I studied this for a while before attempting it. Worked a treat. My garage door opener has a feature that it can power additional low power devices (lights et al). I used this for powering the shelly itself, and worked great. No need to mess with the power adapter. Definitely took some doing to wrap my head around this application, but glad I did. Good work.

I would reverse the logic with magnetic switch - now your doors only counts as open when it is 100% open, but if it gets opened in 99% you would see it as closed, which is bad

Agreed, I would set the reed switch up so that I get an open indication as soon as the door leaves the 100% closed position - anything but fully closed is unsecured

Basically - the logic is knowing if the door is NOT FULLY CLOSED... otherwise it's OPEN - and any amount of "open" is not secure! Last year I used DrZzs solution with a Sonoff SV. But I attached the stationary reed switch to the main rail at the end (near the door), and the magnet onto the moving drive arm bracket. As the door fully closes, the magnet activates the reed switch. As soon as the door moves any amount upward from closed, the magnet moves, changing the reed switch... telling me the door is NOT closed.

Nice and simple video! The idea of attaching a reed switch to the garage chain is pretty brilliant, I have to say :)

I did this in about 5 minutes with a sonoff 4ch when I moved in. Didn’t bother with a sensor since the garage camera was fine. I’ll rework it some day. The benefit of the sonoff was the RF fob.

Great video as usual. This is much better than my cloud myq garage hub which I got when I lost my garage keys. The best part is you can force the garage to close down even if door’s native sensor doesn’t let you (due to bad calibration, dust or locking down a thief;) ). I would add a sensor on garage door itself for complete open/close status. I have been waiting for your sprinkler System video...need to upgrade my dumb sprinkler system.

The addition of the reed switch to know the door status is interesting option but because I only intend to use this wireless app/device within sight of my garage for me there is no need for a reed switch but thanks for letting me know some of the options out there.

Nice video! Personally, though, I would mount the reed as a feedback for door confirmed closed ("ON" at safe position, i.e. closed). Knowing doors are closed are more important than confirmed fully open, imo.

I use two reed switches, one for open and the other for closed. If neither is met within 15 seconds I get an alarm (door stuck).

@@mr.bianchirider8126 Me too :) At each door inside the house I have control-boxes with a D1Mini, a couple of buttons and a red (open) and a green (closed) led for each garage-door. When doors are in 'transit' both leds lights up in turn (best way I can explain it with my somewhat limited English vocabulary). I'm going to borrow your 'door-stuck' alarm, btw. Think I'll even include a 'feedback-fault' (both switches closed at the same time).

Mr. BianchiRider all these people with their fancy “made in the last ten years” garage door openers don’t know how to account for failure. I used a Samsung multisensor and read the orientation readings, with anything shy of shut-vertical being unsecured.

I had a two door unicorn system that broke down, and I had to get an additional opener of recent make. Been trying to figure out how to synchronize everything to work with one set of openers. Seems like I could set up a reed switch at the bottom of the modern door that triggers a button press on the other opener.

Great tutorial. Getting the parts and making a temporary setup were the easy bits. Making it look good in the end and be sure it works before everything was nicely moved out of sight was a bit harder. Nevertheless very happy with the end result.

The hook up + shelly = perfect!

The read switch location there means if the door is partially open, the read switch will show as "closed". A better location would be placed at the other end of the chain so it will only shows "closed" when the door is completely closed. A partially open would consider as "open". Another issue is what if your garage door opener is a screw type?

a better place woud be to put the reed at the top of the frame and the magnet on the door (or for safety: reed far from door frame ex: on ceiling, and magnet on an suport/adapter) Because the chain posicion may change if you unlock and open it manually.

Perfect timing! I just installed the shelly last week hadn't decided on a reed switch yet. Also how you gonna show us this and not show us a cool way to put it into home assistant!? Thank you very much from Colombia, this video helped me automate a gate and the idea of the magnetic switch to detect if it is open or closed is great👍. Thanks to other videos on this channel I have decided to experiment with Home Assistant and I managed to add the button to open the gate, although I can only see the color of the icon change while the app button is active (the equivalent of the blue circle that is activated for 1 second in Shelly Cloud app) but I would like to be able to see the status of the magnetic switch in Home Assistant to know if the gate is closed or open, and maybe change the icon to show open/close door. This can be the subject of another video or an article on your blog. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks again.🙏

I would love to see an update on node-red and this solution as means for an easy step into learning node-red. Such as; sending an alert if door is open and it's late at night AND no activity in the garage.

I have an older Genie garage door opener, so this video was perfect for helping me automate it. Thanks for the great step-by-step walkthrough on how to accomplish this! Got the whole thing set up for ~$20.

