Thank you for actually understanding Korra’s attitude. You have no Idea how rare that is. Everyone calls her annoying this season but she has a right to be angry. People hate on her for the smallest stuff. And admittedly, I think the writing this season has a lot to do with it.

Yea, Korra’s attitude isn’t an issue I have but I hear about it a lot. My issues come up a bit later. I can say now that I don’t like the spirit change. They just feel different to me than ATLA. I have very very few issues with the first season but some do pop up in this one and it mostly has to do with inconsistencies with spirits and the spirit world.

@@artist0154 I had no issues with episodes 1-3 explaining the force. Because it makes sense and was always part of Lucas’ plan. TLOK’s lore was not what was original planned for ATLA lore. My issues with Star Wars was I believe episode 8 where they used a ship to go light speed into a cruiser. Light speed is not going super fast, it’s literally going into another dimension for faster than light travel.

imo she can have attitude with her dad if she wishes, but we spent parts of the last season with her learning to be chill with Tenzin, and trying to win over Mako. Cutting Tenzin permanently and being all around unreasonable with Mako now is just not the move, even if she was upset for good reasons. It's the added disrespect in her interactions where she seems to forget that unlike Tonraq, Mako and Tenzin don't *have* to be there to support her.

And that’s where I run into issues later in the show. Feels like the writers had no understanding or limited understanding of the spirit world, spirits, and the avatar state. To me it felt like they had little respect to the original universe they original writers created. Felt like they scrapped it and made it their own. There is still a bit of good writing but I feel like I’m in a different world than ATLA. In my opinion it’s the worst season but that doesn’t mean it’s absolutely horrible. What I said above is my main issue, I almost cringe when a spirit is on screen in TLOK. When I first watched it I let some slide still a certain point and it really turned me off TLOK for a while but I still continued.

I think the major difference between Unalaq and Tenzin is that despite being the leader of his country Unalaq ONLY cares about spirits. It’s all he talks about and he looks down on any supposedly non-spiritual behaviour. Meanwhile Tenzin is a deeply spiritual man who clearly also cares deeply about the actual lives of the ordinary people around him.

However, I do think that her attitude in the first half of this season could have been better handled with some different lines and expressions and that would have gone over better with some people. For example, have Korra's father voluntarily leave rather than Korra telling him to leave the way she does (so that she doesn't look super disrespectful), or have her bow back and respectfully say goodbye to Tenzin when she disowns him, or have her not easily give Mako such a hard time 🤔. Okay, I’m not really saying anything that hasn’t already been said, but when talking about Book 2, it bears mentioning. I don’t entirely blame the writing team for all the issues fans have with this book. I mostly have problems with Nickelodeon’s indecisiveness with the show. They didn’t know if Korra would do well enough to warrant another season, and when it did well with Book 1, they really rushed the team pretty late to make another season without much leg room. That being said, while it’s easily the lowest point of the show, I personally don’t find it as atrocious as many say. (edit: just realizing now, forgot to mention how it’s pretty misunderstood in various instances, instances that make it a good book) But this is the primary reason why people who begin reacting to the show on KZread have people like me commenting that Books 3 and 4 will incentivize you to keep watching the show throughout its shortcomings in Book 2.

I’m fine with Korra not being perfect, I’m fine with Aang stuff, I’m fine with most parts of the show. I can’t forgive writers for misconstrueding concepts that were already amazing. Do we know that she knows that? I can’t remember. I do have my issues with the avatar state and a lot of the spirit stuff at large in season 2 but not really her using it recklessly. Korra is pretty reckless and doesn’t think about the big picture as much as Aang. I wish I could talk about my real issues with the Avatar state but spoilers.

