We decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to make a difference to the Earth then we were going to have to stop talking about it and do it!
We sold all our stuff, got rid of the mortgage, sold our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true. After traveling in our van we settled here in the west of Ireland. A place that has always been special to us. Annie is half Irish and since we met 13 years ago and she took me to meet her family i fell in love with Ireland too.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to work hard, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of permaculture and creating a way of life that sings to us. One where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

"Establish a pecking order..." very good 👏😂 It is cool how satisfying and addictive making your own compost is, eh? Although I have never down so with the family's poo, I would say black and crumbly compost is good to go 👍😉

This was lovely… I laughed so much at the ladies in the chicken enclosure 😊. Cute hens. And making compost and enriching soil… I get it, find it extremely satisfying as well!
Apologies I don’t comment often enough… but love then channel and your videos. Amazing job on the hen coup.

Don’t worry that run is to keep chickens in not predators out. That run is out now and they are in an electric fence with dogs out the whole time they are out then they are locked away during the evening. The coop is predator proof

Gorgeous happy chooks! How are the potatoes coming along? I planted a bunch at the same time that I chitted (and worried that my novice chitting had killed them) but they started sprouting in the past couple of days. Yay. I'm amazing how fast the leaves grow once they've broken the soil level!

They are doing well. We mounded ours up 2 times. We need to get our main crop in the ground as we are a bit behind
Humanure = black gold ❤❤ In the early years here I used to have a long drop toilet in a three-sided shed facing the bush (Australia). As the hole under the toilet seat filled up, it took about 12 months, I would dig out the previous hole and move the toilet seat on top of that and used the contents to fertilise the fruit trees and soft fruit bushes in the garden. After being in a covered hole in the ground for 12 months it was just beautiful compost that smelt like fresh dirt. The garden bloomed with the application of this black gold. Added bonus was the number of volunteer tomato plants that would come up. Obviously tomato seeds are not harmed by passing thru the human digestive system. Regarding so called 'compostable' plastics, what they don't tell y9ou is the only way to compost them is in an industrial situation, a home compost system will not do anything to them - it's a bit of a have really!!!! 😊😊😊😊

Black gold indeed :) we have a couple of different toilets before settling on a design for the house. We were going to use it on hedgerows and trees

Hi Bruce, I heard that you should compost human manure for 2 year's and that you only use on fruit trees and the likes, not on our veg. But if you read that book did it not say that in it? Just wondered, I heard that book was great, very inspiring. Great work love the chicken coup. You have all come so far on your homestead. 👍😉🇮🇪☘️Eire

2 years is if you don’t hit compost. If you leave for 2 years then it’s presumed pretty safe but if you aerobically compost them the temperatures kill any potential pathogens, parasites etc. the book is well worth a read even if you weren’t planning on having a compost loo
Well done great coup❤😊

It feels refreshing to see another style of life, and it looks so fun. Im just wondering how do the girls go too school? are they homeschooled or is there a school there?

There are nice schools around but we have home schooled for the last 7 years
Feedomatic is a great addition, same one I have. Coop door looks a good addition too, I'm a little jealous 😂. How did you attach the two layers of mesh on the run? Wasn't super clear in the video. I use a net mending stitch with twine but yours looks tidier. You'll enjoy the hens, great converters of leftovers to eggs, especially with young'uns around.

I just used the wire that it was wrapped in and loop stitched it. The door is awesome. Well worth the investment.
I think the ramp was a good idea when I had chickens they did not like jumping in and out, just keep an eye on when the door opens and closes, dawn and dusk is the time your mostly likely to get a predictor attack.. not nice
@OffGridBruce
Жыл бұрын
I hope we don’t have that happen but I guess it’s always a risk. I have 3 dogs who are out so it would just be the morning I’m vulnerable. We have an electric fence too as a backup
some of those "compostible" containers and such have some nasty forever chemicals in them. You should check it out -search forever chemicals to learn more. Shiny cardboard isn't good either - anything waterproof is a bit suspect.

Judging by the "chicken wire" I se in your video, one would think you do NOT have a predator problem. However, you still may want to "strengthened your chicken wire with a thicker, stronger and a more heavy duty wire that will ensure nothing gets to your chickens

We do have foxes and pine martens. The run is just to contain the hens not protect. We have an electric fence and dogs out. The coop is predator proof so they are locked away at night.

Hello 👋🏽
Do you add anything else to compost toilet? Allow toilet roll? Manufacturers of so called compostable food containers admit themselves that it only works in certain commercial-scale composting, yet more greenwashing nonsense. They do argue it’s still produced from bio material rather than plastic, be interested to know if that makes a difference in landfill.

I throw greens in there, some wood chip and sometimes card. Since having animals we have very little food waste
