I've always thought about that this episode. The show is obviously next to perfect but a lil thing i wish they did was maybe a small storyline or episode on a consequence of that. To clarify a few things: -When Aang went into the Avatar State, he combined his power with that of the ocean spirit to avenge the moon spirit and save the water tribe. *-YES, AANG STILL HAS TO LEARN WATERBENDING.* Everything you saw at the end were merely the Avatar State and Ocean Spirit acting through him. Aang himself didn't learn anything from this.
@20000dino

"Aang himself didn't learn anything from this." I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. I do think Aang did learn at the very least basic-level waterbending, Katara just become got to an advanced-level thanks to her hard work in comparison. That's something which still annoys me about the show - that they had to find such a clunky reason to make Katara grow above Aang waterbending-wise. And for what? Why not make them both near the same level and have them learn from each other for the rest of the show? I feel like that'd have been an incredibly more interesting and organic direction to follow, and it'd have made them all the more closer. Isn't that what a relationships should be about, after all? Growing with each other?

@@20000dinoSpoilers for Seasons 1-2; I think it makes sense that Katara advanced so much in comparison to Aang. Aang is a bending prodigy, he’s used to things coming easy for him, which is why he advanced so much when Katara taught him earlier in season one. But the moment he’s hit a roadblock he struggles to make progress. Similarly, when he does get a bending technique right, he immediately moves on to something else, thinking he’s mastered it. He did this with both water bending and fire bending. Like Jeong Jeong said, Aang has to learn discipline before mastering all the elements. This all culminates in Bitter work where he’s immediately stuck and can’t bend earth. While this is largely due to Earthbending being the opposite in nature to air bending, it also may be because of his struggle to grapple with things he’s struggling with. In the same episode when Aang fails to stop the moving boulder, he retreats back to water bending with Katara where he’s comfortable, further showing how he struggles to tackle his mental block head-on. It’s kinda like how some people who are labeled as gifted in school later struggle with actually studying, since they picked up on subjects naturally in class beforehand and thus never needed to study thoroughly. I think due to Aang’s characterization justifies why his progress in waterbendjng slowed down once he was challenged.

@@20000dino What OP means is that Aang didn't learn anything from when he merged with the Ocean Spirit.
@rudrodeepchatterjee
2 ай бұрын
@@20000dinoit's not clunky, there's a reason for that. 1) The Avatar is a generalist. They can bend all 4 elements but may or may not be great at all of them without years of training. A talented bender of one element would be a specialist, and it makes sense that it's possible for some bender to be better than the avatar in that element. 2) We need to remember, Aang is severely rushing his training. For one, he is 4 years to early to be learning the other elements and deal with worldly affairs. Secondly, he doesn't have enough time to learn all elements like Roku did(12 years). He is rushing his training by learning a move and quickly going to the next, hence the comment Pakku made about how he's bending the water but not feeling it. He is trying to bypass the intricacies of mastery of waterbending. Meanwhile Katara is living her dream, so she would be on her prime focus while learning waterbending. This also explains how she learnt so quickly. Unlike other waterbenders, she has dreamt of this day since childhood, and finally got it after nearly missing it. Why wouldn't she make the most of the few days of training she's getting?
The reason that Iroh could tell that Yue was touched by the moon spirit, it’s because he’s very attuned with the spiritual world.
15:45 I think you guys missed/forgot a few important lines of dialogue from that scene at 4:06 Zhao learned about the spirits from the hidden library (keep that detail in mind, it comes up again in the future) and Iroh had journeys into the spirit world. Not sure if you guys read the comments, you probably shouldn't to avoid spoilers, but Aang hasn't fully learned water bending yet. What he did was go into the 'avatar state' and channel his previous lives (just like he did in episode 2, where he bent water to escape Zuko before even learning it at all). Notice how when Aang became the giant koi fish spirit, he only pushed. That's because he was embodying the moon spirit, Tui, which means Push (The ocean spirit (black fish) is named La which means Pull)
I've always been under the impression that Iroh just followed Zhao and his detachment to the location. He was against Zhao's intentions as soon as he was told what the plan with the spirits was.
There’s a cool theory that Yue was supposed to be the next Avatar, and was born at what should have been the end of Aang’s natural life (he would have been around 96). It goes on that she couldn’t thrive as a baby because Aang still had the Avatar spirit, so only another spirit (in this case the moon) could help.
I always wonder what the ocean spirit was thinking when fused with Aang, is it like "yo let's get fuck shit up" and then when the moon comes back and it let's Aang go is it just like "here ya go, thanks for the help bro"