@@sayonfoxx8862 no one ever told her. Tenzin just kinda scolded her for using it to win god damn air scooter. But you'd think he would've told her what happened to his father when Azula shot him with lightning. That's a problem people tend to have with the AS in LoK. It's not as unique as it was in ATLA; it was revered there. Respected. Here? It's just another anime power up trope. In ATLA they made it INTERESTING by having Aang use bending he didn't know; aka drawing on the knowledge of his past lives. THAT'S what made the AS so unique. It wasn't just another power up trope. Aang Earthbended in season 2 episode 1 when he thought Katara was dead and destroyed the courtyard. He waterbended himself out of the ocean in the second episode of season 1. THAT made it cool. Korra made it boring. Kyoshi knew how to GLASSBEND. Kyoshi knew techniques that no one else did. Yangchen knew Airbending techniques that could kill. Imagine if Korra, in her reckless use of the AS, accidentally KILLED someone with Airbending. That could have been a great overarching plot to season 2, along WITH the civil war, with her now struggling to BE peaceful in a time of strife and violence. She could try and rely on her past selves for guidance and just as she's reaching out THEN _______. But no that was done for SHOCK value. Sorry, sorry I could rant about season 2 for hours.

In ATLA, Roku comments that the Avatar state was a boost of power, a time to use cosmic energy and then shut down. Until the end of ATLA, Aang didn't do this, he didn't know. He simply entered the Avatar state out of pure anger, revenge, despair or fear. And he used the avatar state in a desperate way so it sounded "epic". The first time he enters the avatar state knowing what he was doing is when he will remove Ozai's bending. On the other hand, Korra is very conscious in its use. "Aah, but she's entering to win races", guys, Korra is a TEENAGER who never had time to have fun or distract herself, discovering on her own how to use the Avatar state and how being an avatar is a journey she must go through . I don't understand anyone who tries to argue that she uses it deliberately without consequences, because she doesn't do that. In reality, Korra is so aware of using the avatar state and the power of the avatar that this has always been her biggest dream, and yet many villains have tried to take it away from her.

  • @pokemon18ish

Korra using the Avatar state as a way to win a children's race is in a way, to show that she takes being the Avatar for granted. Similar to how she did in season one. She builds her whole identity around being the Avatar. So, when she says she respects the Avatar state, she doesn't. She needs to understand what it means to be the Avatar. Especially, when it comes to how she handles problems that affect everyone. It's another great way to show how she differs from Aang.

I'd recommend watching everything without subtitles, but having the subtitles on the edited video (in case you're blabbering over some dialogue, so it's easier for viewers to keep track of which part you're reacting to). The only exceptions being movies/shows that have foreign languages, in which case if possible have translation subtitles for foreign parts only for yourself (not sure if this is a thing anymore, but I remember back in my day before Netflix and all, DVDs sometimes did have that option).

I think there are 2 things those who hate on this season don't like: 1. Korra's character kinda backslides a bit in a few episodes to acting like her old self before the events of season 1 but I understand that the show writers were doing so to make her more susceptible to join her Uncle's side and she is a hot headed teenager I think some people forget she's a bit more like Zuko personality wise in that she is prone to lash out at others when she's upset or angry even when she was just angry at herself. And people seem to forget it took Zuko all the way to halfway thru season 3 to stop doing that, he was awful to Iroh when he was imprisoned when deep down he was starting to see he was in the wrong. I'm not saying they are exactly the same things but I can understand it but I do think it was more the writers attempts to set the stage for the conflict in Season 2. And 2. Lots of people dislike the story halfway thru the season because of "changes to the lore" but those 2 episodes I personally thought were awesome and are what improve the second half of the season. I think most of us are in agreement that Season 2 is the weakest of LOK but I don't think it's as bad as others seem to think it is.

