I think you're wrong on this. I think that we aren't dealing with mixed bending in the sub-element bending, but more of just specialized versions of the that element of bending. Metalbenders aren't melting the metal to bend it, but manipulating the earthly impurities in the metal. Lavabenders aren't using firebending to heat earth, but making the atoms of earth move faster to heat it up and therefore liquify the earth making it lava/magma. Vinebending is not a mixture of earth- and waterbending, but a manipulation of the water in the vines. Bloodbending is not a mixture of water- and energybending, but a manipulation of the water inside the animal/plant body to bend it to your will. Bloodbending can take away ones bending by blocking the connection one has to ones chakras. It does this by severing the blood flow to ones chakras. Healing is not a mixture of any element with water, but a specialization that waterbenders can do cuz of how essential water is to everything in life. After all, water is used for cleaning. Combustionbending does not involve airbending, but is a way of projecting fire from a distance and creating an explosion by doing so. Any new sub-elemental bending would also not be a mixture of bending, but just another newer specialization of that element. Kind of like how accountants are just a business form of matheticians. You understand what I'm saying, right? This is not a mixture of elements, but specialization.

Welp this is certaintly not confirmed. Avatar isn't very reliant on the sciences, but at the same time what he suggests in his theory could disrupt the balance of the four elements, so it's very unlikely that mixed bending could be a big thing.

That's what I think as well. It also kinda explains why lavabending is so rare while pretty much any waterbender can change water states, because converting states of earth requires much more energy. Theoretically an airbender might even directly liquify air by this principle but that is much much more energy instensive so that's why it's impossible or at least very difficult.

That's exactly what it is, but it seems that many people were absent from elementary school on the day their teacher taught the three states of matter (using water as the basic example).

I always imagined they were able to control the pressure of the element. Which would explain lava and ice.

Like in 7:40 he is confusing electricity with energy! Just because electricity is a form of energy, that doesn’t make all types of energy electricity, so energy benders bend one types of energy, the chi energy, not every energy, if so, then they could control heat (fire, sort of) and cold (which is the absence of heat), on a similar note, gravity and fricking nuclear fission (nuclear weapons)!! Now just for fun, all energies, and therefore forces, fall into two categories: potential energy and kinetic energy. So if energy benders could bend all types of energy, reality is their bitch

I dont think is mixed bending. Is more likely that they are affecting the elements at a molecular level with out using a mix bending technique

This could technically be confirmed using multiple instances. First, when Toph discovers metal bending, you can see her sense the impurities within the metal cage she was in. She doesn't exactly bend the metal itself but the impurities within the metal. This argument can be backed by the part where in the battle against Hiroshi Sato where he used a mecha tank made out of platinum, which is highly pure, rendering the Korra and other earthbenders unable to bend it. Later, Kuvira did the same in her big mecha. I think either Toph or Lin actually mentioned to focus on the impurities as well. Bloodbending relies on the same principle, bending the water found in our blood (or more accurately, the blood plasma) to manipulate it. This is also seen in the "swamp benders" that manipulate the water inside a plant. Sandbending is basically bending very tiny rocks. Now for lava bending, this is quite interesting. We know that in our world, heat is just a state of energy where molecules are very excited and bouncing all over the place (to a certain degree due to the molecular bonds). Now all that would be needed for lava bending would be to make those molecules get excited enough to heat up the earth to start making the molecular bonds less stable and voila, you now have lava! The same goes for creating steam, excite water molecules enough to break molecular bonds and you get steam. Lightning bending involves splitting positive and negative energy to create lightning (this is basically what electricity is, a flow of positive and negative ions). This is why when you see a firebender shoot lightning, they point one hand towards the target and one behind themselves. You can also see then when someone shoots the lightning, their back-facing hand also has a beam of lightning which goes (mostly) straight to the ground. Heat can cause friction within the air, which can aid into creating a charge (which one can then "collect" and release when desired). This is also why it's not seen that anybody can actually stop without shooting once they have started the process, the charge *needs* to go somewhere.

Counterpoint: No it’s not.

States of matter are determined by the speed of vibration of their molecules, the benders could simply be controlling their elements down to their molecules.

My immediate thought was bolins lava bending and his fire and earth bending roots! I always connected his lava bending to that mix!

In lore a lot of this is controlled by chakras. Each element has its own corresponding chakras. While only the Avatar can use all elements it's not unreasonable to assume that regular benders could alter their abilities by using a different chakra on their element.

well isn’t what makes the Avatar the Avatar is the fact that Rava is a part of that persons life cycle and is the reason they’re able to control all the elements right? so that wouldn’t make sense, sure the “capacity” is there but on what levels? spiritual? ok, but that’s not the issue. it’s the body not being able to handle that without help.

This was not true explanation. It has nothing to do with mixing elements to get an sub element. It is canon that giving heat to an element (x example earth) is pasrt of earthbending itself. So u move the element's atoms a lot until it gets enough energy to turn into a liquid (lava). U dont need fire to give heat to an element, u just need to rise the atoms movement and their energy whitch any bender can do to their elements and sub elements. They can make the atoms move less too. This makes them use more energy and their movement as said is less, so they turn x example. from liquid water to solid ice. It does not need air. This is confirmed and even if it was not, it makes absolute sense.

