    Ironically the 45 minutes of deleted scenes from this movie has a whole lot more character development than the original movie. Mix them together and we would've end up with a movie we deserved to have, but time adjustments of course had to ruin that. Have the studios figured out that Lord of the Rings are really long movies and yet are awesome to watch? I wouldn't mind a extended 4 hour version edition of Avatar because there was so much we could've gotten into that world in that time.

The original music was a mix of cultures blended to be unique in a way no human had ever heard but Cameron felt the alien music was too alien sounding. My biggest problem with Avatar was that they deliberately left out a key concept, something which was later written into an in-universe style book on Pandora. Humans originally went to Pandora not to harvest unobtanium, but to gather plants that feed on chemicals poisonous to Earth plants. Why? To remedy pollution. Humans didn't go as conquerors, but were asking for help, and the Na'vi refused, kinda violently. Unobtanium was discovered later. If they left this in, it would have made such a good idea: does the ends justify the means? Is Humankind allow to destroy a civilization to save its own? Is Humankind allow to exist if it screwed everything up? Also, from a classic trope from Star Trek: are the Na'vi, a stagnating civilization, allowed to exist? They didn't evolve past hunter-gatherers, while literally sitting on "building material" that defies the laws of physics. They refuse cooperation with another civilization, not recognizing the potential benefits. And no, they made Dances with Wolves, with blue cat people. Such wasted potential...

  • @travislyonsgary

    @travislyonsgary

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hm, I would slightly disagree on the stagnation thing since honestly looking at cultures like that generally falls into ethnocentrism in anthropology as you frankly can't know what is actually advanced just by looking at your culture. I would also note that they are very much using a material that isn't defying the laws of physics, or at least their planet is since the material seems to be what is allowing it to make the various connections between trees. So rather obvious reason why they have no desire to give it up as it would legitimately hurt most of their way of life in a fundamental way. I also don't really recall the plant bit unless you mean where there were a few explorers at first before the corporation sent a full mission there?

    Studio Ghibli is one of the best examples of world building. Every movie has at least one or two scenes of a character with little to no talking but instead opting to show the audience some small aspect of how that world is interacted with especially with their technology. Characters are constantly interacting with their world, machines and environment as if it is what they have known their whole life. Their worlds not only feel lived in but shaped as naturally as our world has to humanities technology, habits and cultures. Spirited Away is the exception not the rule with a character that is thrust into a world that is not hers. Which helps to make not only her more relatable but is borderline necessary in a world that is so dream like. Howls moving castle is a bit of mix with Sophie learning the rules of the moving castle but those rules come into play naturally as plot devices after they are introduced. The best world-built worlds characters exist in their worlds and the directing is done as if an invisible camera is there to capture the best moments.

    fella monacci Ehh... Idk. I could buy that if it wasn’t for the creepy hair tentacles lol. It’s a very bizarre design for such a broad concept. If it was more something like touching each other’s foreheads, which they even have it as one of the shots of the guy and the girl before having sex. Like the whole “Pandora is all connected spiritually” and it’s left unclear if it’s the Avatar connecting to the girl or the guy’s human spirit doing it. And you could have the guy trying to connect to the animal by headbutting, which would be funny and also show how it’s not supposed to be such a violent act.

    I thought the reason Jake had to go into the body was fine. They literally grew a body for his twin brother; they had to grow bodies with their own genetic sequences mixed with that of the natives so it would work for them. HIs brother died. They didn't want it to go to waste since they spent the time and money making the body, and Jake is still a soldier who can follow orders, just isn't a scientist like his brother. So they asked Jake if he wanted to do it; they didn't force him. He didn't want to let his brother's work go to waste so he did it. No one is kind about it, either; everyone at the beginning is pretty much saying he's not worth the body because he's just a soldier and knows nothing about what he's actually doing. It's not the same as just 'making someone play football because the uniform fits' where anyone could have taken the role with a similar body size. THis was attuned to his brother's DNA and thus his as well since they're twins. It made sense to me. The message of the movie is pretty heavy handed but I did like that the reason the other scientists weren't making much progress is because they were scientists and Jake is a soldier with a different mindset, so they accept him.

    While you are absolutely right about why the movie deems it reasonable(it tries to tell a story), it still is weird/illogical. They are having this very important mission(infiltration/missionary work) that more or less rides on 1 guy due to his talents. The guy dies, but instead of building a new avatar for someone who would be equally talented, to ensure as high a succes rate as possible, they call for his brother and asks him to do it(btw, didnt they have to wait for Jake to arrive on Pandora? How long did that take, I wonder?). Putting Jake in that avatar was a complete gamble that could have costed them the entire operation(him dying the first night alone). It is only because of movie plot that this actually works.

