Avatar 2 Interview: Bailey Bass & Jamie Flatters on Tsireya & Neteyam

The moon of Pandora has welcomed a number of new faces since 2009’s Avatar. In the years between the first film and James Cameron’s highly-anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) adopted Sigourney Weaver's Kiri and had three children of their own including Neteyam playing by Jamie Flatters (The School for Good and Evil).
In The Way of Water, the "sky people" return to Pandora after over a decade of peace. This time around, they don't just want Pandora's resources. They want to colonize the entire moon. When Jake specifically is targeted as a hurdle in achieving that goal, his family is forced to seek refuge in the reef village of the Metkayina clan. That's where Flatters' Neteyam, Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son, meets Bailey Bass' character, Tsireya, the daughter of the Metkayina leaders, Ronal (Kate Winslet) and Tonowari (Cliff Curtis). Whereas some of the locals take to bullying the Sullys, Tsireya accepts her assignment to teach Neteyam and the other Sully children the Metkayina ways with patience and grace.
Before The Way of Water's theatrical release on December 16th, Collider’s own Perri Nemiroff was able to sit down with Flatters and Bass to talk about their experience working on the film. With so much time having passed since filming began, Bass reflects on playing Tsireya and how much she’s grown as an actress. Bass also discusses what she learned from her on-screen mom, Kate Winslet, while Flatters recalls a special moment he shared with Cliff Curtis in Hawaii.

As a Gen Z kid, I’m honestly excited to see the younger actors in this movie. They seem really talented and I wish them the best.

Bro your gonna die when you see her character. She gave me depression she was so gorgeous, not in a weird way, just in an angelic dreamy vibe feel, she makes me feel warm, and when I see her, it just reminds me how rare it is to find young women like that in this dying world *sigh*
It's weird that Jack Champion is younger than they are when his character is actually the oldest of the children, older than Kiri even.

@@chasehedges6775 Yes, I know that about Trinity, of course, but Jack's age was particularly noted in this interview, Bailey said how she even felt protective of Jack Champion since he is younger than her, though probably only by a year.

@@Hellsing7747 I get it, since there's also a woman in her seventies playing a fourteen-year-old, Jack playing a character who's only slightly older than himself shouldn't seem so weird, but to me it still does.

Need neteyam back
I love both Avatar movies. They are very well. I’m also really happy younger actor’s played in Avatar: The Way of Water. Since I’m a Gen Z kid I was excited for them.

May be that’s what they were going for. All of these imaginary character and sci fi trait names are inspired from different languages and cultures of the world. For example, the golden stuff they collect from the whale like creatures head that is supposed to not age human beings, they call it ‘amrita’. That is actually a real word from sanskrit and still is used in languages like Bangla and Hindi which actually means a liquid that would give someone an ever lasting life. It is also used to indicated the drink from heaven. In the lost ancient arts of alchemy, alchemists used to try to create this substance that would make human beings immortal. So this is very plausible that they might name a water navi as mermaid.

Am I stoopid or is there no interview with the guy who plays Loak? I always see the actors of Natayim and Spider doing interviews but never Loak. Am I missing something??

He’s got anxiety. The kid actors were also told by James that they don’t have to do promotions or interviews if they don’t wish to. Hope he’s ok

child actors are not required to do promotion. It can be included in their contracts that they only do certain appearances. We’ll probably see more interviews from him for future movies. I don’t think anyone has to necessarily worry about his well-being, as it was a decision that would have been made years ago due to how young he was at the time.
