Hey Guys, I just wanted to say thank you for the incredible support over the past few months and especially to my patrons who help to keep this channel afloat, and not to mention we've nearly hit half a million subs which is something I honestly never thought I'd reach :D I'm a lazy bugger however, so I have nothing planned for reaching the milestone, however I do have a video on how to make a video essay coming out very soon so keep your eyes peeled for that. In the video I'll say my controversial opinions on the video essay community and also give advice to anyone who wants to become a video essayist. It just so happens its release may coincide with my 500k milestone so... actually yeah, that's my half a million special, my entirely planned one. (looks side to side suspiciously) Anyway, thanks a ton to every last one of you for sticking around, and thanks to audible for sponsoring today's video. Please do check them out by clicking my link as when you do, it encourages audible to work with me again which makes my income more steady, and thus my future on KZread far more hopeful :D (TL;DR please click my audible link so I can stave off from getting a real job) Have a great day, - Henry

Hi, Henry! Thank you so much for your KZread channel! As a teenager, my ultimate dream is to be a script writer and movie director! I've spent years developing my own ideas of movie franchises and characters. Therefore, me and my family actually relocated to a different city so that I may take writing and directing classes. However, you're channel is what drove my dreams! You For Real made me become a better writer. You have such insightful writing tips and are just full of wisdom! I've taken NOTES off of your videos and I can't thank you enough for educating me! You're the best! ;) Edit: AND CONGRATS ON REACHING HALF A MILLION SUBS!

Yeah, but then you would have taken away her glorious fight and death scene at Vormir. I would keep Natasha's death the same, but make it so that Tony Stark's death would happen sooner in the story (before Dr. Strange or any of the other heroes earlier turned dust showed up). Tony's death would cause the most dreadful and hopeless moment in the battle (kind of like that of Dumbledore in HP6 or that of Aragon in LOTR2), and then when all hope is lost. the portals would start opening up and the tables would turn.

Watching this made me realise that the Infinity War battle at wakanda, and even the one at Titan, really checked all the boxes you mentioned. There was a tangible goal- protect vision till the mind stone is taken out. To do that, they needed to defend the lab. there were moments of despair- people breaking into shuri's lab, Thanos managing to get the time stone, thanos's army overpowering our heroes. But there were also moments of hope- wanda joining the fight, thor's epic entrance. overall, just a much better show than Endgame's shoddy and fan-servicey battle

The climax of Infinity war was better but the rest of it was just a glorified fetch quest with random thanos lackeys we know nothing about. @@agilemind6241 I don't agree in that regard. I found Endgame to be disappointing because it takes a long time to get going, barely has any action in the first half, and the climax is also rather short. The heist is the only part I really enjoyed because of how they went all nostalgic. In fact, much of the movie is rather emotional and about fan service, which was, as I said, the best part for me.

Except he took the final battle and cut out most of it to make his point. The final battle doesn’t start with the portals, that’s the start of the end of the final battle. Since he uses the battle of Helm’s Deep as an example, the portals are Gandalf arriving. Except in Helm’s Deep this immediately ends the battle. In endgame there is more complexity. It’s actually really obvious that this is true when you look at it. In the battle of helm’s deep Theoden rides out (with a small number of riders) to be that last defense, to sacrifice himself in the face of overwhelming odds. It’s at this moment that Gandalf shows up and the battle is immediately over. Theoden doesn’t know that’s going to happen. But he acts anyway. See? It’s the same thing, except endgame spends more time and has more chances for failure even after this magic moment, while LotR immediately has the good guys win. In endgame Captain America steps forward to be the last defense against Thanos, to sacrifice himself in the face of overwhelming odds. It’s at this moment everybody else shows up and the battle is over, shortly, but not immediately, after. Captain America doesn’t know that’s going to happen. But he acts anyway.

