On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

A very long time ago, I worked at Hughes Aircraft in Tucson. Among one of the many systems we made (mostly missiles - AIM54C, Roland, Tow2, the *original* AMRAAM, Mavericks), we also made ARBS - the Angle Rate Bombing System that was installed in the Harrier. The only US unit to operate the Harrier was the USMC, and the mission was all about close air support for the Marines on the ground. These Marine pilots took their jobs *very* seriously. Well, along about 1983, Hughes was having some production issues with ARBS, and it was seriously pissing off a Marine general. So, he had one of his pilots fly a Harrier to the Hughes parking lot for a motivational speech. He gave his little intro then popped open the front end of the Harrier to show a concrete block in place of ARBS. He pointedly mentioned the concrete block did not help him in his mission. We had a little more zing after that.

The gun on the harrier cannot be shot while nozzles rolled because it uses bleed air from the engine to actuate the gun. While nozzles are rolled bleed air goes to the RCS shutters for hovering Mobility. There just isn’t enough bleed air from the engine to feed both the systems which is why you get one or the other. 👌🏼👌🏼 (VMA-231 mechanic)

This is a very abnormal fight (DCS). There are alot of lessons to be learned from the Tomcat perspective. First, try to know what your fighting. That dictates how you enter the merge and then how to push the fight you want to have using the advantages afforded you. Second, be aggressive: this Tomcat had many advantages in the vertical space to keep the Harrier nose high which takes away his pitch potential. Bit frustrating to watch.

The A in AV-8B stands for Attacker, just like it does for the A-10, so yes. It is placed between the A-7 and the YA-9 in the attacker numbering line. With the AV-8B + variant, the Harrier's DMT gets replaced by a radar, giving it a better fighting chance in dogfights, but we have the NA (Night Attack) variant in DCS, not the + (RAZBAM pls)

The "wires" you mention are actually called MDC (miniature detonator cord) and it's inclusion in all RAF fast jets is why protocol for RAF pilots is to put clear visor down every flight. The most common injury during ejection is called MDC Splatter, when the explosion of the canopy creates "perspex" shrapnel that has a propensity to fly back into the crew's faces, blinding them. Goose wouldn't have died if they'd had MDC on their canopy!

Round 3 is definitely a win for you.The way the Tomcat was maneuvering to get the shot also put it on a collision course. A different trajectory would have meant a miss when going for the shot. This reminded me of that video not to long ago, where it was 1 to 1 (you were in the MIG 29, I think) and your missile caught up to the other guy after you were hit. Since he was too low to eject, that was still a win for you.

DCS seriously needs to fix this critical bug of F-14 instantly vapourizing when touching Harrier. 🙂 Great video as always.

Well besides the 3rd round I was pretty impressed with how the first fight went! To be fair to the Harrier though I think you should only do Fox 2 fights or fights you could actually get into in a real world scenario. Still I was impressed with your handling of the Harrier, nicely done! Fun to watch as well. It would be interesting to see how a 2v2 or 2v1 fight with Fox 2 missiles would go and would be fun to arch! Thanks for making and sharing this and great job!🤙

That ending was so out of left field but funny as hell. Do a Harrier Vs. F-22 video. I know it will probably be a montage of you getting gunned from six o'clock but it will still be funny to watch.

I think recall reading somewhere that the Harrier was once put through a series of "test dogfights" with other top of the line fighters as part of a presentation of what the Harrier could do and that it ultimately won those tests. Though, from the way it was worded, I get the sense that when these "test dogfights" were done, the Harrier was such a new aircraft that certain things that it could do were so new to those it was tested against that they were tricked into overshooting while the Harrier pilot had some general idea on what the planes he was facing could do and thus set up that overshoot. Thus, it'd be a trick that would really only work once or twice and wouldn't be sustained over time.

I don't remember the name of the book but when I was a kid I clearly remember a book in the library showing a Harrier was able to flip the nozzels in a dog fight to reverse then shoot the enemy. I was like 8 but still didn't believe that was possible lol

Not sure if I just missed it but a tip for turning in the harrier is to not actually have the nozzles all the way down but at about 20-40 degrees which will significantly increase the turn rate wile still not allowing you to just stall straight away.

Missiles on 1 +7 look so weird. RAF have 1a and 7a (extra pylons by the outrigger) and no guns. The MDC (wire on the canopy) is mild detonating cord. Doesnt always work so there are horns on the ejection seats that punch through the canopy just incase.

Quite literally pulled the UNO reverse card on his gun kill there at end! I remember seeing the Harrier demonstrate at an airshow when I was a kid. It was pretty awesome! Also got to see the MiG-29 right around the collapse of the USSR, could have been the Su-27 not sure. Pops was in the air force at Elmendorf AFB and back then air shows were a yearly event by gods I loved every second of every single one.

It would be interesting to see GS in both planes, bc he typically dominates the fights regardless of the plane he chooses. That would give a better indication of what the planes are capable of.

That’s one way to win a fight. Just be slow enough and get in the bandit’s way forcing him to crash into you midair right as you eject milliseconds before impact
