Yes yes, if we don't know when and where it was signed, then we don't have that type of provenance as a backing of proof, but by no means does that mean nothing can be authenticated. How does one presume that an Abraham Lincoln autograph is authenticated? After all, none of us were there. There are experts and reputable organizations, for those who aren't aware of this, who specialize in verifying and authenticating. I've been an autograph collector since 1995 and yes, that's not as long as other people in the field, but I've seen quite a lot of stuff over even my years at conventions, conferences, book stores and other shops.

The problem with PSA'ing books is that: a) without some type of third-party proof that came with the book (LOA, photos at signing, etc.), a PSA ruling is merely one organization's opinion that the item is legitimate. b) It has the problem of causing eBay listings to skyrocket, as people somehow think that PSA'ing a book automatically adds $300-500 in value, at minimum, to the product. c) For big-ticket items like a signed Obama or Bush, you're looking at $75-200 (at least) per book. Multiply that by all the items this guy has in his collection, and you start to see that this method of verification becomes really unsustainable, really fast. d) A personal preference for me, but I don't want a third-party putting a sticker on every item I send in. I prefer books to be unmarked save for the signature. I say these things because I have the same problem (200+ signed books, want to figure out how to best appraise/value them).