    @@fendelphi Yeah but you're forgetting the fact that making those Na'Vi bodies are probably expensive as hell. We don't know how much it cost the government of that time period to make those bodies for them. For all we know, the price of making those bodies could've been three to five times more expensive to make another one, while disposing of the one they can't use, versus just flying Jake's butt over there to use the suit because he's a closer DNA match. Plus, we saw how the military flying legions of soldiers to Pandora, so it's safe to assume that it would be cheaper to bring Jake over because they were probably going to ship more soldiers to that planet anyways, so what's one more passenger going to cost them versus making another clone Na'Vi body? Plus, we saw towards the climax of the film that the military wasn't opposed to using deadly force if things went south, so I'm pretty sure their line of thinking was "Well we can save money by just having Jake fly up here to Pandora. And if things go south, then we can just get what we want by deadly force."

    To be honest, you don’t even ha e to remember all the movies that used this cliche to know it’s a clichés. There are things that I think you know are clichés, and it goes without saying which ones used it. To be fair, Ratatouille did do something really good with a premise that I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of in a lot of cartoons or cartoon shorts, but man was it creative with it. It’s not super easy to remember which ones, but even if it is really general, it’s not like one should not know when it’s done to death, right? Like I said, this isn’t badmouthing Ratatouille, that one was brilliant, but this is more just kinda voicing my thoughts on people trying to defend this cliché, like they somehow forget that these clichés ares done to death and say because the storyline is technically not 100% the same, it’s too general to call it a cliché. Guys, it’s an underdog story!! A cartoon underdog story!!! It’s still been done before!! Ratatouille isn’t good because it’s 100% original or even a new concept that not one film has done before!

    14:04 of course subjective, but with the concept of Eywa I definitely wanted to know more about Pandora. A living hive mind connecting everything through nature, all plants and organisms, and the people are aware of it, connected to it spiritually, that's pretty cool. The movie doesn't focus on it, just establishes the basic premise of the basic world and goes with it. I bet everything will be way more fleshed out in the sequels. That's the impression I get anyway. Like Avatar was just the basic ground layer, introduction to an entirely new franchise and step in CGI, digital theme park ride that will lead to much more. You can only do so much at once. Also 17:00 "Unlike fanciful designs in which weapons were integrated into limbs, the AMP suit is a multi-purpose machine, able to duplicate all functions of the infantry soldier. Since soldiers spend much of their time loading and unloading, and performing other tasks besides operating weapons, it was determined that the AMP suit needed the same functionality as a human: two legs, two arms, and highly dexterous hands. This allows not only a wide range of functions, but allows the suit to operate a variety of weapons systems." Built in guns are silly 20:28 The Avatar program is protected by basically the UN so it can't be cut, he doesn't necessarily pay for it out of a desire to further research, it just has to be funded due to government support, so this scene also makes sense.

    In actuality if they wanted a mech to have a gun that big it would have to be held in more then one hand, and also the fact that its held allows for the mech to be used in more logistic uses outside of combat. Many people who known little pretend the obvious thing is to have the gun be apart of the actual mech, but in reality that only makes sense if you have a very narrow idea of mecha.

    Hearing him talk about world building makes me want to hear him talk about Dark Crystal. The movie is memorable. Perhaps it’s a bit slow, and there was too much world to fit into one movie. But it had enough comics and books and later on, a TV Show, that garner’s attention, and gives it more room to flesh out it’s stories, world, and characters. Avatar doesnt have that luxary. It would SEEM like a modern Dark Crystal movie, dynamic world meh storytelling (although to be fair, the Dark Crystal had MUCH better villains) but nobody really picked up on it and gave it some more oomph. TLDR: Rewatching Avatar made me realize how much Dark Crystal succeeds in aspects that it failed, and I want Doug to talk about Dark Crystal if he hasnt already. EDIT: (6/5/2020) Oh my gosh, look at all those likes! I'm glad that there are people who agree with me about Dark Crystal! Thank you!

    I’d argue that it _is_ creative in its own way. The theme/intent of ATLA is to be an altered fantastical version of earth or “our world” with many of the animals and human cultures being a mix of what we see in the reality to create something different and familiar at the same time. Meanwhile James Camerons avatar is meant to take place on a completely different planet with extraterrestrial life forms which is why some of the Pandora fauna looking so earth-like can be a little strange at times (though some look more distinct than others and the upcoming game has creatures that look even more alien). The Navi also tend to _really_ stand out compared to the rest of them almost uncannily so, it would at least fit better if they had 4 arms like the tharks from John carter but I think there was something about animation constraints during production? idk

    I was 8 years old when this movie came out in theaters. At first I thought it was going to be a film adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" directed by James Cameron, I was wrong 😅. When I find out that it wasn't, I was really disappointed... And then "The Last Airbender" came out the following year and we all know how that turned out. Terrible... M. Night Shyamalan made a crime against nature... By making that movie in the first place. 🌊⛰️🔥💨