I did this today and your instructions were right on the money! My wife is skeptical as to the usefulness, but now I can program the door to always close at sunset, etc. I had to shave down the reed switch and magnet to get it to fit, but no biggie. The biggest trouble is getting the Shelly to communicate, but I eventually got past that hurdle. Thanks for a great little improvement to our 20 year old garage door opener. Is there a way to make a Shelly scene, or an Alexa routine to close the garage door at sunset?

Can this be done with tasmota? If your door is half open your app thinks its closed.. Also I'd be putting the reed switch closed when the door is closed.. just incase your door is half open..

Love your videos. One thing to note on this installation. Putting the reed switch/magnet on the chain will not identify if the garage door is open. Instead, it will identify if the garage door opener chain is in the up or down position. The difference being if you pull the cord to disconnect the garage door opener from the door and open the door manually, having the switch/magent monitoring the chain will not trigger a change in the app (i.e. it will not tell you the garage door is open. Put magnet and switch on the garage door / housing to monitor the garage door and not the opener.

In addition to this, it’s also better to have the switch trigger in the fully closed position versus the fully open position. That way you know the door is actually closed and not in a halfway position.

On a related topic, do you have any recommendations to rehabilitate sensors from an old abandoned wired alarm system? It would be great to use the existing hardwired sensors (doors, windows, PIR, fire) and integrate them into my smart home. Konnected seems to offer a decent solution.

If you know where your Alarm system Box is (mine is in the garage and looks similar to the breaker box) then you can gain access to every wire running to your sensors. You will have to do some testing as most non-working alarm systems may have the wires in place but the company cuts them strategically. Mine happened to leave the main power coming into the box and they just cut some of the output wires to the sensors, so I just had to trace the in-coming power wire and jump it to the device I wanted to us. In my case, I used the old Alarm Siren and a shelly 1pm device so that I have a local alarm that sounds when doors open and the alarm is armed. I may do a video on that on my youtube channel. If that is something you think you would like to see, please let me know.

I did not know those Shelly devices could do 12v. I might have a use for that.

Great video! Never commented before, but I just had to. This is the kind of thing I’ve been looking at for my first smart home project. I currently depend on different clouds for different devices. For example, I currently have the MyQ gateway for the garage door, Nest thermostat, Honeywell TC 2.0 for my alarm, etc. I’d like to begin freeing myself from someone else’s cloud and keep it all in-house. So, although I have Home Assistant, I have very easy integrations with someone else’s clouds. Now I can remove MyQ, add a Shelly relay and then figure out how to take myself out of an outside cloud and run the garage.

Be careful, some of the other commenters said this doesn't work with the MyQ garage doors. If you have the hub you might be ok, but the built in ones might have issues with this method. They do make a homekit hub that is supposed to remove cloud dependencies which I may end up using as the MyQ integration keeps breaking because of changes they make to the user agents on their side.

The Hook Up Rob, so I gathered some valor and worked on this project last night. The Shelly is as advertised, a great relay. Your instructions are “me” proof (stupid proof), the products you recommended in the description were great (and inexpensive), I was able to set it all up before connecting it to the garage door. Today I hooked it up to the garage door, pressed the button on the app, and VOILA!! The lights flickered, over, and over, after every button press in the app. The garage door didn’t even make an attempt to open or close. It’s official, the LiftMaster Security + 2.0 motors, with or without MyQ hub, absolutely don’t work with this relay...of course my integration was never going to be easy...LOL Now I need to figure out this whole “other button” and “soldering” thing...if anyone can push me the right way, I’ll do some research.

Brian Roy I figured I would try. Even if it’s not direct and needs the hub, it doesn’t work. My door opener says Security + 2.0. That’s a big no-no, but I tried anyway. Lights flickered, so I know that the relay did it’s thing...

I may have to do something like this next week. Have you considered combining this with the lock. Liftmaster 841LM is egregiously expensive, Meross are great but they do not communicate with OpenHab or HomeAssistant. Current, MyQ are not reliable, MyQ wireless door sensor is weak tho they added free integration with Google. I would rather have home automation controller and sonoff. Thinking that 4ch can handle both doors. Or add garage door locks. Great project. Thank you.

When you connect the Reed sensor can you make the app alert you when the door is open for a period of time?

This video just got some new exposure from a Home Assistant Facebook page. Important to reiterate a comment from a couple of years ago: certain garage door openers (Chamberlain MyQ is one) don't use simple contact closure. You can't just connect the two pins at the opener to cause it to open or close the door. You can get a MyQ remote and solder wires to its switch, or you can do the same with its wired control, but it won't work to just have the Shelly connect ("short") the pins on the opener.

