You are right about katara. Some of the sadest and deepest moments revolve around her. Her survivors guilt , the fact that she had to become so maternal so young that she wasnt allowed to be a child, the bloodbending , the hunt for her moms killer. Her story is only exceeded by zukos

In the netflix trailer reaction a month or so ago, he couldn't even remember any of the main characters names... Of course this version wasn't going to be as good as the original series. But it was leagues better than the M. Night film. Disregarding what Julian says, Dallas James Liu & Paul Sun-Hyung Lee did a great job as Zuko & Iroh. Their look, the voices, & personalities, thumbs up. Meanwhile, Dev Patel didn't bother changing his hair & acted like he was reading queue cards. While Shaun Toub looked like an extra from Vikings.

Better idea: Let people who are good work. Find people who are really good and REALLY want this and give THEM the shot. Some of the young actors, Jesus like 98% of child actors would give them a run for their money and some looked like they weren't trying to act. Some goddamn lines... there's no way Some writers even seriously respected the original show for what it was. This proves how detrimental casting for physical look over skill/screen presence can be.

@@pianist150they did learn waterbending in season 1. Katara was teaching Aang waterbending before they even got to the North. Even after stealing the scroll from the pirates, Katara taught what she could to Aang. After they got to the north and pakku stops being sexist, they made it clear that Pakku taught her new techniques, that's why she was bodying those other waterbenders. Zuko even says "you've found yourself a master haven't you." Even Aang "improved," only they made a joke about it when he waterbends snow around him to become a snowman. They weren't masters by the end of the season, but they absolutely did learn waterbending. The Netflix show completely scrapped it. When Zuko asks the same question in the Netflix version, Katara says "me," which would imply she taught herself waterbending which is dumb since she barely trains in this version

Too many exposition dumping monologues posing as conversations instead of actual character interactions. Ozai and Azula should not have been introduced so soon and taken away time from the narrative where Aang should have been learning to waterbend. Julian is TOO judgmental to be level-headed about this, but he was *REALLY* close to the main drawback of the adaptation: This felt like an attempt to make an "Avatar: The Last Airbender for Adults" outta this when it never needed to be that. Most of the charm of the characters stems from them NOT being written with the pathos being the first focus. "She is the main character 100 perfect through" Spoken like people who don't understand the story's about the whole crew. XD Aang is also the heart of the series, there are moments where Aang had to cheer up and support Katara, he literally was told by his betters that he had to KILL a man and chose a way not to do that and to keep his values intact. Katara/Aang/Sokka and Zuko grow and change with each other's help and the moving of the world and story. I think the quality of performances were mostly proportional with the age of the actors. Probably why the Fire Nation/Zuko subplot was more effective for me than the main kids. I'm on the same page with Martin here. On its own, the show is a fundamentally good story, just with clear execution flaws (dialogue, green screen, lighting etc.), but comparing it to the 10/10 cartoon is just a losing battle. The original show very much improved with Season 2 so hopefully with time & lessons learned the Netflix show can too.

