Whenever someone says characters in Avatar aren’t allowed to say “kill”, I refer them to this episode. Not only is it in the first sentence Kyoshi says in her on-screen debut, she admit to being the one who did it and would have no issue doing it again.

Kyoshi was without a doubt one of the most badass Avatars ever. Her dedication to justice was absolute, willing to do anything to ensure it. She ensured the peace for over 200 years and even after her death, the four nations lived in peace. But not everything she did was good, as she did make mistakes that had a long-term impact on the Earth Kingdom.

This episode is apparently ranked near the bottom of most fan lists of the series, but it's always been one of my favourites. It not only showcases the amazing badassery which is Avatar Kyoshi, but it sets up an important plot point which you guys immediately picked up on: is the Avatar allowed to kill people? And I'll never miss the chance to highlight the fact that Avatar Kyoshi did say that she 'killed' Chin. Even though his death was a stupid, avoidable accident, Kyoshi recognised that she caused it, and was willing to be held responsible for it.

Kyoshi is a late bloomer to bending and has a hard time doing precise/bending small items. She is literally go big or go home. She takes no BS from people as an adult but is still respectful. A sorta thing that used to bug me in that episode is how Aang is convinced that he... or rather Kyoshi did not kill Shen. Thing is, Aang literally has no way of knowing whether or not she did it. It was his past life afterall. Looking back at it now, its actually in character as Aang is a naïve kid. He assumed that if he is a pacifist, so was everyone else in the avatar cycle, after all they are all him so they must all share the same values and whatnot. Aang doesn't realize yet that his values and nature is a product of his upbringing and culture that he is a part of. I honestly think this is reincarnation done right. In so many shows reincarnation is basically somebody being reborn over and over as the same person, with the same values, personality and very often even the same appearance. Reincarnation is definitely not that, and I appreciate the fact that in the last air bender past lives of aang are distinctively different people, given they were all from different cultures, history periods and faced different hardships. What I am going to say next is... kinda a spoiler. Technically it never comes up in the show proper but by just saying that and letting others know it won;t, that is already a spoiler in on itself. So if you don't want any spoilers for the avatar stop reading now. I especially like the fact that the previous air avatar, Yangchen, is pretty much nothing like Aang when it comes to personality of character. We don't really learn a lot about her from the show proper but in the supplement materials about the world, its clear that she is not a stereotypical example of Air Nomad virtues. In fact she is pretty bad when you judge her as an air nomad. That and also her personality seems to be much more rough and serious. She is not a chill, bubbly air folk like Aang is. And also she is not somebody who puts indviduals above the greater good. It could be easy to make the previous air avatar the carbon copy of aang but they didn't, they didn't even made somebody similar to aang, and I am so fucking glad they didn't.

Funny fact, before she finds out about being the avatar (at 19 yrd), she wasn't a great earthbender and had a lot of issues to control earth in general, a lot of people around her find her kinda clumpsy and foolish, even herself. Avatar works like a file, and in that file u can make a new file. In that file its empty but u can put lot of stuff to it. Then if u make a new file into it, the new one is refreshed, its empty. So when Avatar pass away, a new avatar comes and it got a fresh new memory and new life. Basically that.

If you haven't done so by now, I encourage you guys to read up on Kyoshi cause she was an utter badass. She lived for 230 years! She was around for so long that the fire nation (next in line for the avatar cycle) feared she'd never die. She was also insanely tall, towering over everyone and had legit no issue with killing people and being heavy handed in maintaining justice and peace which made her a very effective avatar but her policies also lead to the decline of the Earth kingdom after her death.

you guys NEED to read the Kyoshi books! The author worked with the original writers to ensure it was accurate and still captured the same energy and feel of the show, they are SO good! The books made me realize that Kyoshi is not a murder machine, just going around killing willy nilly, she took it VERY seriously. She did not take killing and death lightly. She took it so seriously that when she faced Chin, she never laid a hand on him, she tried to talk reason and when that failed she did what she had to to protect her people but because the actions she took indirectly led to Chins death(the idiot just sat and screamed on a crumbling cliff instead of saving himself), even though she had no intention of killing him, that connection was enough for her to consider it her fault he died even though it really wasn't. Its just wild to me that everyone in the fandom thinks she's just so blasé about murder when its actually the exact opposite 😅

13:10 : if you want Kyoshi stories, read the books "The rise of Kyoshi" and "The shadow of Kyoshi", they are both excellent. They notably explain Kyoshi's natural ability to bend immense masses of Earth, but how she also struggled to focus her earthbending to bend something as tiny as a pebble.

Regardlss of which nation the avatar is born into, theyre more than that. Roku isnt "a fire nation avatar", hes just an avatar. Sure, by birth he is fire nation. But the avatar is kind of above governments and nations. Wouldnt be easy to keep the peace between all four nations if they showed loyalty to their own above all others.

The Avatar is responsible for their actions in a past life. They're the same person, same soul. That has advantages and disadvantages. But Aang can't go around taking credit for all the good he has done over the centuries and then wiggle out of the bad things.

Okay so I just checked on audible there is two for kyoshi two for the wind avatar before aang and they're just about to release a Roku book so they're probably going to release one more of him and then they'll probably cover the water bender before kyoshi after that. The Roku book is available for pre-order currently so if you start with the kyoshi first book then by the time that you finish everything they currently have they should probably almost be ready for the next Roku book by the time that you're caught up
