    I have a theory that Katara is actually the main character of ATLA. Like you said, she’s their voice… she’s their moral compass, their heart, and also the first voice you hear when you enter the world of ATLA (the intro). She’s a huge part of helping steady their course to be the right path, though she’s a child too and slips up. But she takes the responsibility and carries that burden. So even though she’s describes a story of a boy taking on his destiny, the show actually is hugely about a girl surviving the genocide of her tribe and taking the power back to end the war for good.

  • @DragonMoth34

    Sadly, the old man turning in Haru is not that far fetched at all. Back in Nazi Germany, people would turn in Jews, even when these Jews had helped and supported them before - maybe even saved their lives. A controlling, fear inducing government can drive communities apart pretty easily; disrupting friendships, neighbourhoods, and families in the process. Fear can drive people to do horrible things to those around them and the old man in this episode is the best example for that.

  • @SnowyWolborg

    @SnowyWolborg

    Exactly. It's 100% a fear thing. There are people in this world who have been alive since the war has begun, so they're the ones who have been suffering the longest and actually remember a time before all of this happened.

    @@Timmir00 They're based off of Buddhist monks. Who are vegetarians. The Air Nomads believed all life was sacred, so being vegetarian was pretty much a necessity to be one. 'As you may recall, all Air Nomads, including Aang, were vegetarian because of their spiritual beliefs (as learned in ATLA s. 1, ep. 5).' Their entire cultures food is vegetarian when you read about their diet. 'Much of the culinary traditions of the Air Nomads were lost after their civilization was nearly wiped out at the beginning of the Hundred Year War. However, it is known that the most defining characteristic of their cuisine was strict vegetarianism'

  • @Timmir00

    @Timmir00

    Жыл бұрын

    @@jayleemittens9858 While many Buddhist monks are vegetarians, not all of them are. Tibetan Monks historically lived in an area where vegetation is scarce, so eating meat wasn't uncommon back then. Nowadays there has been a push to be vegetarian, but it's a personal choice based on ones ethics, means, and ability to do so. Now as for the Avatar Universe, you are correct in that a large amount of the cuisine they had were vegetarian in nature for the whole "all life is sacred" teachings that come from Air Nomad society. The point I was making however is that Air Nomads were strictly held to be vegetarian. Likely there were teachers, like there are in the real world, who push for their students to keep a vegetarian lifestyle. However being vegetarian is ultimately an individuals choice, not enforced by Air Nomad society (much like shaving ones head). A choice I'll admit is likely made by a large majority of Air Nomads as it's a natural conclusion from their teachings, but still a choice nonetheless. Unfortunately though, there's only so much room to speculate. We don't get to see Air Nomad culture much outside of what we see in the show, though I'll admit that I also have yet to read Yangchen's novel, which might have more information in this regard. Still the point I'm trying to make is that being a Monk or Nun and being a vegetarian isn't as strict as most people think it was. Thus why Aang made a point to state it to Yangchen like he did.

    So yeah. Now that you've made it through this episode, it's safe to say that the Earth Kingdom isn't doing too well either. It's a massive region, mostly rural areas that are being overrun and extorted by the Fire Nation. It's pretty much just a few massive walled cities that are currently holding out against the invasion, along with Kyoshi Island. The Firebenders have a much greater ability to work with metal as a byproduct of their abilities, giving them a substantial technological advantage over the other nations. It hasn't been enough to breach the walls of Omashu or the capital city yet, and Kyoshi Island's just been staying neutral, so the Fire Nation's mostly ignored them.

A lot of people take exception to 03 because of the ending, I don't mind the ending - prefer 09 but 03 is serviceable. I've had it in my head for a while to re-purpose 03 and create a fan animation that reveals an endlessly looping series of failures by Ed that have him keep trying the wrong path, and to eventually pick the Brotherhood one, but by doing so, had the Dwarf awaken that will set the next world on its path and lead to the same white void again that Ed has to make a choice on. (there'd be the two gates to choose, the 03 reality and the one we see in Brotherhood that Ed would eventually choose by going through but then awakens the Dwarf and makes it aware of 'Truth') I'm trying to keep it entirely spoiler free just in case these guys see this and decide to do a reaction to Brotherhood.

    Huh, a very interesting Episode, that really puts certain things into perspective. I have kind of forgotten about what the Next Episode is going to be about, maybe it’s the one where Zuko tries to use the necklace as a way to get Aang, it would be, but i don’t remember. Anyway, things are going to keep getting interesting from here on, I will look forward to see what you think.

    Is someone gonna tell them that this is not an anime written and produced overseas? That it wasn't a manga adapted into an anime and dubbed in English? That it is in fact an American made cartoon produced by Nickelodeon Studios that took stylistic inspiration from japanese cartoons? AND that there is in fact, no darker Japanese dub? If not, someone should get on that....

    As someone who's favorite thing in the world is One Piece I'm not upset in the slightest. ATLA is amazing, the biggest difference is just the length/pacing/scale. The characters, story, animation, and world building are still 10/10

    @@eagleangel5568 That description of One Piece sounds like what someone who has never read or watched the series would describe it as. I love both series to an absurd degree, and while Avatar is fantastic at world building and character development, One Piece is a superior work. The one thing I'd give to Avatar/Korra over One Piece is the slice of life aspect, watching the Gaang just chilling and interacting with each other and having compelling moments of characterization made for some of the high points of this franchise. I feel as though One Piece could benefit for more moments like that, not to say they never have/had any, but generally the moments like that are far and few between, especially in a series with a length like One Piece. tldr: i dont think you know anything about One Piece, it's a superior series to Avatar in about every regard, though Avatar isn't bad, or even mediocre by any stretch, they're both phenomenal. And citing the length as a negative against One Piece just shows your lack of any valid criticism lol

    I mean the only reason Avatar isn't technically an anime is cause it didn't originate from Japan. Other than that it would have been. Its not like a majority of cartoons. Regardless, one of the greatest stories ever animated.

    It's important to keep in mind that the war has been going on for 100 years. These people are in the same conflict that their grandparents fought in. And it's the Earth Kingdom that has been taking the brunt of the damage from the Fire Nation. Very few things can wear down your spirit like being in war and being in prison. These people are exhausted, and they just want this whole thing to be over.
