Avalon M-Zero Mount - Full in-depth Review

Ғылым және технология

A full review of the Avalon M-Zero mount after I used it now for 2 months doing Astrophotography with it. A lot of good things to report about this stunningly beautiful equatorial mount made in Italy, but also a few points that need to be considered before buying it.

    I didn't know anybody made a no flip polar mount! Thanks! 😁

    Like you I really want no meridian flip and for some projects I have in queue it's essential. The celestron fork is tempting, but one issue commented on in an earlier video of yours was clearance. I really like the look of the avalon but it's not common in the US. Looking forward to more info on your rig!

    Forget Celestron Fork for serious Astrophotography - it is not accurate enough for high focal lengths - I had to learn this painfully. The Avalon mounts are just perfect - Accurate, beautiful, reliable - could not wish for more. You can order them directly by Avalon and they sometimes even have some reduced price offers on their homepage

    I’ve had an m-zero for ~18months now (and like you I also have an Eagle). I have dropped the arm down 1 position from where you have it, and can easily balance both a WO GT71 (which I think is similar to your setup) and a heavier Epsilon 130. You should find if you do this you can remove the counterweight entirely for the lighter rig. Give it a try! I love my m-zero, but some negatives: - As you said: the knobs to tighten the clutches are too small - it makes it really hard to tighten and I have to use a strap wrench to really lock them down. I have the losmandy dovetail on the top and it’s perfect. I wish I could take the knob from that and put it on the clutches. - the altitude dial for polar alignment is awful. It’s sharp on the fingers and really hard to dial in accurately. - contrary to your experience, I’ve had nothing but crashes with the stargo app. To the point where I only use the ascom version (launched from Nina). If I open the stargo main app, I’m guaranteed a crash at some point in the night. Btw, Avalon just released a motorised PA mount. 1000E - expensive. Looking forward to seeing your review of it soon! 😊 Clear Skies from Australia!

    Thanks - great info!!!! Kind of odd that it crashes but at the end all I need the software for is saving the home position, and this can be one with the ASCOM driver, so no harm done ;-) And yes, this universal PA system looks extremely interesting - I guess that could be a huge success.....

    I'm a complete beginner, no prior astro experience (just standard photography) and guess what my first mount is - this one 😜 I'm crazy yes, but I thought if I'm going into this I want to get the mount correct at the start 😁 and not worry about future upgrading.

    @@viewintospace I'm also now adding to my new set up the WO GT71 with FLAT6AIII 0.8x reducer, EAF, ASIair +, ASI294MM Pro with EFW & Chroma 3nm filters (LRGB, SOH), and OAG with ASI220MM mini. I saw 2 days ago that someone local was selling the ASI294MM with Chroma 3nm filters and thought why not get a head start on the never ending ladder of gear and go straight to mono camera & narrowband 🤪

    @@celts88-78 While this is a good strategy, to have so much new equipment might easily overwhelm you. Every one of these parts will have a million of challenges and when you have no clue from where is issue is coming from, it might drive you insane. Move most of this equipment in a cupboard and start with one of two parts, until you are sure you can manage them. Then start adding another one - and so on....

    @@viewintospace I actually agree with you, but am lucky that the person who I got the camera and filters from has offered to come down and walk me through how it all goes together. I'm not expecting to just pick it up like normal photography, press a button and 2 seconds later I have a picture. Getting the gear working together is only one part of multiple phases, all the way to the difficult stage of processing and putting all the shots together to make one final photo. I'm retired now so do have more time on my hands, but that also doesn't mean frustration won't happen. It will happen from the start and constantly all the way through, but if I can treat it as a challenge and every minor step I take forward will have to reward myself with a pat on the back (especially during the multiple times when I also take 3 steps backwards). Buying good equipment is no easy answer to then understanding how it works 😉 I follow Celtic FC (from Glasgow) and Fergus McCann who saved the Club in the early '90s when they nearly went bankrupt once said “Money doesn’t guarantee success, but no money guarantees no success!”. All I'm doing is the same with having good equipment won't guarantee me success either, but having bad equipment will guarantee me no success 😜

    Grüzi Sacha, have you ever tested Kstars ? I only use this software because it can control any and all aspects of my astro setup: mount, camera, focuser, filter wheel, dome, ... you name it. I think you might be in for a surprise !

    No I haven't. There are many of these workflow software around and my question would be - what can it do better than NINA while also offering the full capability that NINA does? Because honesty, for that it is free NINA is just extremely good and all my needs are covered... But I once wanted to look into other softwares and compare them and if I will do that then Stars will be one of them.

    great mount for sure. I made some 20 minutes exposures absolutly perect. . I can even do 2 minutes with my mak 180, 2700mm focal length, it s crazy. you are rightn , not easy to change in middle of the night. But you can buy an extension for the counterweight bar. and an heavier counterweight . Strange problem you had with that plastic knob. i can lock the mount without any force

  • @viewintospace

    @viewintospace

    Жыл бұрын

    The issue with locking the mount I would assume is really in the 0.1mm area - depending on how tight the fit is the pressure of the knob will be enough or not. I read of other people who had the same issue, but it is definitely not everybody. Anyway, small issue and easy resolution....

    @@viewintospace Tak is good, but interestingly, Esprit is as good. So one Esprit 80, and another is Esprit 150. Yeh, you will need appropriate mount. It is not recommendation, it is inevitable move that you will make. You just don’t know it is as yet. You already tested Italian mount, so your next mount could be Italian as well.