The funny thing is, they actually hit all these notes in this movie, but in the fight BEFORE the climax, when the three stooges are fighting Thanos 3v1. Exactly, the fight before was the Helms Deep, and the portals opening was the Rohirim arriving. The problem with Endgame is that they then continue the battle for WAY too long when it's effective over, and they shove Tony Stark's sacrifice in it despite the fact that from the point the portals open the fight is entirely one-sided towards the heroes.

Of course it was, but it was the climax, one of the key things a climax has to do is well... be a climax. It has to be the moment with the highest stakes, the highest dread, the moment where the viewer is the most glued to their seat, the most afraid for their characters, and this climax failed in that respect. @UCLlRx3VzQT5YNIZ-odcewzA DJKokaKola I'm sorry but that's just not true. Endgame is the real climax, not an epilogue. It's nowhere comparable to the retaking of the Shire. Thanos's snap in Infinity War was a cliffhanger. Sure, it was the end to his story arc, but it was a cliffhanger for the Avengers, who are the main protagonists. Thanos is the main antagonist, just like Sauron was. The war at the end was a fight for the whole universe, not just one planet or country. Every single superhero was there, not just a small subset of them. The scale and context is completely different from the Scouring of the Shire. And even if you think its just an epilogue, this was still a full on war, not a bunch of individual fights. And it should do what a well written war does.

This "improved" version is missing one key emotional piece. In the original, the Avengers weren't sure they succeeded in bringing everyone back. So the big emotional moment when all hope is lost is followed by "not only did we succeed in bringing everyone back, but now we have help". Learning that they brought everyone back separately from help arriving diminishes that big moment. I wish there was a way to incorporate these changes without diluting that moment's emotional impact.

Even if the snapped not brought back, there are still the remains of Asgardians, Wakandans, and Kamar Taj Sorcerers. And the rest plays out the same.

The part I find interesting here and it actually explains why I much prefer the fight in Infinity War compared to Endgame is that sense of progression. In Infinity War you see the set-up of the Wakandan army and Thanos’s army landing, you see the forcefield set-up, you then see Thanos’s army claw their way through the forcefield, yada-yada the point is you can see that narrative progression, you see the tide of war turning and shifting all the way to the very end, whereas that’s just missing in Endgame. Even each of the Black Order have moments that can be tracked in Infinity War during the final fight, whereas in Endgame they’re faceless goons.

It felt like the creators being like "look at all the women we have! Give us a cookie!!" Which felt especially cheap considering how Tony's sacrifice was SO honored he got this huge funeral with everyone in attendance, and even though Natasha made the exact same sacrifice, she basically got no acknowledgement aside from one person saying they miss her. In addition to restructuring the battle the way you described, I would also restructure the ending, so that the original avengers got their moment of recognition, but the last moment of the film was that long shot of all of them, so that we could see how far we've come since the beginning, and how many people had to fight together to save the world.

Nat dying and setting Bruce off into Hulk is ALWAYS how I imagined it being better. In your version, have Bruce never turn into brainy Hulk. Keep him human and depressed over the 5 years. He can be in the room fixing the time machine during this version of the battle, but have him need to leave the room for some reason, maybe to grab an item that got lost in the shuffle. He leaves and sees Natasha on the battlefield die at Thanos' hand, as she sacrifices herself to save Clint. This is the moment. Bruce is standing still, silence fills his world. The tint of green envelopes his eyes. There is no stopping it now. He grows larger than ever and Hulk is unleashed in full force. He rumbles through the battle, killing all henchman in his way. He targets Thanos, gets into a rematch from Infinity War, but now gets in all the punches he couldn't get in Infinity War, beating Thanos back with great force... HOWEVER Thanos (like he does in Endgame with Captain Marvel) grabs the Power Stone and in a last ditch saving grace, punches the Hulk with it. This take Hulk out of the equation and Bruce can no longer work the machine. Hope is lost. HOWEVER at that point Doctor Strange returns through a portal with Shuri, the only other genius that can fill the void. She sees Hulk turn back into Bruce as he loses consciousness. He tells her which item she needs. She gets it and moves on. Boom, rollercoaster.

