    Still would have been the most impressive cg at the time. Guys, this hardly looks any different than the final product. Just because they chose a different style for the navi doesnt mean this is garbage. Literally the only thing thats different is the navi models, and the mocap actors arent good. Use your eyes. If this was cleaned up by an ai and upscaled to 4k, youd clearly see this isnt much different. For those saying there was better cgi at the time... its competition was shrek. If you think that looks better, you need glasses. Ps2 games were still being made at the time. A ps5 wouldnt even be able to handle a game made with these graphics, if it could, itd run horribly.

    When compared to the final film, this doesn't look all that great. But if you look at it like it's a mocap animated movie that's intentionally stylizing things, it's actually not too shabby. Perhaps if they ever wanted to make an animated series expanding the lore of the franchise, this style may actually work for it.

    @@Aethuviel I don't think the quality or lack thereof was the point of this footage. They had to work out a process of capturing actors, putting them in a scene, adjust performances, add effects and do a final render. They would not just have jumped into "let's make some blue CGI people" and try to make a 3 hour movie without having worked out the process first. It was completely new at the time. Having the process worked out allows refining individual parts, i.e. getting all the real artwork done and build the real render pipeline for the final movie.

    For 2007, this is actually still really impressive. Like very successful tech test. I can see how they evolved the face of the Na'vi to better express the facial nuances. These rigs, the eyes are slightly too stiff. I wonder how this would feel if you dubbed in Zoey's voice. Her performance was a lynchpin to fleshing out how the Na'vi carry themselves and emote.

    The E-motion capture technology developed for Avatar ,allows for a level of reflected expression that we recognize inside. ,our ability to recognize the Na'vi and Avatars as emotional beings is a huge part of the films story expression "voice" on many levels .. @Frogger non vocal charter gesture expression is a form of internal language expression we read and connect with on an intrinsic level. We all seem to just take it for granted , as a person with Asperger's who's gesture expression does not come naturally , you quickly lean just how important this form of expression truly is , the ability to give the Na'vi charters in Avatar that form of inter-connective emotive expression that in the past looked so fake in earlier films is something I happen to think is quite artistic achievement on a number of levels and in recognition it took a lot of talented people to bring this to light it massively changed what we have come to expect in films today.

    not really, its just test, some people have no clue what was already achieved by that time, there were already movies like Pirates of the caribean 2 with digital Davey Jones, King Kong from Peter Jackson, Star Wars 1,2,3, Lotr trilogy, ... , mocap was already well established technology for the digital characters, they were just improving it each year more and more

    This is how you make a decent film. You do trials, you test your scenes, see what works and what doesn't. The first trials will be bad(such as this) but you polish it, make sure everything is just right and then send in your final product and look at what we got in Avatar and Way of Water. A polished, well made product which started out from something ugly and uncanny such as this. That's how you make a good movie. You start out bad but rectify your mistakes and you don't releas it half baked. You release it when you're satisfied.

    This is literally a test and some of y’all didn’t grow up to realize that. It’s alright to make jokes but even the actresses and actors didn’t have to take it seriously but to show example so the actual people who is going to play as them in the final could reenact and make it better. I just don’t feel like it’s fair for the people who did have to act in this mocap to receive lash or even the designers. “Trust the process” because y’all still loved it in the end.

    When you really think about it, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña were perfect for these roles… Sam with his voice of liquid gold is great at playing a d*mb military grunt who is affectionate and open to learn, and that we can connect with… Zoe is great at playing a believable native character that will be familiar enough to us and has very believable actions in the world of Pandora… It all came together brilliantly in the end…

    I would actually like to see an Avatar spinoff series with this animation style. It kinda gives off Star Wars The Clone Wars vibes. It also reminds me of the CGI that was in a lot of the big budget 2000's music videos. All they would have to do is brush up on the graphics to make them a little more updated and make the Na'vi characters look a little better. Sully's CGI character looks a bit wimpy, but Neytiri doesn't look too bad.

    Our "stereotypical view" of Native language vocal expression that was given to us within the examples of many early Hollywood films does not fit at all into the essence of what Avatar's story Conveys. the films storywriter made an internal effort to root address these layers within the films charter expression. so no Neytiri does not speak like the old Tonto in the lone ranger. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dm16k7WOm9zTk9o.html

  • @ReidGarwin

    @ReidGarwin

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@allrock1238 I understand for the sake of storytelling that they make Neytiri more fluent of an English speaker in the final movie, but for a movie that has a learn able Conlang, the broken English would actually have been more interesting to hear from characters such as Tsu'tey, or Mo'at. Neytiri previously being a somewhat learned student of Dr. Augustine's school would also make sense for her to speak English clearly. "Tonto speak" may not be respectful in films directly sourcing specific REAL Native Peoples or featuring them, but the Na'vi are supposed to be a neolithic extraterrestrial race, and simplifying and expressing their English as well as presenting the Na'vi language could have been done where the audience is still able to empathize with the characters. Again, I state that I prefer the Project 880 draft including this motion capture test, the Na'vi models, and the accent, which Zoe Saldana completely waters down unless speaking Na'vi.

    Something about giving the alien characters a recognisable East Asian accent can also be a bit stereotypical, this idea of Asians being exotic and featuristic and alien to the west. Asians absolutely deserve to be represented in sci-fi in a variety of roles. But the final Na'vi accent settled on in the film that references various African, Slavic, and Polynesian accents by nature of the phonics in their complex language developed for the world, is quite distinct for the genre.
