i entered 'The Voice' here in Belgium and when i heard my audition on tv couple months later i also detected autotune which also made me sound more of key at one point or 2 then i knew i originally sang, i was super bummed.. even the battles were autotuned. then the liveshows being 100% live and no autotune which ofcourse led to everyone thinking what happend to the good voices they heard on the auditions and battles since they didn't sound the same anymore -_- My audition is on my channel for those wo would like to hear it..

I always used to refer to auto tune as “Way too crisp” there’s this harshness to it, and I feel like referring to it as metallic was a really good way to describe that. Auto tune is good for refining things, but I feel like we’ve become way too expectant of things being so processed, that they’re taking the humanity out of the music.

Joey Arthur Zooberry So, you come into the comments section, you see a true rarity of the internet: A stranger paying a stranger a compliment, but instead of just leaving well enough alone, you decide you have to take a steaming dump over two people in one hit? Nice. But, if you’re going to be pointing out mistakes in grammar, I’d like you to know that “couple grammar mistakes” is inherently grammatically incorrect. Also, sentences finish with either a full stop or an exclamation mark where I come from.

Auto-tuning seems to be the vocal equivalent of Photoshop, it's now the expected norm. It's really sad that the media/entertainment industry wants to eradicate all signs of human error. Missed notes and imperfect singing can actually add emotional realness to a performance. No wonder kids today think singers from the 60s-80s aren't that good 🤣

Adel Simackova Doubt it. Bad singers are really easy to find, they don't need to use bad autotuning to make them sound worse. I think it's the other way around, they're using accurate autotuning (except in rare occasions when it isn't working correctly), which helps the lower level singers, but makes the really _good_ singers sound less good.

EDIT: This is my most liked comment ever guys thank you so much!! omg hahaha Hi, professional Audio Engineer here! Here's some info that might help clear some things up. First of all they've been able to tune vocals live way longer than most people think. in 1998 Antares Audio Technologies incorporated invented Auto-Tune giving you the ability to tune vocals in the studio. In 1999 they made a version for live use and it has been steadily increasing in popularity since. Auto-Tune is a digital signal processor that can subtly or harshly snap the waveform of any audio signal that passes through it to a desired key signature which the user sets... IN ENGLISH: Audio look like squiggly lines on a computer. A very famous example is The Arctic Monkeys "AM" album cover. The more out of tune something is the more squiggly the line. Auto-Tune makes the lines a little bit more straight and it can also completely straighten or flatten it out. When you flatten the lines completely it sounds robotic. The auto-tune used on the girl at 5:52 is a perfect example of this. It sounds like the rapper Future who is a huge Auto-Tune abuser. Very odd choice for the Mix Engineer to make especially considering Auto-Tune wasn't invented yet when the original song (Otis Redding - Hard To Handle) was recorded. Hope that helps!!

It just sucks because people who want to get started as a singer hear these perfect and edited vocals and feel like they will never be able to compete or make it anywhere musically. Yes, singing takes hard work, training, stage presence, and talent, but I think this makes things unrealistic and unreachable, when in reality, hard work will take you somewhere

If you can’t hear it, another thing to note is when it goes from sounding like a normal live performance to randomly sounding almost compressed. When you record vocals and apply auto tune/pitch corrector, isolate the vocals and turn up the volume, and you almost hear a faint, unnatural crackly sound.

singers didn't have auto-tune back then, a voice can vary while singing live, this gives it the character and the feeling. Autotune makes it sound cold and robot like, it's okay when you're into techno or hip hop, but very bad in classical music, Rock or Metal.

It makes absolutely no sense to use auto-tune on a singer. That's what they're signed on to do and what they get paid for. If they can't do it then they shouldn't be singing. I think more often than not it isn't the singers fault. It's the producers and audio engineers thinking they need to "perfect" it instead of allowing the little vocal nuances of a singer which makes it more unique, personal and REAL.