In regards to "knowing where characters are on the battlefield", they actually did it quite well in Infinity War during the battle in Wakanda! Right after Thor shows up, he immediately begins to proceed laying waste to Thanos' forces and the retreating dropships in the air. They take time to show viewers, "Hey, Thor is up here doing his God things, so he'll be preoccupied in case something detrimental happens right at this moment." And in the next few scenes, that's exactly what happens when Thanos proceeds to wreck the other available Avengers and take the Mind Stone. I'm sure everyone was watching that scene, seeing everyone get absolutely slumped by Thanos and wondering when Thor would get there, so this scene did a great job of balancing yin and yang

My biggest issue with this final battle is: I don't know what the heck Thanos was trying to achieve? Is he just trying to kill the Avengers? If so, just blast them from the sky with his spaceship cannons. Is he trying to get back the Infinity Gauntlet? I feel like the fight comes too late. The good guys have done the saving. They've already altered time and brought everyone forward, so Thanos isn't trying to stop them, so what is he actually trying to accomplish, and why does he need an enormous army to achieve it?

Yes, however you must consider how the “final battle” was actually the second half of the whole fight and the initial “dread” scene was thanos beating up Thor iron man and captain America, and, even after captain America’s attempt to solo thanos, he ultimately fails. Then, when all hope seems lost, suddenly falcon’s voice cuts on and the portals open up. So from a whole battle perspective, the portal scene is really the climax and the rest is falling action. The whole hot potato game is very important of course as the stakes are still as high as ever, but the fight for the gauntlet and supreme power over the cosmos actually as a whole was nuanced.

Also there was those 6 stones bouncing back and forth that have been introduced in a span of 10 years that kept most if not all people watching the movie at the edge. there still was the question of that avengers will win but at what cost what was the only way doctor strange was talking about.

  • @Cloperella
    @Cloperella7 ай бұрын

Based on this explanation and the comparison to Helm's deep, I feel like this scene could have been saved with a few small but significant adjustments When Thanos first appears, the heroes have no backup. They're up against an overwhelming army that they are struggling not to get killed by, and Thanos doesn't even have to fight, he's just sitting back and watching. Eventually backup does arrive, a number of portals open up, and Dr Strange appears telling us that it's taking a lot of energy to bring so many people here and he needs time to get all of the players on the field. So now there's hope, but it's got the urgency of time running out as not everyone is there all at once. While reinforcements are slowly appearing, one or a few of the B-list heroes get killed by Thanos's army or Thanos himself. It's an extremely tragic moment, and it shows a lot of nearby heroes devastated at the loss. It hurts even more because some of these people just got brought back into existence only to die shortly after. There's also been occasionally some background heroes who don't have a name getting blown up or overwhelmed, so it makes it very clear that this army is a threat and lives are at stake. After one or two deaths, a lot more portals open up and that's the turning point for the heroes. They've already lost a number of allies, and they're resolving not to lose anymore. Then, when Iron Man finally sacrifices himself to end the battle, it hurts even more because even with reinforcements they had to lose the most important asset to the Avengers. They've acheived victory and saved the universe, but there was a multitude of costs in order to get that.