With all of the various bending abilities, I have a point of reference to make. When is comes to control of different phases of water, think to control of the molecules elasticity of organization. Ice is an expanded stationary form of fluid water. Temperature isn’t needed to cause the stillness. Similarly steam is energetic expansion of water that has too much energy to still into a collection of pooled fluid or a expanded solid. Earth is ground that can stay solid in calm state, but should become fluid with enough excitement introduced to it, which becomes lava. Those are the concrete forms of bending. Air can be like water in the only control over steam and what is in that or how it moves (speed, lift, pressure). Fire is an element of introduction of energy into anything it has access to, fire therefore can manipulate the state of existence of all other bendable elements. Plant bending and other stuff is shown in the last airbender as the manipulation of all the contained elements in something with the awareness of elements contained. With the effort put in, most elements can be bent to control the others

@I Really dont know The whole "earth+fire=lava" thing only works if you modify firebending to be the ability to change the thermic energy needed for a substance to change state. Now if you consider firebending to be that, then the other bending arts also change definition meaning that waterbenders would be able to bend ice because they are able to change the molecular agglomeration of water, and earthbenders would just be able to change the agglomeration of the earth like we saw when Aang shrunk the rocks that were around him in the last episode of ATLA. From this point of view, lavabending would only be possible if an earthbender had the ability to change the thermic energy needed for the earth to change state. So if we take this approach then we know why lavabending is only a thing for Bolin, Ghazan and the avatar

part of me thinks that combustion benders are air benders raised in the fire nation hence why we only see them using the combustion and not other fire bending styles edit: i also think that for say lava benders the the reason they are so rare is because (besides the avatar) they NEED to be a child of a fire bender and an earth bender.

You could be right on the parents part because we know that Bolin in LOK was a lava bender and his parents were fire and earth benders so its possible and it could also be possible that Gasahnz's parents could also be fire and earth benders, but for the combustion bender part I think might be a little bit wrong only because we do see that in season 4 of Legend of Korra, P'Li was a combustion bender but she could also bend like a normal fire bender using her hands in one episode but she chooses to use combustion bending.

It isn't necessarily mixed of bending but instead a mix of martial arts and spiritual techniques primarily from a bending. This is what lighting redirection is. Energy Bending is something currently lost yet non-benders can have bender babies. And the bending is something genetic and spiritual

Little late but Snow Bending is pretty much the same as Ice Bending Plant Bending is more similar to Metal Bending, where you're bending the Water (or in metal, Earth) that's in the object you're Bending. Not the object itself.

Subtending changed the molecular structure of the core element. Not a combo of different bending.

Have yet to see an airbender steal breath from someone

And after giving it some thought, bloodbending would be a mixture of water (primary,) air (secondary,) and earth (thirdary.) Water because of how much of the body is made up of water; Air because of the red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body (especially the brain, think about how terrifying that one is;) and Earth because of the iron that naturally occurs in blood. That means that a blood bender can mearly cause pressure points or even chin points to close of due to forcefully clotting the blood at those points of origin.

Lightning in real life is superheated plasma which is present in air so lightning bending is fire and air mixed together. so combustion bending and lightning bending are pretty much the same except for the form of output. In lightning bending, it creates lightning while in combustion bending creates a massive explosion

At an atomic level the different states of matter are determined by the space between the molecules and how they move. So I think shifting the states of matter and adding/relieving pressure would be how skilled water and earth benders make lava and ice/mist as well as firebenders creating lots of heat to make lightning like plasma

I mean that would be some kind of high range and high-level airbending since starts are mainly made of gases such as hydrogen, helium.

I was just saying this topic to someone on the last video you made.

Heat is requested for us to change the aggregate state of things but it can be done the other way around. If you can control the distance between the molecules u can change the state without adding heat, heat will be the product of the process.

What if instead of all them being mixed what if they can control the molecules making them move faster thus heating up whatever element they can. So water freezing is just slowing down the molecules and steam is speeding them up. Earth become lava when heated but it's more difficult for them to move those molecules compared to water. Fire is plasma making it the odd ball out and that's why they have the ability to conjure lighting and explosions.

You are absolutely right, because i don’t think bending is all genetic. An earth bender can make quick sand and turn rocks into sand as well so... them rapidly heating the earth can make lava appear (that too has always been my thoughts on that ) water benders even from a young age can bend ice, turn water into ice and vice versa it is an inherent skill all water benders have and their environment aids that too but you can see that the foggy swamp people can ice bend too which suggests that it’s inherent so a water bender having freeze breath is just them ice bending on a much lower scale because it’s basically freezing the water molecules in their breath and the water vapor in the air surrounding their breath to have grater effects

Iroh said he discovered lightning generation by using fire like water bending and exploring water bending

Fire itself is a form of plasma so it makes sense that lightning bending is a sub element of fire

Ice bending is a technique in which the bender adjust the pressure/temperature of the water. On the other hand, lava bending is a mixed trait, it's hereditary.

you can control the temperature of the element using pressure. they aren’t firebending to make steam or metal bending, just changing the pressure of the element

If anything, lightning bending is not lightning per say, but refined heat, turning the air into plasma and directing it, like the pure form of fire bending. But that's just my thoughts on it.
