Avatar's Eywa - A Dangerous Hive Mind Alien

Ойын-сауық

Biologically sentient Eywa, also called the All-Mother or Great Mother, is the sole divinity of Pandora and the Na'vi. The Na'vi believe that after death, everything returns to Eywa, who maintains the delicate balance of Pandora's ecology. Like a network, she links all living things, from plants to animals. Eywa is limited in her vision because she is a living thing and cannot see outside her ecology. She can't make sense of what's happening on Pandora without the Na'vi translating for her. But is she just that or is there a darker more sinister side to this seemingly biological super computer, this super organism, an intelligent hive mind that controls every organism in the planet as if they were cells in her gigantic body.

I honestly haven't given much thought to what Eywa is, but this raises some interesting possibilities. Now that we know Kiri has a strangely powerful connection to Eywa (and was likely conceived by Eywa), it is possible that Kiri is essentially Eywa's Avatar, so to speak.

Avatar is actually a 40k prequel with Eywa being the proto Tyranid hivemind. By 40k Eywa has consumed its host galaxy of biomass, and now seeks out the Astronomicon of the 40k galaxy, not to consume it but to mate with it. I bet it's gonna be revealed in the future movies the navi used to be a advanced race like humanity, but due to pollution like on earth or some other reason they decided to give up technology and go back to being hunter gatherer tribes. The interconnected ecosystem is a result of their once advanced bioengineering, which even though they are primitive now allows them to interface with the wildlife as well as gives them access to a planet sized supercomputer that they, as grace says, can upload and download information to, as well as allow a super intelligence such as Eywa to monitor the planet and make sure they don't develop technology again. Eywa can also act as a defense mechanisms against any aliens that would threaten to interfere with this ecosystem, since it can command all the creatures on the planet to attack them. Unobtanium was probably originally synthesized by the na'vi too.

This is very plausible, however I do believe Eywa to be mostly benevolent. Even though she maintains "balance" in a somewhat forceful way, she compensates via reincarnating those who died and storing their minds so they can essentially have a very pleasant and comfortable afterlife. I think Eywa will be key to integrating humans into Pandora in a better way while also saving Earth. She's the only one powerful enough to interact on even footing with the humans.

So then do all humans need to be exterminated because we are oppressing the cells in our body then? I don’t agree with the sense that the creator of this video compared eywa to the flood. The difference between eywa and the flood is that the flood completely mutilates and destroys organisms to add to its biomass while eywa merely assimilates organisms to its biomass without mutilating them. And the flood aggressively tries to spread its spores as well and we don’t see that type of aggression from eywa. (Yet).

The fact that Eywa can control all of the planet's life and use them like puppets to fulfill her goals seems scary. Even when done for the "right" thing, I don't believe that it should be praised by the Navi nor the sky people. Because she probably has some power on them too. It's like a dictator that strips people of their liberties for his own satisfaction and well-being (and makes them believe this benefits them too), but on a god supercomputer kind of level. If Eywa turns out to be the bad guy of the story, this franchise has the potential of becoming an alien horror masterpiece, a 1984 on a beautiful space jungle. I am in for something like that.

I don't see how Eywa is immoral. Even if she is, I do not think it matters much. She represents nature based on INTERCONNECTEDNESS; Where all life, no matter how inherently conflicting the way be (like predators and prey), all share something together. To me, nature has an inherent regulating quality needed for harmony. Even death is a part of this because of rebirth. Morality is a mainly human concept. Are the hiveminds of ants and bees evil because they don't have a sense of individuality? "It's like a dictator that strips people of their liberties for his own satisfaction and well-being (and makes them believe this benefits them too)." What people don't understand about Pandora is that the ecosystem isn't natural. Thousands of years ago, the Na'vi were an incredibly advanced race. They genetically engineered the entire planet into an artificial intelligence, designed to run it all. Basically, an ecological Skynet. This worked so efficiently that the Na'vi no longer needed technology of their own, and gradually forgot that it was technology at all.

Another thing that this video reminds me of is Guyver bio-booster armor series. In that series the craters of The giver unit and humanity traveled in ships that were pure organic matter with one control metal controlling the ship. What if Eywa was some kind of intergalactic seed that landed on Pandora and created the environment. It could have been some kind of ark that was sent from a dune population to keep their civilization alive in some form. It seems that Eywa also have the capability to modify a species in a different environment condition. If anyone remembers the movie "Evolution" from the same creators of Men in Black, it kind of reminds me of that as well where a organism artificially grew itself in the desert.