I went back and watched Helms Deep to refresh my memory (it’s been like 20 years) and I think it’s an impossible comparison that you’re trying to make. Helms Deep in LOTR involves only a few individual standout main characters, who direct the battle, and they engage in solo one on one fights that we are privy to throughout the scene but for the most part the armies on both sides are full of no name extras who are there to be told what to do. Also, they are behind a castle wall, which gives the enemy a single obvious goal (get through the wall and overwhelm the defenders) and the heroes a single obvious purpose (defend the civilians). Because of these two facts, the few main characters can orchestrate huge actions involving hundreds of soldiers all working towards the same goal, and in this way the battle can be constructed into one single narrative: the first approach of the enemy, the loosing of the first volleys of arrows in return, the scaling of the castle walls, the repelling of the invaders, the explosion that finally breaches the wall, the enemy’s main charge, the counterattack by Aragorn’s forces, etc. etc. etc. This is all possible because the setting is a castle, and because there are only 4 or 5 main characters who need to get heroic action moments. Contrast that with what’s going on in Avengers: there’s no obvious obstacle for either the enemy or the heroes to overcome- just a mad scramble to find and control the glove- and every single character (like frigging 30 or 40 of them) are contractually required to get their own heroic moments of action. This is obviously going to degenerate into a melee free for all, and I dont think there’s a damn thing the Russos or anyone else could have done to make it more like Helms Deep. It’s an impossible task. I think considering the limitations/challenges of this scene it actually held together extremely well (I know this isn’t what you meant, but the visual continuity is actually astonishing; all of these incredible visuals happening simultaneously and you never lose track of the action, nor your orientation within the battle space; that’s a credit to the visual effects supervisor and the editor).

John Smith it’s called a plot twist. In the day we live in, we don’t get surprised about what the plot of movies are anymore, especially blockbusters. Thanos was dead and there was nothing anyone else could do so it was over. The characters completely lost hope that anything could change what happened. Then Ant-Man returns and so does the hope of the Avengers. Then time travel. Then they succeeded. And the battle is their second chance to protect everything they lost and they’re gonna do it right this time. It’s the same exact stakes and they know the consequences all too well. Thanos might be from 2014, but he knows everything that happens from Nebula’s memories and he seriously sees the Avengers as a threat rather than an obstacle. He actually got to see his ideal world after his death. It’s not like he was told that he succeeded and that some people were trying to undue it in the future. He knows the threat because of Nebula and sends the Nebula loyal to him through time. In Infinity War, Thanos spends half the movie underestimating the Avengers until the very end. Endgame he brings the big guns and does it himself because there is no underestimations here. He’s from the past, but he is smarter because he learned from the mistakes his future self makes. Don’t underestimate thanos just because he’s from 2014.

I saw a comment saying one of two things I wanted to say, so I will reiterate that and then say my piece. One, the climax of the film is the battle because it's been established that Thanos is coming to the future to keep his work from being undone, but the ultimate goal of the Avengers and the movie has been completed by the time he does that. The snap has been undone, and the world and its heroes have been restored. The "climax" didn't feel underwhelming to me, personally, because it felt like the heroes had won before the fight even began. Thanos's army is literally a bunch of mooks, after all; what hope did they have against literally all of Earth's greatest heroes? The stakes existed because the destruction of the base separated the heroes from the gauntlet, but Thanos had a snowball's chance in hell of actually pulling the snap off again... and so the fact that he STILL almost does is pretty incredible. I do still agree that the battle could have been written better for more drama and tension and such, but I just wanted to point out that, uh... Everything you suggested, they did in Infinity War. Thanos was on his way with all but the mind stone, his army was beating on Wakanda's barrier, and the heroes present were fighting tooth and nail to prevent him from reaching Vision before they could remove the stone from his head. The heroes were under siege, and the enemy constantly gained ground; the heroes would take out one of Thanos's lieutenant, granting hope, but the side of good as a whole would lose ground, granting dread. Then, when it really looked like everything was over, Thor came down with his brand new axe and single-handedly turned the tide of the battle... the last-minute reinforcements. The only difference is, in his anger and quest for vengeance, Thor dragged out his killing of Thanos, causing the Avengers to lose. If he had smote Thanos, it would have been exactly what you said. Marvel's Helms Deep. If they did that again here, everyone would have flamed them for it. The battle could have been better, but it couldn't have been Helms Deep, because they already made that.

