16:09 The English version isn't actually "in dub." The original language is English. It's done in an anime-like style, but it was made in America and animated after English-speaking voice actors recorded the dialogue. That's why the voice acting isn't terrible.

It's hard not to feel sorry for Zuko. He was basically raised to be evil, and always feels the need to prove himself. Iroh is really the only positive influence he has. On top of that, he values honor very highly, so failing to capture the Avatar and getting exiled is pretty much his worst nightmare.

Momo is smart, Sokka is the one who wanted to eat him so Momo offers food to the hunter hoping to prove he useful and worth sparing. He didn't drop the food in front of all them as a group or to Aang or Katara specifically but dropped it right at Sokka's feet.

You have to respect Iroh even this early. He absolutely humbles Zhao by LITERALLY CATCHING HIM mid sneak attack having lost a duel, and casually tosses him across the ring. Then Iroh turns around and humiliates him by pointing out that the exile Zhao talked down to was the more honorable, then he politely thanks him for his hospitality and leaves. Respectful, even as he walks all over his opponents.

Best show honestly, you can rewatch it 4 times and still notice new details, its crazy For example if you pay attention to the background of Zhao's room there's interesting stuff there 😉

it released in 2005 and ended in 2008; if you look in the subtitle tab its only registered language is English, because it's an American-made cartoon, not an anime.

The gestures used by the "bender" characters are derived from Chinese martial arts, for which the creators employed Sifu Kisu of the Harmonious Fist Chinese Athletic Association as a consultant. Each fighting style is unique to the "benders" who use them or characters who are aligned to a certain element. For example, practitioners of "waterbending" use movements influenced by tai chi and focused on alignment, body structure, breath, and visualization. Hung Gar was the inspiration for practitioners of "earthbending", and was chosen for its firmly rooted stances and powerful strikes as a representation of the solidity of earth. Northern Shaolin, which uses strong arm and leg movements, was chosen to represent "firebending". Bagua, which uses dynamic circular movements and quick directional changes, was used for "airbending".

Indeed, I also like how the animators were *taught* those martial arts in the studio, just so they would know how to animate them and use every detail they can and implement them in a bending, by doing those martial arts they could actually *feel* where a strong point or where any point would work with bending, like how most of the bending movements are done at the end of the martial art movement- the impact, the animators really had a feel at what point in the movement is really impacting.

Feb 2005 to July 2008 was the original run. Also the arrow means Aang is an airbending Master (notice none of the other kids had it), and the Firelord is voice-acted by Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker and Joker on Batman the animated series)

I always bring this up, but there is a fun, but at least somewhat lesser-known, fact about this episode. Monk Gyatso, Aang's Airbending Master and father-figure, was named after Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th and current Dalai Llama. Of course, the whole conception of the Avatar Cycle of Rebirth was also heavily inspired by the continuous Rebirth of the Dalai Llama. And Aang, at least in terms of personality and beliefs and so on, was also significantly inspired by the current Dalai Llama. Remember that name, though: Tenzin Gyatso. Because there is at least a decent chance it will come up again later.

Fun fact that I didn't learn out about for a few years after I first watched this series; Commander Zhao is voiced by Jason Isaacs, the same actor who plays Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies!

Avatar is one of the best animations ever produced in the US. The way they handle these tough and serious topics, like a freaking genocide, in a soft and respectful tone, but without dumbing it down, is just incredible. Not many animations are appealing to both adult and children audiences like Avatar is.

While Avatar is anime-inspired, it is not an anime. It's an American cartoon. So its not dubbed over in English - its original. We refer to Avatar as an honorary anime because it was so heavily influenced by anime of that time - Avatar btw originally aired from 2005-2008. It's sequel, Legend of Korra, aired between 2012-2014.

The South Pole school system really failed Sokka here. The Avatar has existed in some incarnation for the last 10,000 years, the entire world knows about them and Sokka’s clueless? This is the show’s way of telling us, the audience, exposition, concerning the world the show exists in. I just wish it had been done without gaping holes in the story