I think its awesome that we see Zuko try and save Zhao like how Aang saved him. Both saving/trying to save their enemy. Awesome.
"Here for a rematch?" Says the Firebender to the Waterbender in the north pole's frozen tundra during a full moon
I think you guys might be a little confused on how much of the spirit beast was Aang. If his eyes are glowing, till near the end, you can mostly assume he’s not the one in control.
Given their reliance upon the ocean for force projection and logistics, the Fire Nation would be the second most impacted in the short term by the loss of the moon. Even ignoring the Avatar being used as a conduit for for the Ocean's Wrath.
I'd just like to point out that in the last three episodes Zuko had his crew taken from him, was then blown up out of the top of his ship, then stowed away on the same ship is the man who tried to kill him, and before the cuts and bruises even faded swam his way into the north pole, snuck his way through the north pole without being seen while everyone was on guard because of the siege waiting to begin again right outside, found the secret spirit oasis, fought a Katara at night the day before a full moon endured the fight till sunrise then beat her, slung Aang over his shoulder and carried him through a blizzard, had to sprint across a frozen lake hidden by the snow while carrying Aang, then took him to a cave specifically so Aang wouldnt freeze to death as he put Aang next to the fire then stood as far away from it as possible, got slammed against the cave wall by Aang, got wrecked by Katara at night on a full moon and surrounded by nothing but snow and ice, woke up snuck away hunted down Zhao then beat him in a fight, then found uncle and spent who knows how long floating away on a tiny raft with no supplies like food for who knows how long before getting to the earth kingdom and this boy is 16 years old

When aang was being used as a conduit for the Ocean spirit, you notice that the spirit could only push the water as it represented that halve where the moon represented the pull. Pretty neat and I cry everytime I see them fuse with thr music
I'll say this now: They will start doing these "previously on" bits before every episode in the future. PLEASE ignore them! They often reveal things from past episodes that come back in that one, which is helpful if you're a child and it has been several months since you last saw that past episode, but not when you're watching this on a weekly basis.
It's the spirits of the Ocean and the Moon. Eternally pushing and pulling. When Aang becomes the big water thing, it's because the Spirit of the Ocean (the black koi) fused with him in order to unleash its wrath over its lost partner, the Moon. It's seeing the Moon again (because of Yue's sacrifice) that finally makes the Ocean tranquil again.
The seen at the end is always chilling. Two powerful spirits combining to unleash their rage upon the fire nation, Iroh showing his prowess as a fighter for the first time in the show, and the sacrifice made by the princess.
The first time I watched this show was in Spanish and Koh has Homer Simpson's voice in that version, so I didn't know whether to be scared or laugh.
Years ago, I happened to catch a re-run of the first episode during the "penguin sledding" scene. It was my first experience with the show, and I thought it looked ridiculous. Didn't even bother learning the name of it. A couple months later, flipping through channels again, and I happened to catch this episode. It hooked me immediately. I had to find out what this show was and watch the whole thing. So I got the Book 1 DVDs from the library and started watching from the beginning. Only then did I realize this was that silly penguin riding show I'd dismissed months ago!

Same here. I was in my edgy pre-teen phase, and thought it looked too childish, only to end up tuning in halfway through Book 1. Whenever I want to introduce people to the show, I always show them The Storm, first, and see how they like it lol
Aang didn’t turn into a giant monster. The monster was Aang channeling the Ocean Spirits powers. He wasn’t in control. So no he hasn’t mastered waterbending. In fact he’s learned virtually no waterbending since arriving at the North Pole.
This episode truly show how lucky they are spirits are peaceful right now. Because I'm not sure even the avatar could stop them. But yeah, this is only the beggining. I'd say book 2 has that desperate feeling about it, that sense of something is wrong... While book 3 is more on the offensive side, the last stand ebfore the end. Book 1 is really chill compared to these two, it's really just the introduction. I love how pride Zhao was in the end, not wanting to lower himself to Zuko's level. Even if it means to die for it. And Yue's death was sad too. At least she got to live again as the moon spirit.
Oh I forgot Zhao mentioned the Spirit Library here
If you guys remember last episode, Zhao says he found a hidden underground library, which contained information on the location and mortal forms of the Moon and Ocean spirits.
Anytime he enters the avatar state he is a master of all of the elements but he still needs to master it and it’s risky for him to be in the avatar state.
This had my favourite badass Iroh scene. We saw bits here and there with how he deflects fire blasts and lightning strikes, but here was the first time we see him as a neutral party and a spiritualist and its when he singlehandedly threw down with four guards in a matter of seconds. This was the moment I knew Iroh was more than a badass, he was not to be trifled with in any form.
There is a theory that Yue was supposed to be the next Avatar in the cycle and the reason she was born weak was that she didn’t have the spirit of the Avatar inside her since Aang was alive. So the moon spirit gave her part of its essence to keep her alive.
Koh is actually one of the scariest spirits you can ever find, mainly because of his ability to steal one's face, an act that can strip one person of their sense of individuality. Koh actually has two reasons to do this, with the first one being to punish humans for their bad deeds. Actually, the reason why he stole the face of one of Aang's previous incarnation's love one was to punish him for his arrogance. But the other reason is actually quite sad and also why he is not very liked between other spirits as he allows humans to approach him (and even lure them to him) just to steal their faces.
Kho is such a fascinating character. That's badicly all we get from him in terms of in the show. He is mentioned, I think, once later. But he is such an ancient and self-serving being that sits in chaotic neutral. He will try and enslave the mind and body of a person, making them but a shell if what they were until the die, but he also would help people regardless, even if he tries to kill you.
The great fish is the Ocean Spirit, he used the avatar´s energy and his mortal form to complete the former of the waterbending, this is the clear example to teach us that Aang is not even ready to make a great duty by himself in the war. Katara is actually the best waterbender in this Era and you will discover soon.