I agree that the battle that we got certainly could have been better, especially if it had relied less on fan-service, but I could still feel the stakes at some moments, such as when Thanos did destroy the time machine van, the heroes' supposed last hope, which I think you missed since you said that it would've been better if the heroes were working on building a new time machine. Another moment was the last dash for the gauntlet, which had me on the edge of my seat. It was flawed, but ultimately I think the battle was still a satisfying conclusion for the Infinity Saga of the MCU.

truthfully, all of it really felt like a battle we all saw before, there were some moments that did stand out during battle, such as captain America wielding Mjolnir or tonys snap, however, most of it just really felt like the same battle we have saw in each and every single marvel movie just all put into one, they didnt use some characters to their maximum potential like iron man not having his army of suits come back or especially the hulk not finding his anger again while overutilizing some characters that dont seem interesting enough yet to warrant that much screen like captain marvel or pre far from home spiderman

Here's the thing: The fight in LOTR is like a multiplayer match in a videogame; It feels real, every soldier is out their with their own objectives and goals to complete on top of just killing the enemy, and every single soldier has the chance to turn the tide of the battle. There is a tangible sense that either side could win. The fight in End game is like a war sequence in a single player game; it's a backdrop to the player and no matter what you do it will always end the same way, even if you stand there and do nothing the fight will end the same way, either your NPC Allies will continue to progress in endless waves inevitably overrunning the enemy, or, your NPC Allies will kill enough enemies to trigger an unavoidable cutscene where you lose. There is a false sense of "anyone could win" but it's an easily shattered façade.

But for reference, one that I know well myself for the single player war sequences are any of the battles in Call of Duty: World at War. When I used to play it I'd sit back and simply spectate the two armies fight it out, inevitably the Allies would overwhelm the Axis forces every single time no matter what difficulty it was on simply because the Allies spawned endlessly and there where a limited number of Axis soldiers.

I really like the idea of Hulk losing his absolute mind after Black Widow's death in your scenario. Not only does it give the idea of a shift in hope, but can also lead to more complications. Bruce has now ditched his effort to fix the hypothetical time machine in order to tear through the armies, and we've seen him before in the series of giving no care for the environment, so it possibly creates a bit of a weakness in the hypothetical fortification as he barrels out to thrash the army, leading to a mixture of both hope and dread. Yes, we see Hulk do his Hulk thing, but as a result it's also created at least TWO complications in the situation: one less person helping with the hypothetical Time Machine, and now part of their defenses have been traded for offense. Good tension.

It's called subverting expectations just because it didn't serve wet dreams of fans doesn't mean it didn't serve the character arc. Bruce explains in the film in good dialogue about how he and hulk lost twice when they lost in infinity war. He is the one who brought them all back and it serves the purpose of narrative and his character arc. It breaks the cliche of hulk being hulky and nothing else. How long are we going to see the same old hulk? People really got bored in age of Ultron, at least they rediscovered his character with Ragnarok and pushed him to something else. The same with fat thor. It's good character writing and they definitely can't please everyone especially not fan boys who act like petulant children.

@Vela S If they even bother to respond to your comment I'm expecting to see "Rian Johnson is the best story teller of all time because he ALWAYS subverts your expectations." Or perhaps, "The only story is a story you'll never be able to predict". Since as you pointed out the formula for Hulk stories is nearly a century old. Truly it's even older than that when you look at the basic roots. And it's Jekyll and Hyde. Instead of having some magic potion do the deed it's radiation. Instead of it being good vs evil, it's more akin to the conscious vs subconscious. Let the inner anger and turmoil win, but at what cost. Because Hulk has been treated as the original "Super Powered Bad Side" that anime took to the 11th degree or even further. That means that the good, and the bad, parts of that trope come out in just about any Hulk story. The bad is when we realistically can't predict exactly what power level he's going to be at. The good part is that it's predictable what triggers it. Granted yes I know the comics have an actual better scale of how he would be per power level, but in the Movies specifically, even before Endgame "subverted our expectations", to me he always felt like he was never concrete.
