Avatar: The Last Airbender at PaleyFest LA 2024
Cast and creatives of Netflix's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" (Albert Kim, Jabbar Raisani, Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Arden Cho, Elizabeth Yu) gather with moderator Perri Nemiroff at PaleyFest 2024 to celebrate their show. Topics include: how producers tried to appease fans of Nickelodeon's 2005-2008 animated version of the show via a live-action rendition; the specific scene that made each actor first connect with their character; what 14-year-old Cormier has learned from being the show's on-set "leader"; the cast's travails when attending "boot camp" to master the characters' demanding physical skills; changes that have been made from the animated version's storyline; a new quality that each actor will more fully explore in the upcoming season; and how cast members' newfound fame from working on the show has affected them.

thank you paleyfest for posting the full panel 💜
Hearing Dallas/Paul talk about their dynamic on screen and their process to get to that believable Nephew/Uncle relationship was so articulate and polished! I'm quite impressed with Lizzy and Dallas in particular-- their composure and professionalism come out like they've been in the business for years. Meanwhile Gordon is nervously fishing for words, Kia won't stop giggling and fidgeting her hands, and Ian is that impressionable college grad interviewing for his first job. You can tell they're newbies to all this, but they're doing their best. :D
The best cast ever
GORDON'S ALWAYS SAYING THE QUIET PART OUT LOUD LMAO 😭
Such an amazing cast! Hope people get to know them even more like watching their panel. Excited for s2 and s3!
The cast was the best part of the show, I love them so much! Can’t wait to see the panel
I love learning more about this show and how it was made. Can’t wait for the next two seasons.
my favorite cast
i love this cast! thanks for uploading the full panel
my favorite people ever
I was wondering why it seemed like Kiawentiio was the only member of the central cast who wasn't being invited to conventions. After seeing this video, I think it's likely she opted out because she wasn't comfortable speaking in front of large crowds. She was visibly nervous here.

I'm thinking it's a PR choice. Katara is an iconic character, and NATLA Katara (both the character and Kia's acting) has been heavily criticized, so it can be overwhelming for a teen to attend public events where people can be so passionate with their opinions. It's a harsh reality but this is probably a self-preservation thing.

@@sanjomazBut people who invest in convention tickets and autographs do so out of passion and love for the actors, cuz those things aren’t cheap at all.

Right, but imagine being 18, dealing with a fandom that’s existed for longer than you’ve been on this planet, where you talk to dozens of people who can say Katara is their favorite character and also say “so who do you ship? What do you think of Zutara? It’s great, what’re talking about? Katara had to practically be Aang’s mom! You don’t think Katara was too motherly to Aang? Also, Why isn’t Katara angry or hotheaded in this series? I liked that about her in the cartoon- she was so badass! No offense but I liked your acting better in Anne w an E; the writing was so stiff and Katara is kind of the Ember Island Player version here. Do you agree?”…. And as a professional, you just have to smile and be polite and take all that in. It’s a lot to deal with, but maybe she will be ready to handle that kind of stuff as she embraces the character and how big the fandom is.
UNCLE ZUKO 😭

OMG YAY
Let's go
47:06 I felt Zuko & Uncle Iroh story is the most interesting and loveliest part in session 1 LA even though their screen time much less than the main trio. I agree with Dallas, hopefully when it comes to his ‘betrayal’ part, they should make it carefully believable that it comes out of his very deep desperation to go back home. When I recently revisit the scene on the animated version, it just felt like too sudden for Zuko to side with Azula after ‘just’ her little manipulated speech, when minutes before he has the moment of compassion with Katara.

Lowkey even though I like the show😭 you’re right. Whoever made this was clearly a gigantic zuko fan 😂 they didn’t build the relationship with aang/katara/sokka at all but they damn sure built the Iroh and zuko relationship 💀

@@caleb4851they did, and its the most least telling part of the show, you should rewatch the show. They did the main 3 character arc very carefully

Well said! Albert Kim once talked about how Zuko is arguably the most popular and loved character in the ATLA franchise... and you can definitely tell this adaptation is focusing on the Fire Nation and Zuko's emotional redemption arc. Aang is kind of just there as an influential sounding board, and Katara and Sokka might as well be prop pieces. :D
They should follow the animated series and focus more on AANG.
You all need new writers
Thankyou so much for the High Quality panel, I enjoyed it a lot!🫶