I love the face stealer, he's one of the first spirits Aang interacts with so it's before some of the lore about previous avatar lives are revealed, but watching back with that information makes it clear who some of the faces are. 1) Iroh followed Zhao, because on the ship he told Iroh about when he was researching about spirits about the Moon (Tui, white) and Ocean (La, Black) spirits, that's how he got there 2) Before he became the giant water spirit monster, La, the Ocean spirit, lent their power to Aang to avenge their partner, the fish monster was not Aang mastering waterbending but more spirit energy amplifying Aang's Avatar State (Avatar state is when Aang, the avatar, can tap into the memories and skills of his past incarnations) he did not master water bending yet 3) Hei Bai, the panda spirit, you've met him and his monster form before in the ep where you also first met Avatar Roku's Dragon and took Aang into the Fire Nation Avatar temple where they found about about the Solar Eclipse and the Comet Hope this helps you enjoy the story more
The giant sea monster thing was more fish than aang. He was basically just a battery.
12:47 Avatar the Last Airbender, the only kid show that's man enough to have an on-screen death! Well, the Lion Guarde did it too. But that was for little kids and it had a disclaimer at the beginning.
it has been eluded to that Iroh has a connection to the spirit world. Zhao mentioned that he had a journey into the spirit world, and he saw the spirit dragon that one time. it makes sense that Iroh can recognize spiritual energy.
Everytime I watch Aang channel the spirit of the ocean to avenge the moon spirit I get chills and watery eyes, lol. There are a lot of amazing and impactful scenes in this show, but that one is up there for me.

Yeah me too! I can't tell you how many times I've watched these scenes, whether through reaction videos or the original. This and the "Firebending Masters" always make my eyes tear up and give me shivers all over. I feel as if I was there with them at those exact moments and witnessed them firsthand. Amazing animation and story telling!!!
And the season ends with a hell of a bang On top of Aang's spirit adventure, bringing back Hei Bai and Roku, where we meet the unnervingly horrific Koh the Face Stealer, we also have Zuko's insecurities explored by bringing up his sister - who appeared in The Storm and at the end of the episode. Zhao, through information gathered in a secret library, also did succeed in his quest, but his hubris once again was his own undoing, too proud to listen to Iroh, too proud to take help from Zuko. Aang was right though, the moon spirit did send a giant spirit monster to wipe out the fleet, only it was Aang at the heart of it in an absolutely badass scene, tragically though at the expense of Yue's sacrifice, Sokka does not have much luck even in season finales. The Book of Water is shut, but now opens the Book of Earth
All Iroh did was follow zhao to the location lol. Zhao found the location from the library, Iroh had no clue the spirits physical forms were on earth.
Both the fire lord and the spirit monkey are voiced by mark hamill
14:48 he didnt do anything in that scene it was all Ocean Spirit .d its the same situation when Roku took over Aang's body
12:47 “Bro, it’s a canon event.”
Iroh is one of the few good guys to ever follow through with a threat of that kind.
Basically book 1 was S tier, and it only gets progressively better. The entire series is dope. I've seen it dozens of times, it still pulls as my favorite. Can't wait for you to continue the series!
aang didnt show off any of his water bending ability in this episode he was in the avatar state (since episode one whilst in the avatar state he could do incredible feats of other bending types) he also was attuned or combined with the other water spirit which is what made it extra powerful and aggressive as it used him to get revenge.
I live for Zhao getting straight up kidnapped and assimilated by the moon kaiju
16:54 and right there, my guys... i present to you, Azula. The most scariest character in the whole show. You'll see what i mean when you see the rest of the show.
He was already waterbending like a master in the Avatar state in the first episode. I think its fair to say that just because Avatar State Aang can bend water, it doesnt mean Aang outside of it can do it.
what you have to understand is that the avatar state is not Aang. It's the power and skill of all the previous avatars. basically, when the tattoos glow it's spirit shenanigans and he'll do things he normally could never do.
12:01 he did not master water bending yet. He was just possessed by the ocean spirit. It was similar to when Roku possessed him in the fire temple. The Avatar is suppose to be the bridge between the human world and spirit world. What we just saw was the power and wrath of the ocean spirit funneled through Aangs avatar state.
The Following book brings in my 2 favorite characters. 1st one in my opinion is the best written character in any animated series. 2nd one you just can't help but love em. Actually the simplest, yet most interesting one. 2 of the greatest benders to ever live.
Yue means moon is chinese, but apparently, it's also a name given for children you think aren't going to survive/die in birth, so that name has like...triple meanings with this episode, I like it.
Aang will never learn a style of bending through some magical ability. You don’t need to keep wondering. He has to work for all of it.
4:10 That clown 100% deserved an anticlimactic end though
It’s crazy how each book gets so much better than the next
hope they take note of the library that Admiral Zhao mention. as it will bring up later in the story
