Welcome back to Navel Gazing at Camp David.
This week we are going to the dark side…a beautiful Power Catamaran from exotic Tunisia…
The Aventura 50 MY!
Today we will,
1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels.
2. Do a full tour asking, "What would Sylvia say?"
3. Naval Gaze at an innovation and/or adjustment that might make life aboard easier
4. Have a look at the used market for 3-5-year-old comparables.
5. And finally give it a "Dave Score" and compare the result with all our previously reviewed yachts.
As always, all this fun will be sandwiched between a pairing of wine and a work of art from the same region as the guest yacht, in an effort to capture the culture and people who gave birth to these wonderful vessels.
You may recall that when I did the last review on an Aventura, the 37, I failed to find a single bottle of Tunisian wine anywhere in Vancouver with which to pair the yacht. Hearing of my plight, Laurent Snieg, Aventura's North American representative, assembled a wonderful care package of Tunisian wine and treats and had it shipped to me after last next trip to the factory. Thank you so very much Laurent!
Waves, wine, art, and ideas…What a civilized way to spend thirty minutes, so let's get going.
From high above Vancouver, we head east across North America the Atlantic and the continent, to the banks of the Tiber, near Roam Italy and the yards of COMAR Yachts home of last weeks guest yacht, the C-Cat 56. From here we head across the Atlantic to Tunisia and the home of this week's Power Cat, the Aventura 50 MY. Finally, we hop a little east to Domaine NEFERIS, home of this week's wine pairing…
Vieux Magnifique Tunisie Appellation D'Origine Controlee IER CRU Sidi Salem 2017
Nestled in a mountainous amphitheatre in Cap Bon, Domaine Neferis' 222 hectares is well sited for the production of 400,000 bottles of quality wine annually.
The slopes channel sea breezes and the elevation gives an extended growing season. Domaine Neferis is the Tunisian land-owning partner. Calatresi, a high quality Sicilian venture, makes the wines. However, the thinking here is Tunisian, with added influence from Australian winemakers helping to gain the best expression from the wines. The estate is progressive in other areas too: the wines are made by Tunisia's only female winemaker, and the winery is experimenting with solar power for its needs.
Vieux Magnifique 2017 is Cherry red wine with intense color and beautiful, sticky tears. Pure and intense on the nose with aromas of red fruit and tobacco. Round onset in the mouth. Good structure with a reasonable amount of pleasant acids and fine tannins, alcohol percentage 13.0 % and dry. In the mouth red fruit, a little spicy and wood aging perceptible. Juicy mouth texture, harmonious, medium plus body, elegant quality and very pleasant medium finish.

For our art of the region pairing today we are enjoying NEJIB ZNEIDI "LA-PLAGE". Oil on Canvas.
Born in Tunis, Nejib started painting at a young age. His art was rather figurative, but he also dabbled in abstract, contemporary and modern.
Nejib is inspired and I looks for his ideas in nature and expresses his love for the natural world through his colorful canvases.
Currently he is a professor of painting at the cultural center with the Tunisian Ministry of Culture.

Just found this channel - I'll be watching more. Loved the way you did the reviews. I know it's not a sailboat (well has a kite sail option) - but have you thought (or can you) about doing a review of the silent-yachts solar yachts (specifically the 62' enclosed tri-deck)?? I am also on a quest to convince my wife and would love to circumnav (and Dive!). She loves her horses and other animals and is not ready to give up the land and animals - I also can't afford it yet - but that's another quest. What show(s) in the USA would you recommend to best see the yachts in this review? Donate for a Dream

Thrilled that you enjoyed it. For shows in the US, it’s the Annapolis sailboat show in mid October. For sailing cats in Europe it’s the International Multi Hull show in La Grande Motte in April. Re the Silent Yacht, I need to find a show where they are exhibiting. Have not seen one yet. Thanks again for watching!!!
think could be a solution with hybrid system for circumnavigation . But cats sailing vessel with furling mast , many big furling for the front sails and shaft drive for me the best way to do it

Hi Stephan. I agree with you. The new Long Reach is a very interesting alternative, but the sails are still my fave.
I’m sure if you cruised the Aventura 50 at 9 knots like the Krogen 48 the range would be competitive. Did you ever do a review of the Aventura 45 sail cat?

You need to fix the "sail away" price of the Longreach. If you assume 50% more than base, that would be $2,362,500 USD.

Hey Mark. In the video I mentioned that the Long Reach is one of those odd boats that comes almost fully outfitted, so there is no 50% on top. Thanks for keeping me honest. D

I have been saying for a while, that all the reasons for choosing a cat over a mono apply even more in favor of a power cat. I think the X-quisite hybrid power cat should make the short list.

Take any pricing with a grain of salt. The wild shifts in both exchange and commodities has been causing big swings in the last 4 years.D

Short of an error on my part, they are drawn from the manufacturers site, three different 3rd party boat data sites and general web info. It can be challenging to find some of the data points, but i do what i can. If you have specific concerns, please contact the manufacturer directly. I don;t have the time to wait on four manufacturers to respond in 2-10 weeks on every video so I do what i can. Also, some data points change over time as the manufacturers dial in the designs. Lovely boat....but the front cockpit would hold 6 m3 of water...6t in weight. Pathetic drain holes. I'm sorry but this boat is not safe. Dangerous

Hi Ahminmabed. Thanks for watching and commenting. I have asked Aventura’s engineering team to comment, but given the decade of successful forward cockpit designs in several high volume manufacturers with no issues, I don’t believe that there is much to be considered about. D

@@navalgazingatcampdavid So you don't consider having a swimming pool on the bow of a small boat anything to worry about. Have you ever been of shore in a 50 knot storm? This boat is only suitable for inshore coastal cruising, which I am sure it's amazing for, but longer open ocean crossings where weather can't be guaranteed, it's totally unsuitable.