This raises some interesting questions. Eywa absorbed knowledge from Grace and Jake and saw their memories of Earth, human culture, what is the goals of the RDA and humanity, Earth biology, human technology and even knowledge about space travel. , the Solar System, the Alpha Centauri System and Pandora's location in the Universe. Essentially learned about Life the Universe and Everything Else. What will this intelligence do with all this knowledge? Will he seek an agreement with Humanity perhaps?

The 3 laws are the most sus part of this. The Na'vi have not invented metals. How did Eywa obtain the concept in the first place? It is intelligent but no matter how smart something is, it needs ways of obtaining information and interacting with its environment. It's not a hive mind in the traditonal sense but more of a omniscent God-dictator as if someone interpreted "mother nature" literally. I don't agree with aggression and violence on the human's side but someone really needs to free the sentient and intelligent Na'vi from this magic dictator.

Well I think since Eywa IS essentially the planet itself in a way she would know her composition or the precursors to the Navi used to use metals and had advanced society’s, which resulted in what earth has become in 2170, so they changed their ways to be more primitive to prevent this

This was my first thought after seeing the movie as well. And probably the reason why mankind is ruled by a megacorporation turned de-facto government in the setting, or else the premise doesn't work. After all, if humanity had an actual somewhat competent government, run by people who worry about pesky things like national security and who are actually capable of strategic thought, they would have spent all but five minutes figuring out what they were actually dealing with, how dangerous it really was, and what to do about it. The potential threat might even have justified simply nuking the whole planet from orbit, or barring that, at the very least putting Pandora under blokade/quarantine permanently. But that wouldn't be much of a movie, so just like in the Alien franchise we need humanity to be run by a bunch of corporate morons who have never had to think or plan ahead for anything beyond the next quarterly report.

Eywa doesn't really care about the Na'vi once you think about it. When the rda landed she could've stopped them when they first started strip-mining the place but she didn't even after the Na'vi were being killed and the destruction of Hometree the ONLY time where she actually intervenes is when they try to destroy the tree of souls (AKA a part of her overall being) she doesn't seem to help anyone unless it effects her and in the second movie this continues even after and entire section of the jungle is INCINERATED the flora&fauna never do anything to the CLEARLY hostile humans unless they enter the territory of the TOS. In the ocean she still does nothing to help with the Tulkun hunts. But if the rda were attacking the cove of ancestors? It would be an aquaman 2019 situation and the "Tulkun Way" would be thrown out the window.

I think what a lot of people in this comment section are missing is that Eywa is a literal (with a capital G) God. She is in a way very similar to a supercomputer but the Na'vi religion is in fact very real. Grace's arc in the first movie solidifies my argument as to why she's not just an interesting biological phenomenon. Looking at this through a scientific lens is cool because it makes us question what we really think of as God but it's the same trap Jake and the other humans fell into in the first movie. They call the Na'vi "primitive" and "dumb" because they don't understand the complex relationship they have with Eywa. It's easy to dismiss this as "Oh religion dumb science good" because that's what we've been trained to think about the Religion/Science discussion. We've been accustomed to tearing down religious hogwash and we do the same every time we hear the word religion. The problem is that this is a different type of perspective of religion so applying the same logic as we did to the idea of a Christian God or any others like him is illogical since we're dealing with a different philosophy. Eywa is a written manifestation of Gaia. Gaia and the Christian God are two different entities. You can't prove or disprove Gaia's existence because she's not a material presence she only expresses herself through material beings. She's more like a concept, you can't debate the existence of a concept because it just is. Everything is Gaia and everything we do is an expression of her. As opposed to our old pal God who is a being that has dominion and power over us, giving us the moral authority to do whatever we want which is why humans are invading Pandora. The humans don't think that they're in the wrong because humans didn't think they were wrong in the conquest of the new world and the genocide of the indigenous. In a similar way, this same thing bleeds over to this new society of humans who have replaced God with money (which is basically what we are right now), they can't stop because corporate interest needs Pandora. Parker (even though he's the highest authority on the human side) still has to answer to someone upstairs. Knowing this changes the whole perspective of the movie as what Avatar essentially asks is for us to stop looking at religion through a scientific lens and to start viewing it through a spiritual one. We are hurting our brothers and sisters of Gaia (flora, fauna, and the whole planet itself) by assuming everything belongs to us and we have the moral right in taking it, we don't.

James Cameron has spoken extensively about the movies’ roles in the green initiative, speaking of the importance of caring for earth and more specifically our dying natural systems. To claim that James is going to turn the all loving Eywa, who is supposed to help life prosper into a she devil is completely against the overarching message of the film.
