Toph's "there it is!" joke is iconic
Let me just remind you exactly what Toph's doing when the library started to sink: She's holding up the entire buried structure by the tip, while both keeping it intact AND while Wan Shi Tong is pulling it back into the spirit world. And that's all while she's at a huge disadvantage, because of the sand.

@@videohistory722 however he did lash out and direct that anger at her. While the reaction is to be expected, it’s not ok. It’s one of the things I like about this show. These kids are strong and determined in many ways but at their core they are still children. I think that’s one of the main reasons I could relate so much to them
Sokka says "what kind of animal is that?" when they see the fox bring in the scroll to the library because they aren't used to seeing just normal, non-fused animals like a Fox.

Avatar goes from good to REALLY good for pretty much all the remaining episodes
A really cool way to look at Zukos struggle in this episode: Lightning represents abuse. Zuko was raised in an abusive family, which only got worse when his mother left. Azula is Ozais golden child, on top of a lightning bender. He's unable to lightning bend himself because no matter how misguided he currently is, he is not his father, nor his sister, and never will be. However, he CAN learn to redirect that abuse and let it go. Kinda puts it in perspective who he's actually yelling at when he screams at the sky.

I REALLY like this idea. And maybe since Iroh never used lightning bending to attack people(at least not anymore) he was the first to stop the cycle of abuse, and redirect it somewhere else

I loved this, this is how I see zuko and I’m not even done watching the series on my own. I see a lot of people just think zuko is stubborn but it is extremely realistic and actually not something a lot of people can understand if they haven’t been in a similar situation. He has inner turmoil he doesn’t understand as he is still young and going through it. The only thing he knows in life is that abuse and just wants to go back cause that’s his “home” and “life”. The lightning scene is my favorite so far

poor toph trying to hold up the entire library which was actively being sunk by the owl spirit, while both her vision and bending were impeded by the sand and then appa gets taken :( this episode is like bittersweet; they just got an advantage on the fire nation/the fire lord but then lose their main method of quick traveling _and_ friend in one go. it's great storytelling, but damn, poor Appa
Bryce always looks like he's contemplateing his entire life in the intros lmao
Why did they skip past Zuko asking for the lightning? As if it isn’t one of the saddest moments in the show, the way he starts crying😭

@chrispaulus4390

@@Naahi95 i disagree. the lightning is a powerful metaphor for zukos trauma and his inability to deal with it/resolve it. it's representing his abuse. he's screaming at his father. it's the reason he can't produce lightning. it's the first time we see him cry, and we see he can't cry out of his damaged eye. it's also central to the episode title "bitter work," and their attempt to show aang and zuko side-by-side overcoming something difficult. to call it a "teenage angst" thing really diminishes his character arc.

The owl was so creepy and unsettling.
yeah sure, just gloss over two of the most profound moments of one of the key episodes of the series, Iroh saying pride is the source of shame and Zuko screaming for the universe to strike him down. That skip from halfway through Zuko crying at the sky to Aang playing a flute to gophers was upsetting
@Naahi95

I mean, Zuko is being super overdramatic and emo (like always) lmao if you're emocionally mature that moment won't resonate that much with you. At least that was my experience, I prefer his later moments of conflict, like the end of S2 and the whole of S3, they're way more challenging and groundbreaking than this little tauntrum scene.
This library was brought over from the Spirit World thousands of years ago. The Spirit World exists alongside the physical world, but only certain people can see the Spirit World. Some think Professor Zei ends up in the Spirit World.

I don't think you guys understood what happened to Zuko's mom... When Azula was talking to zuko she told him that Azulon (their grandfather) said to ozai "you must feel the pain of losing your first born by sacrificing your own" and he thought she was lying but she wasn't... Zuko's mom probably killed Azulon to protect zuko and then disappeared.
@madih4586
2 ай бұрын
Yes. She and Ozai conspired together to kill Azulon so that he could become fire lord and she in return would be able to protect her son but the cost was banishment since she still poisoned the fire lord to death. This plot point doesn't actually make sense to me though as the scene in which ozai is looking at the pond makes it seem like the wife is also dead and he's grieving. His reaction here is also very inconsistent with how he reacts to talking about his wife later on to zuko.
Bummer we didnt see more of zukos important scene at end of bitter work
Iroh is easily #1 when it comes to the "wise old man" trope. My guy will sit you down and give you some good ass sage advice, not just for the situation but also for life in general, all while cooking up some fire ass tea for you to drink and relax.
Sadly, the wan shi tong comment about "people believing their war is justified" is right. Any nation in avatar world or real world was build by war when someone taken lands to another one (for example, the roman empire started with a small village). In the avatar case, if the fire nation is in the wrong for this war, then any nation shouldn't exist as they began with maybe a small village that swallow other villages around until fire nation or earth kingdom were born (air nomads are nomads and against violence while water tribes are not one entity). If the fire nation had succeed in this war and united the world, it will be like when someone united the fire nation or the earth kingdom but as a world scale and that didn't stop the world to work correctly.
Iroh really is the Avatar. but he says no go give it to the next person.

Day 89 requesting Penny Dreadful :) Another episode that shows such strong parallels between Aang and Zuko, similar to “the Storm” episode, I love how they do that. And Toph holding up the library is one of the strongest portrayals of bending in the show when you really think about it.
The way I've always interpreted it (also backed by many moments in the series), because Toph 'sees' so well with her seismic sense, everybody just forgets that she's actually blind. So when Katara made a dig at Toph not being able to see the stars, she had legitimately forgotten that Toph was blind and was simply making that comment because Toph was locked up in her rock tent. Everybody in the Gaang sees her for her strengths, not her disability.
Also, the cute animal is a Sabertooth moose lion cub.