Hey y'all. Loving this project. I am able to open the doors from the Shelly app as well as through the HA integration. My only issue right now is the sensor. For some reason it is not changing status consistently. Also, should the status change be immediate? I would think so. magnet is close enough to the sensor, I think😉! Thoughts?

The Shelly is working fine, however whenever I trigger the Shelly, my wall mounted garage door opener button goes out/resets and comes back on a few seconds later. My LiftMaster wall mounted garage door opener button has a small display which shows the time and temperature. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi, Perhaps a silly question but my garage door opener can supply 24V DC and I wonder if I can use these connectors instead of separate 12V power supply? Of course with jumper set to 24-60V DC position. Thanks for any advice in this regard.

Great video as always. The only wrinkle I see is that many new garage door opener’s such as those from Chamberlain that have digital codes cannot be controlled in this manner. I found that I had to open up the wall switch and solder two small wires across the contacts of the button so that a contact closure could trigger the digital signal to the garage door. This way what you presented still works but it just makes it somewhat more difficult because of disassembly and soldering inside the physical wall switch. If I am missing something please let me know but this is what I found I had to do. a contact closure at the motorhead would not control the door when using certain chamberlain openers.

I was going to comment for this exact reason. Most new openers just provide power to the wall controller and its RF back to the opener to allow security. Garadget makes a device called the Security+ 2.0 Dry Contact Adapter which makes it easy for DIY'rs that are not comfortable opening up their wall controller.

@@TheHookUp chamberlain is pushing their MyQ line which is very powerful but adds at least $100 to the cost of automating your door. As I said, I was able to do minor surgery to bypass the problem but many are reluctant to do so.

So funny enough, I bought the myQ system way back when I started smarthoming and it consistently lets me down. Something about the RF transmitter just never worked right, I don't know why they didn't give you relay contacts. Looking at this as a replacement.

ive seen wifi garage door opens that show the state of the garage door for around $15 on ebay and aliexpress. they have a magnetic sensor and use ewelink or tuya smartlife. duno if they are tasmota compatible.

I mistakenly bought 20 AWG stranded copper wire to do this project -- ugh. It's a bit thin and the stranded stuff made it harder to use. It didn't work on try one but after redoing my connections and AND making sure the wires weren't stripped and connected in a way that could possibly lead to them touching each other, it worked.

Can the information about the state of the switch be passed to Alexa?

Anyway to get a notification when the door status changes within the app?

Could you create a video on how to do this but for consumer electronics such as an air purifier or a cheap fan or coffee maker? I would love to know how to make a dumb object smart.

OK now the serious questions. What about the garage door opener light? I know that it comes on/off as the door opens/closes and there is a switch on the garage door wall button. I would like to also control that through the hub. So that I can use a motion sensor in the garage to turn on when someone walks in without opening the garage. My current garage door button has a motion sensor for this, but it'd crappy and doesn't always register the motion. If I use a Shelly1 should I connect it to the wall mounted switch or the opener? Thx

Amazing video!!! Installation super easy. However, I encountered an issue that I haven't been able to figured out. I set up the notifications when the door opens but the notifications only works if I'm using the shelly app. I'm trying to make it work without the shelly app. For me to receive notifications, I have to click the on/off switch in the shelly app but if I press the garage door opener button, I won't receive any notifications. Can someone point me in the right direction or have any pointers? TIA

If you have a newer Chamberlain or Liftmaster garage door opener with a yellow learn button, You cannot jumper the screw terminals on the back of the opener to open/close the door. These openers use the Security+ 2.0 protocol. The easiest way around it, is to buy a second wall switch, like the 883LMW and use the shelly relay to jumper the pushbutton on the wall switch.

You can make this work with Chamberlain/LiftMaster by adding an interface module that takes the relay output from the Shelly and converts it to the digital data that the opener expects to see on the wires that run to the wall switch. www.creativeaccesssolutions.com/Universal-Security-20%E2%84%A2-Interface-Module_p_13.html

Hi Robert, I have just installed Shelly 1 on my garage opener in the way you did but without read switch since I was planning to use Shelly Door/Window 2 to monitor gate state and use it in some HA automation (e.g. send notification if garage is open after certain hour). Anyway, Shelly seems to work fine but I'm a bit confused with one specific setting under 'BUTTON TYPE'. In your video at 6:07 it shows button type 'Toggle switch' but I wonder why not to use 'Momentary' instead, which should simulate garage push-button - what am I missing here? :)

Thanks for the video which, as always, is very well explained. To use this with Home Assistant and Siri, would you just use HA's Homekit integration to expose the Shelly to the Home App or would it be better to re-flash the Shelly with a Homekit firmware (forget what its called!)?