I completely agree with you and my issue is your number 2. I had no issues with Korra backsliding because that’s actually very realistic. I also think it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. Even though the inconsistency really really messes with me. I’d say I have issues with 25% of the writing but that 25% hurts so bad that they got it wrong that it feels closer to 50%. It’s like when Disney ruined Star Wars physics just for shits and gigs. It feels like the writers had no idea what spirits, the spirit world, or what the Avatar State fully is. Just a general idea and not nearly the amount of work the original writers put in. It almost feels disrespectful to ATLA. By the way, I also don’t have issues with how Aang is portrayed later on, I’ve heard that’s a point of contention as well. **SPOILER** **SPOILER** **SPOILER** My other issue is at the end of season 2 they completely scrap what the Avatar State is. When Korra loses her past lives her Avatar state should have gone into the dumb. She should have pretty much lost all her power but she was just as powerful as before. Where was “the Avatar State is based off the power and knowledge of past Avatars. If they are gone they are gone and so should their power and knowledge.

This is nonsense. Zuko's made absolute sense and was consistent with his past. He's the literal fire prince with a lover back at home. Why would he join Team Avatar at that point, when he never reconciled with them yet??? Korra, in contrast, learned to work with Tenzin and Mako back in Book 1 only for her to get peeved by them and complete 180 to her Uncle (whos clearly does not teach Korra anything, is just using her, and has NEVER communicated with before) while also beefing against everyone she's made friends with in Book 1. I know what they were going for, and they botched the execution. It just wasnt believable that she would completely lash out against her friends, father, and lover over a stranger and they acknowledge this by Book 4 saying she hates her Uncle and loves her Dad lmao....

Never thought about Korra not using crazy powers in the Avatar state, but it kind of makes sense because the Avatar state gives access to all the previous Avatars' powers and wisdom and every Avatar before Aang lived in a world divided into 4 nations that were constantly at war, whether it be the fire nation in Aang times or Chin the Conquerer in Kyoshi times or every other threat every other Avatar had to face, all the Avatars had to defeat someone to solve their issues and that was the only wisdom they had for Aang. Whereas Aang created the Republic city to unite the 4 nations, which means that Aang would've added the wisdom that destroying the opposition isn't the only way to solve conflicts, so when Korra taps into Avatar state she's also getting Aang's wisdom and doesn't just turn into a destructive force.

To be fair to Korra, Aang only used the Avatar State in dire situations because he had literally no control over it, not until Guru Pathik showed him how. Before that, the Avatar State only showed itself in extremely emotional situations, such as after Zhao murdered the moon spirit or when he thought that one Earth Kingdom general was hurting Katara. With Aang, the Avatar State was highly connected to his emotions. With Korra, the Avatar State didn't show itself until after Aang returned Korra her bending and she seems to be in control of it, but probably because she's surrounded by people who can teach her how. Unlike Aang, who had no one to teach him until the end of book 2. He had to figure a lot of this Avatar stuff out by himself. The Avatar State is purely a defense mechanism that an Avatar is supposed to get in and out of at will.

There is no "Avatar State Second Grade". It doesn't get better or more powerful than this - not that we've seen, at least. The Avatar State lets you access a great wellpsring of power and the knowledge of your past lives - there is no need to worry about mastering it because you get any necessary knowledge when you go into it. Unless you're somehow up against something no past Avatar has ever seen or done. So using it more often just risks the Avatar's life more - if you're using it all the time every day, every time you bend, you risk accidentally dying (or a targeted assassination) and breaking the cycle forever. Edit: And Aang's journey with Guru Pathik was, in part, a journey for him to master control over the Avatar State faster and quicker than he was supposed to. Not every Avatar needs to accomplish the same journey since they're all different people. Aang was very spiritual but had difficulty fighting anything head-on, Korra was a physical prodigy but spiritually weak, etc. And as others have said, the Water Kaiju was unique circumstances: Aang merging with the Water Spirit after Zhao killed the Moon Spirit. Doesn't mean they can't do crazy stuff, though: Kyoshi separated a peninsula from the mainland and made Kyoshi Island in the Avatar State. Roku destroyed the old Imperial Palace with an air burst during his fight with Sozin.
