This was an experiment purely for fun and doesn't fully replicate a real-life scenario as it is of course done in a flight simulator. And results would vary greatly depending on weather conditions, the airport, aircraft type and so much more To anyone who wants to know more about autolandings, autolandings use onboard instruments and ground-based systems to guide an aircraft to a safe landing without direct input from the pilots. It increases safety during low-visibility conditions and reduces pilot workload, but pilots are still required to monitor the system and take over if necessary. This isn't a common procedure and almost all landings are manual

They put intentional tolerable variation in the autoland, because it initially was so accurate, it was building up lumps of rubber on the runway, from touching down exactly at the same spot. During testing they would have to go scrape the runway.

You can kinda see that the manual landing was a higher overall sink rate as Humans have a case of get-there-itis, and then lifting up. I think either is sufficient, as long as each are prepared throttle up and do a go-around. Maybe with the nose up, its faster to climb out. The best philosophy to a landing is not landing at all.

It's intentionally designed that way, to get positive activation of the shock struts, which need to compress before the speed brakes and thrust reversers will activate. They can make autoland grease the landing everytime, but that would be riskier in many wind conditions.

@@timcorbett9629 100% not only can you have stability issues if it's too light in different wind conditions, not compressing the shock on some aircraft like a bombardier Q400 can add serious wobble to the strut which can overtime fatigue the entire thing to failure. Tires also, you can have blowouts easier when it's just kissing the runway in comparison to putting some force into it hitting the runway.

I think the human landing was very good 👍 I am not a pilot, so keep that in mind: I did notice that the autopilot used a lower degree glide slope, which seemed to make the landing a tad softer. You can get a sense of what I mean by looking at the first clip of the short and comparing the two planes location relative to the runway, then watch their descent rates. The manual landing appeared to have a higher sink rate than the autopilot. I don't think that if I, as a passanger, were asked to judge which was the better landing, I don't think I would have been be able to tell the difference, honestly. I certainly wouldn't have known one was manual vs autopilot if I were a passanger and hadn't been primed to know one was autopilot. 👍 When you're comparing yourself to autopilot....it seems like an artist comparing their art against a printer! Sure, maybe the printer did, arguably, a slightly better job (depending on the metric used and even then, if you're good enough at art to be comparing yourself with a printer.... you're skill level is already stunningly high! To me, thats kind of what you're doing, which is impressive!
