I've never been good at making merch; this inspired me to stay up until 1 AM and try. official-rossmann-merch.creator-spring.com/listing/clouds-in-cars?product=1565 official-rossmann-merch.creator-spring.com/listing/clouds-in-cars?product=1637 In all seriousness, _"There is new hope that Ocean owners can score some wins here. American Lease, a company in New York that leases out cars to ride-hailing drivers, has agreed to buy Fisker's remaining inventory of some 3,000 Oceans for up to $46.25 million. As part of that deal, which a Delaware bankruptcy court judge still needs to approve, Fisker will let the company access proprietary source code and software that's necessary for maintaining and improving Oceans. To De Bardi, that signals that the FOA could gain similar levels of access. But it's also worrisome in the sense that another company can now gate-keep everything they need. Ideally, the FOA would work with American Lease, since they have shared goals here, he said."_ I think if you want bankruptcy protections, you release the source code of the product to customers. Or, your creditors can pierce the corporate veil & go for management personally. One or the other!

This tactic can be boiled down to "give me extra money for a service/device/functionality you already own, but we've locked behind a logic gate". It's effectively extortion. Car manufacturers aren't the only industry doing this. Gaming consoles have been doing this for over a decade. Paywalling online multiplayer as a feature for games that Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo don't even provide dedicated servers for. I pay for an Internet subscription, I own the content, I own the hardware, and most often these connections are either peer-to-peer, non-dedicated or hosted by a different developer. On the Switch: Diablo 3, Minecraft, Rocket League, Smash Brother's Ultimate, etc. Why the fuck do I have to pay Nintendo a subscription just to use my own Internet connection? What a load of bullshit. These companies rely on taking advantage of those who are technically illiterate or fiscally irresponsible enough to not ask the question of "Why?". It's sickening. Thank God (talented developers) for emulators. P.S. Thank God for Louis Rossmann too.

Get a PC to game on. Consoles have been like this for longer than you're listing here. Truth be told though, everything goes through the console manufacturer's servers, even it you would think it shouldn't. All gaming traffic is routed through their shit, which is why when XBox gaming goes down, you can't play Fortnite or the like. You're paying to access their servers (which you shouldn't even have to do).

Yes it's going to come to jail breaking, for ICE as much as EV. With these all in one consoles, if anything goes bad anywhere, the entire unit has to be replaced, and it costs $13,000. There's no more component level repair. But behind all those thousands of fragile electronic components, there's a very basic fan, compressor, and vent flap that all work and are just waiting for instructions. I believe the answer will be unplugging the OE shit and having a generic controller. Air conditioners aren't that complicated. The same could be done for transmission controls and fuel/spark controls, they're just a bit more complicated.

Eventually, people are going to buy their new cars and then take them to someone who goes through and hooks everything to normal buttons/switches. Then there's also going to be people who design the buttons and their cases to look better and to match different makes/models of cars better. Then, eventually the automakers will make this illegal for "safety reasons". Companies have been getting away with this sort of thing for a long time, connections to the cloud are just the newest way for them to make money from you {by harvesting your data}. I have a 2006 Gen2 Prius. The dashboard display has an under-powered capacitor on it which means that it is fairly common for the display to fail to boot up. Which means no speedometer, no gas gauge, no reverse camera, and the car might not want to turn off. Has Toyota upgraded the board? Nope. replacement boards still come with the same under-powered capacitor. Apparently, it is not worth the extra $1 it would cost to fix an issue that plagues thousands of customers.

You don't SEARCH for the fire extinguisher - it's bright red on an obvious place; you don't search for the emergency exit on a plane - it's clearly designated and you are debriefed about it; you don't search for the "break glass" hammer on busses - clearly designated. There are a lot of electronic devices or "software defined" ones, that spare a lot of mechanical or electrical complexity and/or are way tinier/cheaper/more reliable. And gradually, over the years, that has turned into "only $2000". And the same "It's *your* own fault if you fall for it!". And today, we somewhat regularly see people make off with 40k or more. And the same victim blaming response. I did amusing see a pro-crime art website lately start including a "Do you know this person?" warning header on its message service. After they proudly made it illegal to call out anyone that impersonates someone. So, seems something *very bad* happened to cause that.

Maybe that's because I never was one who went for the 'latest and flashiest' gadgets etc. But I have come to notice that now that a great many more posters are coming to reflect your views and understandably so. The first folks were guys mostly in the automotive sector - the technicians, garage owners etc. Planned obsolescence, apparently deliberate design features discouraging repairs even by regular techs etc., needless complexity and associated costs. I think now this is a major consumer issue. It's not always immediately obvious but our rights to repair and full ownership are actually part and parcel [and an intrinsic part at that] of our freedom to have and own private property. Thanks for keeping the torch lighted Mr. Rossman.

Tech is fragile, hard to maintain, and as you are pointing out, is now totally destroying our ability to use our own products. P.S. You call out Apple towards the end of the video, but it started earlier.
