beginning of his "I'll Get By" video, and I'm pretty sure the winding road he walks down is the 1-mile long road to his home.

    Glad you enjoyed this. Avi's leaving Pentatonix after seven years and many wonderful songs was heartbreaking, but it was obvious that he needed to take time off and work on his own style of music. Also, PTX had done a few world tours and his Mom was ill and he wanted to be closer to home for a while. There is a video where he sits with all 5 members of PTX and talks about why he decided to leave. Here's a link to that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4CbwdJ8ipa7aLQ.html Avi has put out many solo videos and a couple EPs. One of his first solo videos was an original song called Quarter Past Four, which seemed to many of us to be a song about leaving PTX. Next he put out an album with a group called The Sequoias, with folksy songs like Adeline (his original) and Hey Ya! (Outkast cover). He then put out a few anthem type songs like Change on the Rise and It Knows Me, both originals. I look forward to any Avi videos you might react to.

    Avi sings primarily Folk with a little country feel. Check out his songs I’m Only Getting Started, The First Place I Go, The Summit and Get Down. He writes all his songs and his lyrics are relatable to everyone. His song Aberdeen will definitely give you that old western vibe. Enjoy your Avi journey. You will not be disappointed.

    When Avi Kaplan (pronounced Ah-vee) announced in early 2017 that he'd be leaving Pentatonix at the end of a tour in September of that year, it wasn't to become a solo artist. It might have been a small part of his reasons at that point, but it was essentially a matter of serious burnout from the group's incessant touring and studio work (which left him no time to decompress and escape to nature) and his mother's fight against cancer, with him wanting and needing to be with her in that fight. He was also feeling very constricted in the group, unable to create what had been welling up inside him those 6 years. He's said that he was only able to use 10% of his capabilities in PTX. In breaking away, he was finally able to produce the music that was inside him, and not the pop covers he'd had to do. He was restricted from releasing his own music for almost 2 years, as a clause in his separation contract, so he used that time to find himself again - going on treks (including in Israel where his older brother was living at the time), buying 1,000 acres of woodlands with a cabin west of Nashville, and pouring his heart and soul into his own music. This video was put out by his record label Fantasy Records in 2020 to promote his then new EP "I'll Get By". He talks about his journey and what he hopes his music does for people. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJecuZeDaNS9Z5c.html "Change on the Rise" was his first true solo release, in March 2019, and it opened the gate to a wide variety of genres, styles and feels. Avi's music crosses so many lines, some reactors have come to say that Avi is his own genre.

    You'll be getting plenty of recommendations for Avi's originals. Seeing whereas I find all of his work to be extraordinary, it's tough to pick just a few, so here are just a couple of my own suggestions: "When I'm a Fool" Sunset Sound Session version, "Get Down" studio EP audio only version, and "All Is Well" 7 Layers Sessions version (recorded in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands during his 2nd European tour in 2022).

    Avi, pronounced AH-vee, was one of the original members of Pentatonix. He amicably left PTX when he decided he could no longer keep up with the grueling record/touring schedule when his mother got sick. He stayed with the group long enough to finish their concert tour. He left because he didn’t want to hold the group back. While still with PTX he made a few recordings in a group called Avriel & the Sequoias. It’s difficult to pigeonhole his music. It’s somewhere around country/western/bluegrass/folk/Americana.

  • @cocohol3513
    @cocohol3513Ай бұрын

    The simple answer to the genre question is folk/Americana, but Avi's music is so much more. He loves to experiment with different elements and stretch his comfort zone. His first EP, which this song is from, is dark, tribal and haunting but with a hopeful message. His second LP, Floating on a Dream, is a little more country flavor but still folk. His latest EP, Feel Alright, is definitely a departure with a more funky southern rock/folk vibe. FYI, all the background vocals are Avi harmonizing with himself. And yes, he writes and composes all his music (sometimes with co-writers). Avi has only recorded two covers, Lean on Me and Hey Ya (under the name Avriel and the Sequoias) . There are livestream videos where he has performed other covers that are great as well. Thanks for a great reaction! Also, just as with ptx, headphones allow you to hear all the deep bass notes Avi routinely puts in his music! Cheers!

    Great reaction! Definitely recommend headphones next time. If you love dark and bassy, you must listen to “Chains” (original version). Also check out “Get Down” and “I’m Only Getting Started”. Along with “Change”, all of these songs have been used in TV shows at some point. Avi just finished his US tour and will head to Europe at the end of summer. His live performances blow away any recorded song you will hear…there’s nothing like FEELING his voice! 🥰😍

    Yes, WOW! ~ Avi Kaplan is my main go-to, his talent is so varied and eclectic that there is an extra surprise with each new piece that he releases! From this very powerful video, to his hauntingly beautiful "Avi Kaplan, All Is Well, 7 Layers Session # 126" ~ just a man with his guitar in an empty church ~ to his jamming "When I'm a Fool , Live at Sunset Sound" with Scooter Jennings and crew ~ each one is amazing in it's own way ~ subbed hoping for more reactions to this talented man ~ Glad that you have discovered Avi, Thanks Lou!

    Great reaction, thank you! Since Avi’s amazing music is very eclectic, I like to call his genre Avi-cana. I suggest that you listen to “I’m only getting started” from his 2022 album”Floating on a dream”, it’s sort of a sequel to “Change on the rise”. Subbed for more Avi, he never disappoints.

    Avi is a big folk, rock, western writer and singer. Pentatonix was stifling in some ways to this mega talented artist. Avi is a classically/operatically trained artist with a fabulous 5+ octave range. Also, he chose Matt to be his replacement, not pentatonix. He had received his hire letter to be the new Basso Profundo for The L.A. Opera House and the next day, Scott who was desperately looking for a great bass, called him. Scott had finally reached out to Ben Bram to see if he knew a great bass and Ben and Avi were friends and Ben immediately gave Scott Avis number. Later, Avi (the brain child) along with Ben Bram and Rob Deitz formed a great A Capella youth training choir called A Capella Academy. The first one was formed for youth from all over the world. The second one just formed is for L.A. youth and Avi will be directing the concert this year, but Rob is in charge of this one. Avi can sing a boldly as Change on the Rise and as delicately as the tender voice needed for a lullaby. He just completed his American 2024 tour and will rest, before heading out for his European tour. You may not like his style of music, but he is one of the greatest musicians in America.

    Avi, to me, sounds like a cross between southern rock and native American music. This video gives me Vikings going to battle vibes. Most of his songs deals with healing.

    Avi left PTX for more than one reason, but he was having a complete breakdown from the extensive tour and recording schedule PTX kept. Also is mother was having a relapse with cancer and he wanted to be able to get home to his parents to see her. He is finding real healing and has become a man who does not let others control his life.

    I find that the biggest mistake reactors make when listening to Avi is to try to put him in a box. Avi is very eclectic and just will not fit into one or two genres, his genre is Avicana. I love all of Avi's music videos but I love his acoustic sets the best and two of my favorites are the Seven Layer session of "All is Well" and the KZread livestream of "Full Moon". There is no bad Avi music.