I have done the former (with other switches/ lights - not the garage door), and works well. Plus, keeps the firmware intact.

Thanks for the how to! Worked great. Do you know of a way to change the integration with Alexa to have the command as "Open/Close" instead of "On/Off"? Using the Shelly one, it identifies as a switch, and so in Alexa you need to say "Alexa, turn the garage door on"

How did you find the features like auto timer and toggle in the shelly app? The shelly app seems to work completely different on my phone than what's shown on the app.

just wondering, i use this setup in Home Assistant, but i want also to see on my dashboard in HA if the garage door is closed by the Reed sensor. Any idea how to make this visable in HA ? instead of watching the icon in the shelly app ?

I used a shelly Plus and end up with the following entities: - switch.overheaddoor (The shelley Relay contacts with the 1 second on delay) - binary_sensor.overheaddoor_input (Magnetic switch) feedback contact It all works, but I am struggling on how this could show up in home assistant as a cover with Icons representing a "Cover" and showing open and closed status?

Could we get some guidance on getting this system into Home Assistant? I'm not very familiar with MQTT and would appreciate the help. Great video though either way!

Great Video! There is one thing I think could be added just for some important info since I unfortunately discovered it. Newer Chamberlin/Liftmaster garage doors will not work with this because of proprietary signal inputs (Security 2.0+). Really sucks and this project will not work unless there is some remote button soldering involved.

This is a great point and I've experienced this 100% as well. Even ready made products like Nexx require an adapter which is basically a wireless opener you can learn to your garage door opener and then trigger from the Nexx relay.

Same issue. I tried to go down the Shelly route to get the Security 2.0+ door out of the cloud and manage it via MQTT locally over Home Assistant. Does work over the "MyQ" integration through Home Assistant.....just via Liftmaster's Cloud.

Love this idea for automating my garage door. I just order the items needed. One thing I am curious about. I assume adding this to my Alexa app is possible however I wonder how to make the reed switch status on Alexa? Can I ask Alexa to give me the status?

Hello! I liked the idea of automating the garage door! Would it be possible to automate a window rolling shutter? I already have an electrical one so would it be possible to change the switch to a ‘smart’ one?

I think you are looking for the Shelly 2.5. The wiring diagram that come with it includes the wiring for a shutter.

Hi Rob. Is it possible to use the Shelly 2.5 to operate 2 garage doors individually and provide the feedback? Would I need to use a 30v DC adapter or do you think I can run the 240v ac through the reed switch? Cheers, Bruce

Would it be possible to control the garage door light as well?

I have a roller door and there are separate circuits to open and close the door. Is there a DIY solution for this kind of door?

Rob, my garage opener is a liftmaster 8165. The contacts on the outside do not open the garage door. Do you have a work around for that or should I get a wifi accessory from liftmaster?

Can you please give the spec for the magnet as well?

My motor board only have numberst at wire entrys, and I read the manual and is not explicit which number open/close the door, how can I know?

Any Chance this could be tweeked for a Motorized Rolling Gate? And could the 12v p/s be supplied with a battery?

Yeah, that is such an annoying thing they did, and feels like a blatant money grab. There were no security exploits associated with the wired openers.

Got this worked, except my reed switch won't relay status to my shelly.

I’m having the same problem I set the timer to the time it takes to open the door and it showed but it doesn’t show if you use the regular garage button which is the main reason I started the project to see if the door is open after I left

Yup, doing this already and works really well with NodeRed/IFTT

I have the Shelly at 230v, so that it detects the open door that I put a normally open or closed magnet, does the magnet have to be 230v? Or does not it matter. thanks.

Hi, I am trying to set up my Shelly 1 to control my garage door. I've gone through the set up but just get "pending connection" on my iphone 8, Ive tried a second shell1 and when I get to the stage to allow to join the wifi it eventually comes up with pending connection! can you help please? Shelly has made a major update to their app. At 6:35 we see how to monitor the door position via the "Input state display". Unfortunately, with the new app update you can barely make out the indicator on the display icon. It's very hard to see. Would there be another way to tell if the door is open?

Hi I am having an issue. I have 4 terminals and not screw. I know the first red and white connect to my garage door opener. My setup when I connected it did not work. Then I noticed there was 24 volts written on the side. It's a craftsman garage door opener any idea why it won't work?

Have you considered updating this video with the Shelly Pro Dual Cover?

Mounting the reed switch this way means that somebody could break into your garage, open the door (just not fully) and you would never know the garage door has been opened. Mount wired part of the reed switch on the rail to detect fully closed position. All it takes is a few extra feet of doorbell wire.

Can I connect shelly 1pm with TV, so that my tv to be smart? Or any smart device that can make my tv smarter?