This is not supposed to be a 1:1 copy of the original show. As someone who watched the original over 20 times, I came in with an open mind, expecting this to be its own thing. I gave it a 6/10. It was enjoyable and fun to see their interpretation, but there were flaws. Pros: Great bending, sets, costumes, close to source material, extended look on stuff only talked about in original(air nomad genocide, sokka/kitara parents, firelord ozai and his kids/outlook, etc), decent cast. Cons: not a fan of Aang/katara dialogue/performance. Felt rushed fitting 3-4 chapters in each episode, some cg was meh, some story changes were questionable, stale at moments. Overall, it's nice to see more atla stuff come out. Looking forward to seeing season 2. From a production perspective, I realize how incredibly painful it is to nail all the details in an animated show and bring it to life and how much work goes into it. So, with that being said, I think they did a good job and, if anything, sets the bar for even better interpretations in the future. Episode 1 was rough, but gets better after. Im a fan, rewatched the original ATLA series multiple times, and Korra once. My thoughts (no spoilers that arent in trailers): Characters: Aang: Visually looks like Aang.... acting is..... not good. The dialogue and writing do the kid no favors but geez. I expected it tho from the trailers. But its still pretty bad, hes just not a good actor in this show. 4/10 Katara: Completely bland. Only time theres a hint of Katara is when she yells at Sokka. 2/10 Sokka: Sounds close to the animation. Mixed line delivery, almost subdued. The acting with him is better than Aang and Katara. His romances are handled pretty bad. 6/10 Zuko: He's the best thing about this show. Its slightly different from the original, but its very much the actor making it his own but its still very much Zuko. Acting is the best in the show too, even handles the shit dialogue pretty well. Also choreography is really good. Shame he's surrounded by shit acting, writing, dialogue and directing. But the best changes and expanded storylines are Zuko's. 10/10 Iroh: Its not bad, i get they were going for season 3 Iroh, but honestly i think they played their hand too early. Iroh pretends to be a goof at first so when he gets serious it has oomph in the original. But his acting was not bad, although some line deliveries were not great. He's honestly saved alot by Zuko. 7/10 Zhao: Different characterization, the writing and dialogue goof him a bit. But the actor did a great job at what he was given to work with. 9/10 Suki: not the actresses fault. terrible writing, dialogue.... they turned her into a fucking simp and its terrible. 2/10 (only points are for visual and decent choreography) Ozai: not alot to go on. but its solid. Visually on point too. Didnt get to see alot of choreography, but we'll see. 8/10 Azula: Honestly, meh. Not terrible, but not memorable. Its honestly really big shoes to fill. Zuko and Azula's voices are iconic and distinct. Zuko handled it, Azula not so much, but shes also lacking screentime. 6/10 Bumi: Visually great.... but man it was a bit like Ed from Cowboy Bebop. 5/10 Story: the main storyline is the same, but some of the moving around is hit or miss. ep 3-5 drags, but it picks up at the end. 7/10 Dialogue: Whoever writes the dialogue needs to be fired. It is absolute shite and mostly exposition. A few decent moments, but thats mostly the actors managing to save it. 1/10 Special effects: Still tv, but good for what it is. Firebending is pretty great, air too. Earth can be solid ;), water.... needs work. Momo and Appa solid. The finale did look great though. 9/10 Costumes: Accurate but a little too pristine. 8/10 Choreography: Honestly pretty great. They could improve it a bit though. 8/10 Directing: pretty shit honestly. Good visuals, choreography and some actors pulling it through keep it from total shit, but its pretty fucking bad. The cinematography is pretty shite too. 3/10 Overall thoughts: As a fan seeing the visuals done mostly properly was a treat. The acting is mid to shit except for Zuko, Zhao and kinda Iroh. They need to rehaul the writers room and get better dialogue. If we get a second season ill check it out, but if it gets cancelled im okay with it. There are some story changes i disliked, and a few characterization changes i hated, but i would have been fine if the acting, writing, directing and dialogue were good. Overall rating: 6/10

I was waiting for the "My cabbages!' joke. It wasn't corny at all and I loved it. I hope they do it every season. I thought the show was as well done as it could have been. Animation fans are way too picky and stay on some gatekeeper shit. The reason why live action adaptations usually don't work is because the source material is silly and doesn't translate well into live action because it's too over-the-top. Fans just don't notice because we excuse the ridiculousness of animated works. And idk what show my man eas watching back in the day, but Kitarra was NOT the main character. You must be mistaking her for Korra. And I felt this version of Aang was happy-go-lucky like the original series. You just expected the cartoon version come to life like MC Scat Kat or Roger Rabbit or something.

8/10 - Series stands alone very well next to the original animated series. PROS: Soul of the original story is present. Great special effects and costumes. Good action, suffient and not over the top. Casting mostly on point. Uncle Iroh & Zuko are amazing. CONS: Rushed story telling in 8 episodes vs 20+ in the first season of the OG series. Stiff acting at times, but these are unknown child actors and forgivable. Certain plot points become redundant and dont need to be repeatedly explained episode to episode.

You are obviously entitled to your own opinion and as they always say art subjective. However, on some level this show was created for kids and teens. Because it's based on a Nickelodeon cartoon. Rating it that harshly is wild to me because I'm half way through and I think it's really good (not great). And the only place where I agree with Mr. Angry Charlie Brown in the yellow tee. Is the costumes looked way to fresh three episodes into the season. I haven't finished the series yet but there's a lot here to be happy about and room for minor improvements for a second season.

The point isn't to make a shot-for-shot remake of the original, but the hope is that they improve upon it. The changes they made to the story did not improve it. Azula in particular. Azula would never waste a strike or a word at this stage of the story; the way they have her whining and flailing made the character unrecognizable.

I read that the actor didn't want to be as mean to Uncle Iron as in the cartoon. He thought it would come across as too bratty and ungrateful. But that's exactly why Zuko's arc in the cartoon is so satisfying. He starts out as a ungrateful brat towards his Uncle and only as the series goes on does he learn to appreciate him. It seems like they rushed everyone's arc.

I love the original series and I think they did a great job with this and it has a lot of potential to improve. I think saying it was “hard to watch” is a little dramatic. They got a lot right and a lot wrong, naturally, but at the end of the day it has strong potential and it’s not M Night Shyamalan level bad so I’m happy about that.
